Czech Republic will be looking to bounce back from a defeat on Thursday as they host Faroe Islands in a Group E fixture in the European Championship qualifiers. Faroe Islands are the whipping boys of the group and the Czechs will be confident of easing to a comfortable win on Sunday.
Czech Republic were not at their best on Thursday as they suffered a 3-0 defeat to Albania in their previous qualifying fixture. They failed to make their superior possession count and ultimately lost control after Mojmir Chytil got sent off just before the break.
That result put the Czech Republic even further behind the Albanians as they are now five points off the pace with a game in hand. A win in Sunday’s clash will take Jan Silhavy’s men above Poland and into one of the automatic qualification places.
A small positive for Czech Republic is that it was their first defeat in the qualifiers having claimed two wins and as many draws from four previous matches. Among their results in that run was a 3-0 win in the reverse fixture with Faroe Islands while they also picked up a 3-1 home victory over Poland.
Faroe Islands are usually the whipping boys of most qualifying campaigns and they are once again living up to this billing this time around. They are bottom of Group E having failed to pick up a single win from six matches.
Since beginning their campaign with a 1-1 draw in Moldova, it has been all downhill for Faroe Islands in these qualifiers. They lost all of their last five matches and travel to the Czech Republic off the back of a 2-0 defeat to Poland in their previous fixture.
Faroe Islands had no attempts on target against Poland and that has been one of the major problems of their campaign. Hakan Ericson’s men often struggle to produce much going forward and have failed to score in four of their last five matches.
How the bookies view it
The bookies have installed Czech Republic as overwhelming favourites with a home win priced at 1/11 by Coral. An unlikely victory for Faroe Islands is valued at 35/1 by Paddy Power while a draw is set at odds of 10/1 by bet365.
Head to head
Czech Republic have won all six previous meetings with Faroe Islands and are yet to concede a goal in this fixture. They picked up 3-0 victory in the reverse fixture back in June with Vaclav Cerny netting a brace.
Players to watch
Vaclav Cerny carries a major goal threat from midfield and has found three times in these qualifiers including a brace in the reverse fixture with Faroe Islands. He could be worth keeping an eye on for Czech Republic and is priced at 6/5 by bet365 to get on the score sheet on Sunday.
Given Faroe Islands’ attacking problems, Czech Republic will be targeting a shutout at the other end of the pitch. The likes of Vladimir Coufal and Tomas Holes will be the ones to watch at the back and can lead the Czechs to a win to nil at 1/2 with BetVictor.
Anything else catch the eye?
Czech Republic are expected to be comfortable on Sunday and having earned a 3-0 victory in the reverse fixture, a -2 handicap could be considered at 10/11 with Paddy Power. The hosts could also be tipped to win both halves at 5/6 bet365.
The Czechs were already 2-0 up at the break in the reverse fixture and could be backed in the -1 first half handicap at 6/4 with bet365.
