13 Premier League clubs enter the EFL Cup at the second round stage of the competition tonight. The draw is split in to Northern and Southern sections and as luck would have it just two top flight teams (Leeds Utd & Wolves) play at home tonight, which means there might be some giant-killing opportunities for lower league clubs.
Scott Brown pulled off an upset when his Fleetwood side knocked Championship side Wigan out in the last round but he could really announce his arrival on the managerial scene if the League One side can dispose of Everton this evening.
The Toffees have made an inauspicious start to the season so far. An 88th minute goal by Demarai Gray salvaged a late point on Saturday, their first in three games.
The clubs met in this competition two seasons ago when Everton won 5-2 at an empty Highbury Stadium due to Covid restrictions. Like in most games tonight any bets will hinge on team news ahead of the game and no doubt Frank Lampard will take the opportunity to give some fringe players a run out.
The underdogs are 11/2 to get the win. That might be a big ask but they could nick a goal at 4/6.

They look well priced against a team the league below them who were soundly beaten by Ipswich at the weekend and sit 18th in League One. 19/20 for a side who were in the Premier League a matter of months ago against strugglers in the thired tier looks like a very good price.

In the Champions League, two of tonight's ties are finely poised. Viktoria Plzen and Qarabag played out a 0-0 draw last week and it could be a close one again tonight. The Czech side have started the season unbeaten (W5 D3) and will be well rested after a weekend off. Qarabag too had a free weekend but will of course have to contend with a 3,500km trip as well as an effective 11pm kick-off based on Baku-time. That might swing things the home side's way at 21/20.
Red Star Belgrade will be confident of getting the job done against Maccabi Haifa in Serbia tonight. They led 2-1 at half-time before going down 3-2 and are 3/4 to get the win they need to progress.
Benfica look in a comfortable position, 2-0 up from the first leg against Dynamo Kiev in Poland. They were two up at the break last week and a repeat half-time/full-time win pays 10/11.

As far as I’m aware only one bookie has paid out on the shot after seeing the footage and that’s William Hill.
Opta drop a few of these every season. If you’ve lost out then make a complaint, get a final resolution and take through to IBAS. The bookies paid out last year, (after IBAS involvement), on a Zaha shot that was incorrectly classified as a cross.

I think it’s just the way they were drawn in the tie they are listed first though, as for instance tonight the Dumbarton fans are sitting in the home supporters section ( although with it all being the same stand I don’t think it will make any difference anyway 😂 ) ! Nice and scenic but an awful place to play or watch when the winds howling in off the water 😬
