After delivering winning selections in each of his last two featured columns, SlipsTips shares a play from Wednesday's relegation six-pointer in Ligue 1 between Bordeaux and Saint-Étienne.
Bordeaux vs Saint-Étienne (Wednesday, 18:00)
Two teams battling for their lives towards the bottom of Ligue 1 meet at the Matmut Atlantique on Wednesday evening, as Bordeaux entertain Saint-Étienne.
David Guion’s strugglers gave their fans something to cheer about after they defeated relegation rivals Metz less than a fortnight ago, but they came crashing back down to earth with a 6-1 loss at Lyon on Sunday, a setback which has left them four points adrift of guaranteed safety.
Saint-Étienne, meanwhile, have earned 18 points from their last 11 league fixtures, the most recent of which was a battling 2-1 win over Brest which could prove to be a massive boost to their survival chances.
Considering the contrasting form of these sides, I'm more than happy to side with Saint-Étienne with a +0.25 on the Asian Handicap at 43/50 with Bet 365.
This selection sees us land a half-win should the game end all-square, while an away success would net us a nice odds-against winner.
As already alluded to, Pascal Dupraz’s side have hauled themselves away from the drop zone since late January, having lost just three of their last 11 league games, two of which were against French heavyweights PSG and Marseille.
What's more, the Greens have scored at least one goal in all but one of those matches from that 11-game sample, hitting multiple strikes on no fewer than six occasions.
That doesn’t bode well for a brittle Bordeaux backline that shipped six goals at Lyon last time out, not to mention the hosts have triumphed in just one of their last 10 French top-flight tussles.
It’s also pointing out that Les Girondins have earned the unenviable tag as the leakiest defence in Ligue 1, with David Guion’s confidence-stricken side posting a mere one clean sheet across their opening 32 matches of the campaign.
With all that in mind, as well as the fact that this play has proven to be a profitable selection in eight of Saint-Étienne’s last 11 league games, getting the visitors onside with a +0-25 start at 43/50 (Bet 365) in this relegation six-pointer is a price that definitely represents value.
