Grimsby Town v Newport County
BSBP Play-Off Semi-Final 1st leg, 7.45pm
GRISMBY secured a nice win on the final day of the regular league season by beating a weakened Newport side 3-0. Although it will be a very different away side that turns up here I think the result will be the same but maybe not the margin.
The market for the match is hard to explain. Essentially we were getting a far bigger price on Saturday for Grimsby to beat a Newport reserve team than we are getting for them to beat a Newport side back to full strength.
With that in mind, stakes should be reduced accordingly, but there is still plenty of evidence to suggest Grimsby can gain the upper hand from this first leg at their Blundell Park home.
The Mariners have by far the best defensive record from the regular season, conceding an average of just 0.83 goals per game. Thirteen of Grimsby's 23 wins in the league this season were registered without their opponents scoring a goal.
Striker Liam Hearn has been welcomed back into the team after managing just five appearances due to an Achilles tendon injury, he got back on the scoresheet on Saturday and that's a warning to the rest of the teams in these play-offs.
Newport blazed a trail at the start of the season when their main striker Aaron O'Connor was firing on all cylinders. His own injury woes have curtailed his form and his return of just four goals in his last 21 appearances will be giving manager Justin Edinburgh a headache.
I'll be backing Grimsby to strike a killer blow here and then rely on their defensive form to complete the job in South Wales.

Milesey, what’s your thoughts about the £17k loser? Am I being too harsh on him or am I right to ask why he would have wanted the selection voided in the first place.
So……. the first game on his selection, was a 1:30 k/o and he placed it late, but it was accepted and that game he lost on, but all the others he won, but he is arguing that game should have been void ?

Milesey, placed it three seconds after 1.30pm so in my experience that’s always accepted. However, he says when placing the bet he realised it was after 1.30pm and asked for it to be voided. Staff member said machine would void but it didn’t and he can’t have checked his slip. IBAS have ruled in William Hill’s favour and as I said my question is: Why ask it be voided if it’s being accepted? Also, three seconds is nothing. How did he know it was three seconds over when he stood at the till? Time of bet taken is 1:30.03 so he must have been at the desk at least a few seconds before that.
right, but the game at 1:30 he had lost ? but it was accepted 3 seconds after k/o, he wanted it void, but the game lost, and he picked up 12 winners and this was the only one to lose, but he says he asked for it to be voided and was told the machine would do it ?

Milesey, yeah it was his only loser. He says he was told machine would void if put on late but it didn’t. As I say three seconds late should be allowed to stand on a football bet and usually does.
The game most probably hadn’t even kicked off at that time……….. i don’t do football coupons in shops anymore for it’s easier online, but i am sure many years ago i got a coupon through at 3:15 on a saturday afternoon, the odds had changed for alot of the games to reflect the scores at that time but it went through…… and in the days where everything was all written down, i could get horse racing / dog bets through halfway through the races.

Milesey, if the game’s live on TV they’ll take it anytime and give you the inrunning odds but for a bet to be voided in three seconds would be strange. No chance of a goal and even if there was one a few seconds later no one would hear about for at least another 30 seconds or so. If staff gave him bum advice I can see why he’s raging but really the bet should have stood.
