MY selection Jordan Spieth (16-1) put me through the wringer for 13 holes on Sunday on the final day of The Open.
I shouldn’t have worried though because his birdie, eagle, birdie, birdie, par finish was awesome to watch. To come back from one down and shoot that sort of golf was nothing but sheer genius. I have never been a big Spieth fan but I am now.
This week the European Tour moves to the Green Eagle Golf Course, Hamburg for the Porsche European Open. The 7,582 yard par 72 Nord Course, is one of the longest courses on Tour and hosts this tournament for the first time. Water comes into play on numerous holes and some spectacular bunkers. Length and accuracy could be important this week.
Defending champion Alexander Levy hasn’t been setting the heather alight since he won in China at the end of April but having said that his game hasn’t been too bad although not showing in results.
He isn’t the longest off the tee, averaging 292 yards, but is accurate and his all-round game will suit here. Missing the cut at The Open might be a blessing with an extra couple of days preparation.
Germany has been a bit of a happy hunting ground for the Frenchman, with a 3rd and 12th finish at the BMW International Open as well as his win at the Porsche last year. Wouldn’t be surprised if he won this weekend. Driving Distance: 292 yards (147th) Driving Accuracy: 60.4% (96th)
Aberdonian Richie Ramsay’s showing at Royal Birkdale last weekend plus his T2 at the Irish Open two weeks previously have persuaded me to pick him this week. He has had an up and down season but has shown some return to form over the past three tournaments.
Hasn’t won on the European Tour since 2015 but he has triumphed three times and it would be great to see him at the top of the leaderboard. He works hard at his game and although he doesn’t hit a long ball he is accurate and has the game for here. Driving Distance: 287 yards (206th) Driving Accuracy: 64.9% (50th)
