ANDY MURRAY dropped a set to Nick Kyrgios for the first time but is safely through to the US Open second round.

Two of Murray's fellow Brits bit the dust as Laura Robson and James Ward were sent packing while Aljaz Bedene progressed after his opponent, Ernests Gulbis, retired injured.

Today the second round gets under way with top seed Novak Djokovic topping the bill and title holder Marin Cilic also in action while the Williams sisters look for stress-free progress in the women's singles.

My overs treble was let down on the final leg by Ryan Harrison bowing out with a whimper as he failed to take a set off fellow American Rajeev Ram. I'm hoping for better from the likes of Mardy Fish and Fabio Fognini today.

Elsewhere there's stage 11 of cycling's Tour of Spain and Major League Baseball among the sporting highlights so let's hear your tips and thoughts and good luck with your bets.

Scott's tennis treble

Fognini v Cuevas over 3.5 sets
Fish v Lopez over 3.5 sets
Bautista Agut v Carreno-Busta over 3.5 sets
(3-1, Coral)

    Thoughts on a treble?

Mulac – Harrison losing cost me £1k. I had a 9/10 and 11 fold, total stake was £10 and would have won £1100. It was the last leg, was asleep so couldn’t cover. Had to make do with £100 as 9 and 10 folds were winners.

Watched the Blue Jays game and they completely changed their style of play last night. Don’t think I’ve ever seen them play like that.

@iddy dang, was looking at harrison to win as well, let’s hope the first round shocks are done and dusted, im looking at over 3.5 set bet’s today, as low odds and tricky picks..

    few that spring out:

    fognini v quevas
    fish v lopez
    chardy v klizan

    shade under 3/1

    thoughts appreciated @tennis heads.

Harrison is plain awful. How he was favourite in that match I don’t know

Retirements are the bane of my life, had 200 quid on Monfils to lose at 7/1. He was 2-1 down, getting battered and decides to call it a day, bet void. Why I hate betting on tennis

Any thoughts on the doubles today? Bury/istomin sticks out @ 1/2

  9. mlac 9 years ago

^ha, my bookie has anything over 1 set retirement as a loss.

of course dolpogonov decided to retire in the 3rd :(

im taking advantage of corals 5 acca insurance (if 1 loses, stake refunded)

chardy v klizan over 3.5 sets
Fognini v cuevas over 3.5 sets
    Robredo
    isner
Karlovic v veseley over 3.5 sets

I’m taking this now as I can’t see what chance the 49ers have against the Vikings in their opener. They have lost the bulk of their team and are under a new head coach. Their total wins opened up at 10.5 in January and have slipped down to just 6.5 in places and even still they are being taken under. It’s safe to say it’s going to be a rebuilding process and the only possible highlight they can look forward to is having a low pick in the 2016 draft. Vikings opened up at +3.5 underdogs and are now out to -2.5 favourites, with all of the losses the niners have taken over the off season, I can’t see anything positive for them over a team that are set to be a dark horse for a playoff run. If that’s the case, Minnesota should be winning games like this and I’ll take a field goal lead on the handicap.

    NFL – Tuesday 15th September – 3:20AM

    Minnesota Vikings -2.5 @ 24/25 @ Marathon – 5 points

alex- if you back against someone like monfils as a heavy favourite you should use a bookie who pays out after a completed set. if you place a large bet on a fave i would always recommend a bookie who voids, as there’s nothing worse than getting burned that way. but otherwise take the bookie who pays out. Betf air are my personal fave for most things.

  16. Ad 9 years ago

for anyone after an around evens ‘safe’ bet on the tennis, this is the best i can come up with today. (note how there isn’t a womens game in sight!)

    Goffin
    Bautista Agut
    Ferrer
    Paire

    pays 2.1

nb never go too big on a bet with paire in!

  17. Ad 9 years ago

    bryan/bryan d querrey/johnson may well be a better alternative.

  18. Jordan 9 years ago

Also just to re post the bet I posted months ago was the Green Bay Packers -4 @ 10/11 @ Bwin – 10 points (Out to -6.5 in places)

Obviously the loss of Jordy Nelson is a big one but his loss is a chance for last years rookie Davante Adams to make a big name for himself as he started doing in the post season against the Cowboys. Randall Cobb also has a minor injury but says he’s ok for week 1. The Packers do have depth in their receiver core with Janis, White and draftee Ty Montgomery all being fairly productive in pre season. Tight End Richard Rodgers could also have a breakout season and has been said that he may have the best hands in the team. Quoted by Aaron Rodgers himself. I wouldn’t go lumping any money on this with the spread as it is now as there is one pre season game to be played so injuries could come a cropper. Starters will see little to no game time at all as week 4 is mostly to see who has the ability to make the 53 man rosters which is why I’ve confidently taken the Vikings, but Green Bay will probably have to play the likes of Montgomery, Janis and White with Adams likely to be protected for week 1.

  19. Ad 9 years ago

and sticking with doubles, vasselin/ nestor look good at 3/10. They have been imperious since joining forces, and play a pair yet to team up on a hardcourt. looks nailed on and a good accumulator leg.

  20. Juan 9 years ago

Jordan – can you remind me what your antepost bets have been so far? Conference/Division Winners etc

  21. Humble tipper 9 years ago

AD whats your opinion on this acca
    Goffin 1/6
    Robredo 3/10
    Pavlychenkova 1/3
    Hercog win a set 1/3
    Svitolina 1/4
    Makarova 1/5
    Bencic 2-0 4/11
    Nestor/vasselin 2/7

    • Ad 9 years ago

humble – all look like decent enough picks but i’d expect at least one of them to fail. enough doubts over a few of the players involved. pavlyuchenkova is impossible to predict, bouchard could suddenly hit gear and svitolina isn’t unbeatable if Kanepi really turns it on like she can.

one bet i’ve just seen that looks great for an acca is pennetta to beat niculescu @ 5/11. they play tomorrow. Pennetta has done brilliantly here in recent years, and has smashed niculescu to the loss of about total 4 games over their only two meetings.

Good man Jordan, will have a few shillings on that, any thoughts on the outright winners does anyone catch your eye at a decent price?

  32. Ad 9 years ago

seem to be a fair few people putting their faith in Pavlyuchenkova. I will be steering clear myself! tempted to put a few bob against her, but this may just be the lingering remains of having been burned by her the last time i backed her, where she put in a truly woeful performance.

talking of tempted, Fish @ 3/1 to beat Lopez and take another step towards the hollywood ending to his career is calling to me. But i’m pretty sure it’s the voice of wishful thinking rather than the voice of reason. Still……

  33. Jordan 9 years ago

There’s a few to be fair mate. I did suggest the Packers very early in the year but only put a tenner on them @ 7/1. It’s difficult to say at this point without a game yet to be played. I know the chief usually puts up two or three teams as the odds are good for even the favourites. If I had to suggest three I’d say the Seahawks, Packers and Colts. Those are the three favourites which makes sense in my eyes, but right now nothing solid.

    Two posted yesterday won

    Allertova D. – Vinci R.

Roberta Vinci (43) has been in fine form and plays Denisa Allertova (73) who’s been playing ITF tournaments until June this year before going on WTA tournaments and won her 1st rd over Suarez Navarro 6-1 , 7-6 who was seeded (10) so a big scalp for her and a +4.5 games start looks a good bet

    Laura Robson +3.5 (Games Won) @ 4/5 Bet365 – WON

Laura Robson (618) has been plagued with injury since getting down to (44)in 2013 , she only 7 matches this year so may be a bit off chance picking her,

Elena Vesnina (108)will be a tough test but if fit she should win so worth take Hcp +3.5 on Robson

John Isner -5.5 (Games Won) evens Bet365 – WON

John Isner (13) has had time to prepare as he was knocked out in 1st round of last tournaments in Cincinnati by Querrey (38) but should have a easier match tonight against Malek Jaziri (81) who made the semi final in Winston-Salem losing to Kevin Anderson who won the tournament

Has Nadal any chance of winning this? 28/1 is huge.

I’ve no been watching the US Open so no sure what shape he’s in

    • Ad 9 years ago

In short, no! He was 50/1 at the weekend. And I would give him less chance than that.

    • Mr Fixit 9 years ago

Mr Samsung, he’s that price for a reason. Has no chance in my book.

  39. Felix 9 years ago

It’s fairly unlikely Nadal will win.

  40. Ad 9 years ago

Nadal will probably win his next three matches , as he has a pretty easy draw till the quarters. But, barring injury or a miracle, he will lose to Djokovic.

  41. Ad 9 years ago

And why didn’t I tip fish!? Toyed with him, and Kontaveit enough to back them, but missed a golden opportunity to look clever on here!

    • Scott Allot 9 years ago

The Bencic match is bonkers. One close line call went against her and she crumbled into a crying wreck before losing the plot completely. Looks home and hosed now though after making you sweat for your dosh!
