JOHNB bagged a 5-1 winning nap on Friday and finished the day with a 1pt profit.

He is now 5.96pts up for September and has one tip for Saturday, saying: “Storm The Stars doesn’t take a lot of picking but he is quite simply the bet of the day.

“On formats he hasn’t put a hoof wrong in what has been a busy season for him. His trainer doesn’t usually run a horse as often in a season but Storm The Stars seems to relish it.”

Storm The Stars (5 out of 5 stars), 1m 6f 132y: All-the-way winner of listed event at Goodwood before placed in 3 Group 1s, including Derby/Irish Derby. Battled gamely to repel challenge of Bondi Beach in Great Voltigeur at York since. Big player.
Race commentary: The Great Voltigeur looks the key trial, and with STORM THE STARS winning that race in the style of one who will relish the extra distance, he’s taken to confirm placings with Bondi Beach. The latter’s stablemate Fields of Athenry has each-way appeal.

Clarky, no I’m not “misleading the punters”. It was 5pts staked today and 6 returned so that’s a 1pt profit. Think you’re forgetting the 5-1 pick returns 6pts including stake. Thanks for your concern though.

Johnb, I’m very interested to know why you have deserted Golden Horn? Is there good reason you have not tipped him this time or has your high opinion of him changed since his defeat?

  4. Postman 1 year ago

I think the weather in Ireland will play a big part in the racing, not staying up half the night to find that my selections have become non runners.

I hope the weather conditions hold out for FREE EAGLE (NAP)

This has been the horses target all season and I can’t believe it is 4/1.

Golden Horn… I think that there’s just not enough value in his odds. His last two SPs were 4/9. There’s simply no value in that price, no matter which horse you bet on.

If his odds were 33/1 once again… that would be something :)

For anyone thinking of backing Limato, plenty of rain forecast overnight and if it’s too soft the horse probably won’t run.

I will be on Storm The Starts tomorrow. A lot of noise for Free Eagle Weld/Smullen. Unbelievable when you consider Golden Horn and Gleneagles are in the same race, question being what will the going be with rain forecast to fall. It doesn’t feel right via the form lines given that Free Eagle just about held off The Great Gatsby and we all now what the Horn did. I doubt Gleneagles will run, question will be whether the Horn is risked again. Weld has a habit of getting horses right, not only does Free Eagle need to be right there needs to be improvement. Anyone with any info please help?!

Posted this on the other thread, just re-watched the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes. Won by a very narrow margin and because The Great Gatsby could not get a clear run. How much will Free Eagle improve, don’t know personally but I will be having a go on the Horn again. I had an identical treble to Jimron in my oddschecker when I saw him type the same bet (well almost) except no Limato. Treble pays 20.25/1 William Hill

I wouldnt be backing anything at leopardstown until at least mid-day with heavy rain there today and more rain due in the morning. There will be a number of non runners which is a great pity and Gleneagles will definately not run as O Brien has stated if the ground became gd/sft he wouldnt run.

Golden Horn is a great bet at 2/1 but with the rain and so many non runners feel may have a small stake as a interest if it stays above evens.

    Timeform comments:

Scent Of Summer (5 out of 5 stars), 5f 11y: Perfect return when landing a 5f Thirsk maiden in July. Not seen to best effect either start in handicaps since, and she undoubtedly remains with a bigger performance in her locker.
Race commentary: Thirsk maiden winner SCENT OF SUMMER hasn’t been seen to best effect either start in handicaps, and it would come as a surprise if she didn’t have a bigger performance in her. She gets the nod, with Excellent George and Kinematic 2 others to consider.

Bocca Baciata (4 out of 5 stars), 1m 2f: Smart filly. 11/4, career best when winning 9-runner Dance Design Stakes at this course (9f, good to soft) 14 days ago by 4 lengths from Easter, forging clear. On the upgrade recently.
Race commentary: Last year’s Yorkshire Oaks heroine TAPESTRY hasn’t been seen since finishing midfield in the Arc 11 months ago, but she may well be worth chancing on seasonal return with her sights lowered to Group 2 level. Bocca Baciata is going the right way and is feared, as is Ribbons and Carla Bianca.

Blue Bayou (4 out of 5 stars), 7f: Promising sort. Won 7-runner Sweet Solera Stakes (7/4) at Newmarket (7f, good to firm) 36 days ago by ½ length from Fireglow, overcoming positional bias. Looks competitive on form.
Race commentary: BALLYDOYLE had plenty in hand when winning a Group 2 over C&D 3 weeks ago and makes plenty of appeal. Tanaza and Blue Bayou are also exciting prospects so are feared most.
