Johnb says: “I have already advised Churchill for next year’s 2000 Guineas & Derby – he has been really impressive this season and my view is he will get even better next year.

“Blue Point on the other hand is harder to call for how he will progress next year. If he trains on then in my view it’s a straight fight between Blue Point & Churchill but in the Derby Churchill is the only horse for me – he gives me the same excitement as Golden Horn did.

“But to answer my question earlier the most impressive horse I have seen this year is BLUE POINT with Churchill and Annie Power a close second and third.”

    Apples jade 2-55 Newcastle nap.
Got 4-1 earlier this week and just had a bit more at 5-2.
Sceaux royal is the obvious danger as he has improved last 2 runs and there is a line of form through rashaan which gives 20-1 shot veteran hidden cyclone a squeak.
Irving won this 2 years ago but was well beaten last year.
    1 apples jade
    2 sceaux royal
    3 hidden cyclone

Apples Jade looks a great bet tomorrow, considering wasn’t fit last time out. Sceaux royal is improving, but I was at wincanton when won last and I honestly think the field wasn’t that great. Apart from Zubayr who fell at the last, so maybe the result was a tad flattering.

    John b
You recently talked up Bristol de mai as a possible gold cup ew shout.
He goes in the last at Newcastle tomorrow priced 4-1.
He won a poorish grade 1 in February and lost at short odds last 2 runs.
This looks an average handicap, last year’s winner wakanda goes again at a similar price as does the runner up virak, a horse who can’t seem to win races and also lost to wakanda at Ascot last December.
Definitely red is favourite, but doesn’t seem to have beat much recently, he did finish ahead of tomorrows Hennessey favourite native river a while back but had 7 pounds in hand that time.

Surely if Bristol is a possible gold cup horse he should win this ?.
Just wondered if he was on your shortlist for today’s tips ?.

    • Profile photo of Johnb
      Johnb 2 weeks ago

Yeah Bristol De Mai was one of my shortlist horses for Saturday but he is still nowhere near 100% fit and we won’t see him anywhere near his best for another couple of months yet,
He should be helped by the extra distance on Saturday but he still wants further,
Last time out can easily be forgiven as it was a tactical two horse race over a distance that was too short,
Bristol De Mai is a serious contender for the Gold Cup along with Killtulagh Vic but Thistlecrack is the main one,

Two horses that aren’t going to run in the Gold Cup but could quite easily win it are Annie Power and Faugheen and I am stunned that neither of the two will run considering Mullins has never won the race

      • Profile photo of theamazingfrankel
        theamazingfrankel 2 weeks ago

Because Mullins doesn’t own the horses, and it’s down to Rich Ricci at the end of the day. Mullins advises, he will decide what he wants overall. That’s probably why. But would’ve been interesting to see one of them going chasing.

        • Profile photo of Johnb
          Johnb 2 weeks ago

It’s Susannah Ricci that gets the final say, Rich Ricci has said he wants to go chasing with Annie Power

          • Profile photo of theamazingfrankel
            theamazingfrankel 2 weeks ago

Then maybe he should have a word ha. But I’d rather Annie sticks with hurdles myself.

johnb theres no way willie mullins or any one else would run faugheen in the gold cup hes all about speed ,and as i said a few weeks ago on this thread i was told by one of willies drivers annie power will be running in the champion hurdle again

            • Profile photo of Johnb
              Johnb 2 weeks ago

theplug actually there are quite a few people who are well respected in racing have the same opinion as me about Faugheen being a natural Gold Cup horse and if he had been trained by anyone else he would have been a chaser, guaranteed

      • Profile photo of deeman
        deeman 2 weeks ago

John I have on good authority that Killtulagh Vic will not race in the gold cup this year

      • Profile photo of jcb
        jcb 2 weeks ago

        Hi JohnB,

I realise you think both Faugheen and Annie power would win the gold cup, does that mean you think both would win this years World Hurdle easily? Looks to be Faugheen who may be going for that as things stand.

Also regarding Kilultagh Vic, it was said that he has an injury, and would only be back towards the very end of the season, if at all, so a gold cup run looks seriously unlikely.

        • Profile photo of Johnb
          Johnb 2 weeks ago

Annie Power and Faugheen are both bred to be chasers especially Faugheen who is bred to be a Gold Cup horse, I have always said I would have kept Vautour hurdling and gone chasing with Faugheen
Both Annie and Faugheen could win the World hurdle this season as it looks a lot easier than last season,
Not sure what the injury is like for Killtulagh Vic but he is also a horse that could go back hurdling in the World hurdle as I think Thistlecrack will win as I have said for over a year now

Plenty of winners on the thread again yesterday too many to mention but the plug with 3/4 tops the charts but well done to everyone.

NAP WITHOUT LIMITES 9/4 1.35 gowran
This horse won a listed bumper on heavy going by no less than 49L and could be a real star so hoping he can get his hurdle career off to a good start.

NB MOTCOMB STREET 11/4 3.40 donny
The “SHARK” once again sends one across the pond and i cant see him doing so without good reason

And i just cant resist a small ew on HIDDEN CYCLONE in the fighting 5th whose in cracking form and looks a huge price to me. APPLES JADE will be better for first run and will be much happier on the softer surface and rates the one to beat but a 2nd place finish will be fine with me

    Best of luck to all

    Evening all,

Friday was a good day over all for me with Lough Derg Leader landing one of my 15 point bets at 5/2, but unfortunately captain midnight disappointed only managing a close 5th. As for my small bets I only landed place money on testa rossa. Nevertheless I ended the day with a smart profit to take me back over the 50point profit mark for the month. I have picked out a few selections for Saturday with 1 being an increased stake bet again.

    1.30 Newbury – Antony 7/1 EW

Antony produced a career best last time at Ascot in the grade 3 sodexo gold cup. He slammed his useful opposition by over 4 lengths, he jumped well thought the race and cleared away up the run in. He has gone up 8lbs for that win but if you look at the opposition he beat at Ascot that day I see no reason why he can’t follow up today. This race looks slightly weaker and the drop back in trip shouldn’t be an issue. He remains relatively unexposed over fences and is certainly on the improve, around the 7/1 mark this evening I will be having a small bet on him each way.

    2.45 Gowran Park – Zabana 15/8 NAP

Zabana has an outstanding chance in the 2.45 Gowran tomorrow. This talented horse has improved throughout his career, he was placed in a Grade 3 hurdle in 2014, a neck second in the coral cup at the festival in 2015 before winning the Champion Novice Chase at Punchestown last season. That day he beat the likes of outlander, henryville, Southfield royal and grand national hero rule the world. He returned to action at the start of this month at Down Royal but looked in desperate need of the run and he faded tamely in the closing stages. With that run under his belt he should dispatch of tomorrow opposition with relative ease. Connections have even touted a run at the gold cup this season if all goes to plan. I would be very disappointed if he doesn’t put up a bold showing, I will be increasing my stake for this bet – but as always nothing is assured.

3.10 Newbury – Vicente 18/1 EW / Un Temps Pour Tout 9/1 EW

I will be taking 2 each way bets against the field in the Hennessy tomorrow and will be taking advantage of the 6 places on offer skybet. My selections fit the bill of previous Hennessy winners and I am hopefully of big runs from both.

Un temps pour tout does have a lot of weight to carry tomorrow but the form of his cheltenham festival win looks rock solid and his attitude and jumping that day was impressive. His win last time out will have no doubt served as a pipe opener for today and he should be in top condition for tomorrow. He can continue his upward curve on route to the top level tomorrow afternoon.

Vicente is closely tied to Un temps pour tout on the form of his novice win at cheltenham in November last year. He beat Un temps that day by 2 lengths giving him 8lbs. He then went on to run respectably in the national hunt chase over 4m at the festival and then he won the Scottish national. His mark has gone up 5 lbs for tomorrow meaning he will be running of 151 but that mark still looks workable and if they make good use of him tomorrow I don’t see the step back in trip being much of an issue. At around 18/1 he looks good value each way.

    Thanks and GL to all

Well going to start posting my picks after a long time of regularly checking the forum:

    2.55 Newcastle – Petit Mouchoir 7/2
Cooper deserts Apples Jade, last seasons juvenile form doesn’t look that strong at the minute. Apples Jade likely to need a trip, which points me to Petit.

12.20 Newbury – La Bague Au Roi 6/4
Think this could be a horse to follow this year. Won easily the last two times beating a couple of alright horses, who knows what else it’s got.

Thistlecrack far too sharp for Newbury rivals

Cheltenham Gold Cup favourite Thistlecrack continued his education over fences with victory in the Grade Two bet365 Novices’ Chase at Newbury.

The Colin Tizzard-trained World Hurdle hero was having his third outing over larger obstacles, following wins at Chepstow and Cheltenham, and was sent straight to the head of affairs by Tom Scudamore.

Festival winner Ibis Du Rheu attempted to get upsides from time to time, but the 1-8 favourite never had to engage top gear at any stage, producing a virtually faultless round of jumping.

Bigbadjohn denied Ibis Du Rheu the runner-up spot, some eight lengths behind the impressive winner.

Scudamore said: “It was a great thrill.

“He’s really learned from that and he keeps on learning.

“Even at this early stage, he’s something different.

“I’m just the lucky man who gets to sit on him.

Tizzard said: “I don’t think it gets any better than that.

“He was immaculate. He was brilliant.

“We came here because what went on at Cheltenham – he was a bit sketchy then.

“Any fears we had about Cheltenham last week were put to bed.

“We needed to get some runs into him before we decide what to do at Christmas.”

Coral and William Hill left Thistlecrack unchanged at 7-2 and 100-30 respectively for the Gold Cup in March.

Tizzard went on: “He looked more professional. He just guessed a bit last time and that’s why we ran him today, for the experience.

“The good thing about him is that he gives the fences plenty of daylight. The first time Tom really asked him was at the last and he was good at that.

“He did look as good as a novice gets today.”

On future plans, Tizzard, whose yard houses King George and Betfair Chase winner Cue Card, said: “He learned plenty from Cheltenham and whatever schooling you do at home they still have to do it on the racecourse.

“He was right on his game today and is probably just about getting fit now.

“You could not dream of it going any better, but as he was 1-8 you half expect it.

“I can’t believe I am talking about these sorts of horse, it’s lovely for us as a family yard and it just shows it can be done.

“The King George is a real test for any horse and I’m not sure he is ready for that yet. We will leave him in it for a while, just in case. All options need to be talked about.

“We’ve got to mind this horse, as we don’t want to go up the ladder six strides at a time and then slip back down.”

Battle Born looked like he needed the run after 772 days off
Hadrians Approach ran a cracker considering the way he was ridden, this horse has to be winning soon after two cracking runs the last two times but they need to give him a chance, he is being held up near the back and being asked to run wide the whole race, if they just race him closer to the pace and hug the inside rail he will be winning soon
Only one horse was going quicker than him at the finish and that was the second Carole’s Destrier,
Hopefully we can get a win later tonight and an eachway double
