Nov 16: Johnb’s Racing Tips & Chat

JOHNB got back to winning ways on Tuesday with his Nap taking the honours at 9-2.

That banked a 2.5pt profit for the day and our man is now 30.84pts down for November, with a double-stake tip advised for Wednesday.

Johnb says: “I have already advised Churchill for next year’s 2000 Guineas & Derby – he has been really impressive this season and my view is he will get even better next year.

“Blue Point on the other hand is harder to call for how he will progress next year. If he trains on then in my view it’s a straight fight between Blue Point & Churchill but in the Derby Churchill is the only horse for me – he gives me the same excitement as Golden Horn did.

“But to answer my question earlier the most impressive horse I have seen this year is BLUE POINT with Churchill and Annie Power a close second and third.”

      Incredible Acca lands almighty prize

Who knew Mondays at Musselburgh could be so lucrative? One racing fan did and it wasn’t just the Scottish track that offered big returns with our latest #BookieBashing hero taking us to the cleaners from both sides of the border.

A mega £4 each-way four-fold came in and duly delivered a whopping £19,570.40 with selections from three race tracks doing the business.

The bet was struck just in the nick of time too with only two minutes to go until the first winner was off.

That honour went to Quick Decisson in the 15:20 at Musselburgh with the 15/2 shot getting up by a neck to ensure a winning start.

A mad dash to Newcastle followed where the Richard Fahey-trained Young John managed to get the better of the jolly to complete a quick-fire double in the 15:30.

And if our punter was beginning to think that their luck was in then they surely would’ve been starting to sniff an almighty payday once 12/1 outsider The Mighty Don held on to score at Plumpton.

As it was, a trip back to Musselburgh was on the agenda 10 minutes later with the big prize now firmly in sight.

James Moffatt’s Smart Ruler had been running fairly well throughout the summer without ever really threatening. In fact, the 10-year-old veteran hadn’t won a race in two years.

However, that was set to change when Brian Hughes moved his charge into position and promptly hit the front two out in the 15:50.

The rest took care of itself and we can only imagine the scenes when he scored by half a length.

there’s certainly been worse ways to spend a Monday and winning the best part of 20 grand in little over half an hour will be pretty tough to top.

What was Denero’s four fold early this year, 4000/1 I think and would have been 17000/1 if the 5th came in. Just goes to show.

I am have an issue posting my tips for tomorrow are (all for small stakes):

    12.30 Warwick – Asum 11/10
    2.15 Fairyhouse – Emma Beag 8/1 EW
    6.10 Kempton – Qatar Man 11/8
    7.10 Kempton – Steve Rogers 7/1

Will try to post me write up as soon as possible.

    Thanks and GL all

    Evening everyone,

Tomorrow’s racing looks tricky but I did come close to having two strong bets.

    12.30 Warwick – Asum 11/10

I had a very strong word for asum on his debut last season and he really should have won- bugger (harry Skelton got it wrong). The winner of that race has come out this season and while he was pulled up (something not right) he was very well backed. I have a feeling asum has a very good chance of making up for that defeat tomorrow on his hurdles debut for the red hot yard. Nevertheless he is up against a few very talented horses and while he opened around the 5/2 2/1 mark I simply cannot have a large bet at a price I don’t rate as value (11/10 is much shorter than my tissue price) so only a small bet for me.

    2.15 Fairyhouse – Emma Beag 8/1 EW

A chance is taken on Emma Beag back on softer ground tomorrow. After a number of consistent showings she broke her maiden tag by 31 lengths back in august on heavy going. Yet, last time on better ground she disappointed, while she did travel ok into the race she found little for pressure and faded into 8th. With ground more to her liking, in a mares only race and the aid of promising jockey JJ selvin taking a handy 7lb of her back, I think she has a good chance of putting up a bold showing.

    6.10 Kempton – Qatar Man 11/8

Qatar man is a horse that I have been waiting for after a string of impressive performances. I noted down he is crying out for a mile and he gets this trip tomorrow in the 6.10. In his last race at Chelmsford he looked better as the race went on and he was only narrowly denied by 3/4 of a length at the finish, he only needed a few more yards and he would have grabbed the winner. Everything looks set for a big run tomorrow (he even has the aid of Luke Morris in the saddle) only problem is I can’t recommend him for a larger stake bet coming from draw 12. Widely drawn horses have a very poor record over a mile and kempton and while K think he may be good enough to overcome that I will only be playing small- but small fish can be sweet!

    7.10 Kempton – Steve Rogers 7/1 EW

Steve Rogers was terribly disappointing last time at musselburgh finishing only 5th but I am happy to take a chance on him again today returned after an absence. The goal for him will be making into the long distance final on all weather champions day, and he can kick that off tomorrow. Already proven on the allweather (over c&d) his second at ascot two starts back looks rock solid form and for a horse who has been highly tried this season this race looks slightly weaker than some he has run in. He has a good record fresh and there is every chance of a big run.

    Thanks and GL all

Like Qatar horse but Morris is on an awful run isn’t he and a bad draw at 11/8 all adds up to me as a no bet but like you say he is a horse I’ve been keeping an eye on in future….

      • Profile photo of

You are right Morris isn’t hitting the back of the net at the moment but as the allweather gets into full swing and other jockeys go abroad his class will shine through. 11/8 is short he is 6/4 this morning but I’m just taking a small risk that his quality will see him through from the draw but I don’t blame you for taking a watching brief.

        Any bets today?

    A small word on yesterday:

My strong fancy churchtown champ jumped superbly to win by an eased down 8 lenghts! He is one to watch for this season for sure. Incase anyone was wondering my gambling style is to keep stakes very low untill I spot a horse that ticks all of my required boxes then increase my stake. Like yesterday.

Anyone watch tge 1st race at Lingfield earlier roday?? I had the 2 MJ horses plus Kevin Ryans in a 50p EW trixie, 1st one was unlucky not to win never mind get placed as couple feet after line it was ahead of everyone but could only come 4th at 10/1, 9/2 & 13/2 winners(KR’s actually went off 9/4 from 13/2) but £22 could have easily been £354 :(
One to watch ‘Addicted To You’. Made up about 10 lenghts in final furlong

Would be good to see this matchup but can’t see it happening

Willie Mullins big guns still in frame for Morgiana Hurdle at Punchestown

Annie Power, Faugheen and Vroum Vroum Mag still feature among 10 entries in Sunday’s Morgiana Hurdle at Punchestown.

The star trio all run in the colours of Rich Ricci and are multiple Grade One winners in their own right, with Annie Power the reigning champion hurdler.

Faugheen will be coming back from an injury break if he lines up in the Grade One feature, with trainer Willie Mullins also having the choice of Ivan Grozny, Sempre Medici, Simenon and Nichols Canyon.

The latter is the only horse to have ever beaten Faugheen after winning this race at his expense last year.

Ex-Mullins inmate Apple’s Jade, who is now with Gordon Elliott, might bid to bounce back from a shock defeat at Down Royal earlier this month, while the Joseph O’Brien-trained Ivanovich Gorbatov is also on a retrieval mission after finishing only third on his return at Naas.

The Gavin Cromwell-trained Jer’s Girl, a dual Grade One winner, rounds out the possibles after a skin allergy forced her to miss an intended run at Navan last Sunday.

Mullins will not decide until later in the week which horses will run but is aiming to be well represented in a race he has won for the last five years.

“I expect to have a few runners in the race as it is an important race and a nice time of year,” said the Closutton handler.

“We will decide on more definite plans after the horses work this week but it is a race we are looking forward to.”

The days of a true Christmas song are over because they don’t sell, since the last one which was Band Aid 12 years ago we have had 3 charity songs, Rage Against the Machine and 7 X factor songs

You can’t make people like a song, I didn’t like the Military Wives song but still bought it, I didn’t like Rage Against the Machine but still bought it and promoted it and backed it for Number One but I must admit I do like this one, maybe because I like Tyketto and if it does get number one MS Society will get my winnings

MOUNTAINS OF MOURNE 20/1 ew 2.25 chep.
Won a hurdle race on this card last year from just 2lbs lower after a break of 8 months off the track. His only other win also came after a break of 7 months so clearly goes best when fresh. Today he runs after a break of 8 months and if hes going to be competitive then i suggest today is the day.

    Evening all,

After a good day yesterday I’m off in the search of value again tomorrow. With the racing looking tough I will be playing small again.

    1.35 Clonmel – Missypet 20/1 EW

A chance is taken on missypet at clonmel tomorrow. She has never looked a natural over fences, returning to hurdles tomorrow off a handy mark she looks overpriced at 20/1. Back in 2014 she was tried in a listed bumper before landing back to back hurdle wins at fairyhouse in an impressive manor, after rising in the weights she was sent chasing and while she posted some respectable efforts and maybe would have won if not unseating at the last 2 starts back she failed to record a sound round of jumping. Running off basement weight on her season reappearance I can’t resist a few quid each way.

2.25 Newcastle – Galilee Chapel 11/1 EW NB

It’s about time the consistent Galilee Chapel was given a crack over a mile and a half. I have always had him down as wanting further, even when winning over 10f 2 starts back he required every yard of the trip. I was surprised to see him over a mile last time at Newcastle and after some trouble in running 4f out he was switched wide and came home like a train to grab 3rd. While his handicap mark has been sneaking up this season Garry Whillans takes over in the saddle taking 5lb off his back and I feel he is open to further improvement over this new trip, hopefully leading to a big run tomorrow.

    3.00 Newcastle – Maulesden May 4/1 EW

Maulesden May has improved for the switch to the all weather on her last two starts. Running respectably on her surface debut finishing a close 4 she then improved again last time running an odds on southern raider within a length (front two well clear). She travelled well into her race that day and off the same mark today I am hopeful of her getting her head in front for a second time. Due to the competitive nature of this race I will be playing each way.

    3.10 Market Rasen – I Just Know 9/4 NAP

I Just Know went straight into my note book on chasing debut last time at Hexham. The 6yo scopey gelding left his hurdle form behind jumping superbly upfront (barring a mistake when idling at the last) quickening away to win by 10 lengths. He has been raised 9lb for that victory but this still could well be in his reach if building on that success for his in form yard. 9/4 looks a good value price and I would expect him to go off shorter tomorrow.

    Thanks and GL all
