IT was a slow start to July but Johnb is motoring now and back in profit after a terrific Tuesday.

He started the day 14.75 points down for the month and turned it around superbly with the nap, NB and double all winning for a profit of 18.5pts.

Our man is now 3.75pts up for July and here are his Wednesday picks as he looks for more of the same.

Golden Horn eclipses last two world champions

an analysis of the international scene according to Racing Post Ratings

GOLDEN HORN moved to the top of the global RPR rankings after breaking the heart of Britain’s leading older horse in the Coral-Eclipse Stakes on Saturday.

The unbeaten colt already held a huge advantage over his generation after twice dominating the runaway Irish Derby winner Jack Hobbs, but at the weekend he showed that same superiority over his elders.

It seems like nothing can touch John Gosden’s colt in Europe and with an RPR of 132 for his three-and-a-half length success over The Grey Gatsby (125) he stands out as a likely world champion.

In a good year, two or three horses break into the 130-club on RPRs, but standards have slipped in the last couple of years and Gosden’s colt already ranks above the last two world champions Just A Way (130) and Treve (131).

In fact, no horse has earned an RPR higher than 132 since all-time legends Frankel (143) and Black Caviar (133).

After just two Group 1 wins it may seem early to be lauding a potential world champion but it’s increasingly hard to make a case against him as he continues to beat the best horses around by clear daylight.

Another interesting angle on Golden Horn is the Sea The Stars comparison, as John Oxx’s colt was considered one of the best of all time after landing the Guineas-Derby-Eclipse treble, but after becoming the first ever Dante-Derby-Eclipse winner the world hasn’t latched on to Golden Horn in quite the same way.

Handicapping is all about superiority and hierarchy and while Gosden’s colt is still some way off the exploits of Black Caviar, who was markedly better than another superstar in Hay List, and Frankel, who was around six-lengths better than a host of multiple Group 1 winners, he’s already established an awful lot in just five career starts.

Frankie Dettori said he was the best three-year-old he had ever ridden, which would put him above huge names like Dubai Millennium, Treve, Raven’s Pass, Dubawi, Mark Of Esteem and Lammtarra. He’s not quite the best of those on RPRs yet but he’s certainly in the ballpark.

On Saturday he achieved what most three-year-olds need to gain a foothold in history by beating his elders. And he didn’t just beat The Grey Gatsby, he exposed him.

The Grey Gatsby is well known for his strong late finish. He got up late to defeat Australia in the Irish Champion Stakes and just failed to nail Free Eagle in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes last month after meeting trouble in running.

But after eye-balling Golden Horn for two furlongs up the long Sandown straight the four-year-old was unable to kick-on in typical fashion and instead curled up in the final furlong as he watched the relentless youngster dash clear to the line.

The form and ratings are well supported by Western Hymn and Cougar Mountain, who came within three-lengths and two-lengths of winning Group 1s at Royal Ascot on their previous starts, but couldn’t get within eight lengths of Saturday’s winner.

Put simply, Golden Horn looks head, shoulders, hooves and tail (and a bit more) the best horse in Europe over 1m2f to 1m4f and if he turns up for the King George in the same shape he should win by a good few lengths.

The potential negatives over his latest win are that Frankie is a genius at front-running tactics (although this was not a tactical race) and that The Grey Gatsby prefers to be held-up off a stronger pace. But in the end the superiority was clear and however the race was run Golden Horn would have won comfortably.

Connections are treading carefully regarding running plans and they will take time to decide whether he will take in the King George in three weeks time, for which he is an even-money favourite.

As mentioned in World Class last week he also remains a possible for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in October depending on the state of the ground. Any runs further afield seem unlikely.

    Mr f for now :)

I will also give Diletta Tommasa one last chance tomorrow at 12/1 e/w.

  26. johnb 3 years ago

      Golden horn
He would have lost on Saturday off level weights.
He got 11 pounds off the 2nd, that would be enough to turn the tables.
Trouble is the owners won’t run him as a 4 year old as he would have to race on fair terms I:e level weight against the older horses and owners won’t risk him losing as it would effect his stud value.
He is the best of an average crop of 3 year olds no doubt, but to mention him in the same sentence as frankel’s is laughable.
Frankel’s took non racing lovers breath away with his turn of foot, making decent horses look like sellers,

A lot of the over hype of golden horn is also down to Frankie being the jockey, and his comeback from being a smackhead.

Ask people in 10 years who won the 2015 Derby and they will say Dettori, not golden horn.
Ask people in 10 years time who rode frankel and not many will say queally, because frankel was the story, and in my opinion is head and shoulders a better horse than horn, despite this weeks joke ratings having them level.

  36. Duncan Poundcake 3 years ago

Rookie ,I would worry about Lightening Spear who was very impressive last time but seems fragile ,I’ll wait and see what turns up,Dougie you seem to have missed out Hanagan and Carberry from my moniker GL.
    Algonquin at Naas ? .

  37. Rookie 3 years ago

Haha thats true dougie weld greatrex C.

Is it just me or does anyone else think star links is over priced at 16/1? It seems to like it round wolverhampton, is winston’s only mount and the in form kirk’s sole runner at this meet. Seems like a fair e/w bet for me?

  38. busstop 3 years ago

    Hi all

great day yesterday 2 winners advised at 3/1 4/1 plus a non runner so plenty of profit

No jump cards today so nothing from me

    gl all

  39. NAGMAN 3 years ago

The Watcher – completely agree he isn’t on a level with Frankel but no horse ever has been and I doubt in my lifetime another horse ever will be but you can’t deny Golden Horn is something special.

He will only get stronger as a 4 year old and the way he quickened when Frankie asked it made it look to me like there was plenty more in hand there and remember ideally he didn’t want to make the running either. Just my opinion though

  40. johnb 3 years ago

Got to totally disagree about Frankel,
I think most people will know how little i respect the horse.
Don’t get me wrong I respect how he did it but not what he did,
That’s not the horses fault its connection being too scared or even knowing he couldn’t travel.

Frankel never travelled any further than York and horses like Black Caviar will always be higher in my opinion

  41. NAGMAN 3 years ago

Also you have to remember it’s unfair to say ‘if he didnt have the weight pull’ because the 3yr old allowance is there for a reason. It’s a big difference physically and mentally racing against older more experienced horses especially as you rightly say the current crop of 3 yr old are pretty average.

  42. johnb 3 years ago

I will also think the same of Golden Horn if he doesn’t go to the Arc because he will get retired at end of the season

  43. rawcs 3 years ago

hours of study has led me to let’s go 4:20 wolverhampton today. nice one yesterday johnb

  44. NAGMAN 3 years ago

Fair play JB I see your point but for me he was just visually the most impressive horse I have ever seen and he knew himself how good of a horse he was. He did have a bad temperament at times and admittedly that may be why they were scared of travelling, etc but when he was on song he blew everything else out of the water

  45. NAGMAN 3 years ago

Shame they always retire them from fear of losing stud value and I think it’s why more and more people love jump racing nowadays. All flat racing is is just a way of showcasing horses to make money from breeding which I know it always has been to some extent really but is still a shame for the racing fans.
