IT wasn’t a good day – unless you followed de niro’s horses or Greg’s nap – but with storms and FA Cup ties I wasn’t expecting one.
My two Super Singles finished 0-0 and I was a goal out on both my goals trebles – Swindon and Falkirk being the culprits. Falkirk were particularly unlucky as they were denied by some super saves by Rangers keeper Wes Foderingham.
Wimbledon beat the Top Treble as their good run of form ended with defeat at home to Yeovil and there was no joy with the long shots.
And so we came to the end of the month and it’s been a rollercoaster. After a decent run in the third week of January the Super Single total will be in the black or level pegging.
One thing people will have learned from this site is there is more profit to be find doing singles and goals bets than WDW accumulators. That may be stating the obvious but it’s also true to say singles are not for everyone – some just don’t have the staking power to make it exciting enough – so I’ll continue to put up a variety of bets.
There are two FA Cup ties – Carlisle v Everton and MK Dons v Chelsea and both Premier League clubs should be too good for lower-league opponents. A double pays just under evens at William Hill and you could add Celtic against Ross County in their League Cup semi-final for a treble that pays 13-8 with the same firm.
On the continent there are plenty of big names in action including Ajax at Roda, Juventus at Chievo early on and Sevilla at home to Levante. PSG at St Etienne is late in France, Bayern Munich are at home to Hoffenheim, Real Madrid entertain Espanyol and we also have the Milan derby.
First tip up is another btts treble starting with Caen v Nice. Both sides are enjoying better than expected seasons with Nice being the league’s second highest scorers behind PSG with 37. Nice have won two meetings between the sides 2-1 this season and the last five have brought up this market.
Add Feyenoord v Den Haag with the home men out to stop a run of four defeats in a row. They could do so but goals is the way to go with the last six meetings in Rotterdam producing 24 goals – with Den Haag netting in all of them (11). Their last away game produced a surprise 4-0 win at Heerenveen so both can score here.
Complete the treble with a 13-10 long shot and if the first to come I’ll be covering Moreirense v Benfica. Moreirense have never beaten Benfica in 17 meetings but know how to score against them. Btts has come up in six of the last seven clashes and it was 3-2 in Lisbon earlier this season. Benfica and btts pays 5-2 at Betfred and star striker Jonas is 3-1 with William Hill to score first.
I was going to have a quiet day but after a couple of Desperados I’m feeling braver and putting up a long shot sevenfold that will just about clear the January losses.
With the accumulators it’s much harder to make a profit, especially with long shots, in there so only take this if you fancy its chances – and for me there’s nothing daft in there but when you put up seven there’s always the likelihood one will beat you. The early ones have come in so we’re off to a good start.
Some scorers to look at in these games include Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski, Celtic’s Leigh Griffiths and Real’s Cristiano Ronaldo but bookies aren’t giving much away with the treble paying no bigger than 12-5 at boylesports.
For a Top Treble I’m taking a chance on Valencia. Gary Neville is yet to chalk up a win in La Liga but has a great chance against struggling Sporting Gijon who have lost eight of 11 on the road.
Valencia reached the Spanish Cup semi-finals in midweek to give Neville a boost and they remain unbeaten at the Mestalla although seven of their 10 outings have finished all square.
I thought about adding Lazio at Udinese, Celta Vigo at Las Palmas or Nice at Caen but to complete the treble I’m on Real Madrid -2 AH and Bayern Munich -2AH. Both have impressive h2h’s against today’s opponents and both should win with plenty to spare.
For the Super Single I’m going double or quits on a biggie. Callum McGregor has been in fine form for Celtic and has a reputation for scoring in big games. The midfield provide plenty of goals and it could be his or Nir Bitton’s turn. McGregor is 8-1 at Paddy Power.
