Jan 29: Johnb’s Racing Tips & Chat

JOHNB was out of luck with his Saturday tips although one of shortlisted horses won at 10-1 and it was good to see a few of you on it.

Well done all who posted winners and our man’s Sunday tips have now been added.

First of all it was sad news about Many Clouds, forget about his win in this race in 2015 and his Grand National win, this race on Saturday was his best run ever and he showed just how hard he battles and never gives up, this race yesterday was head and shoulders above anything he had done before and that’s not just because he beat Thistlecrack “who was ridden completely wrong” but what these two horses have done to the rest of the field, Smad Place beaten 17 lengths, Silviniaco Conti beaten 44 lengths, Kylemore Lough beaten 47 lengths, these are good horses that have been made to look ordinary, so Many Clouds deserves all the praise he is getting but ultimately being such a give it all horse has cost him his life, early on it wasn’t up to much as it was a slow race but the second half of the race has taken its toll, we don’t really know what happened but we do know only the very best vets are in attendance at racetracks and the horse would have been in the very best of hands, RIP Many Clouds.

Onto the race and although Thistlecrack has run one of his best races I can’t understand why connections would change a winning formula, it was a slow early pace and Thistlecrack has been kept in behind the leaders, I can see the idea but just can’t understand it, connections have set out to try something different and yes it’s better doing it now rather than in the big one, they have kept him away from the front so he doesn’t get as much time to see his fences and to see how “although a small field” he would cope in amongst horses, like I said I can see why they have done it and he has done it well and just been beat by a great horse who has run his best race but it’s not Thistlecrack this, Thistlecrack is not a horse you run conservatively, Thistlecrack is a horse you take chances with, Thistlecrack is a horse who gives you heart in mouth moments when jumping but he wasn’t allowed to yesterday , Thistlecrack is a horse that runs his rivals into submission with his high cruising speed and bold jumping but he wasn’t allowed to do that Saturday,

Ruby Walsh says you would have to worry about Thistlecrack and an extra furlong in the Gold Cup, get a grip Ruby,
At no point have any of the two horses stopped in the finish, both horses have run all the way to the line and the extra furlong in the Gold Cup won’t be a problem trust me,
I think the bookies have overreacted by going 9/4 from odds on, so much so that I have invested in him again and also had an eachway on Alary at 66/1
The Cotswold on Saturday was run in a good time considering the early slow pace and Thistlecrack has still cruised up to the last fence but been beat by a horse that never gives up, a horse that is a great jumper and he has been out battled by a more experienced horse, although Tom Scudamore won’t say it he wasn’t really in a hard drive finish, he has used the whip but the last 50 yards he hasn’t really been strong and if Thistlecrack is given a battle in the Gold Cup just watch the difference

In the Gold Cup expect the tactics to be back to normal as he runs his rivals into the ground but this time is for Many Clouds and my last word is again for a great horse Many Clouds who ran the perfect race and deserved the win and will always be remembered for this win,
    Many Clouds a true champ

Sorry but last year it was Willie mullins didn’t know what what he was doing cause he wouldn’t listen to you (apparently) and now ruby doesn’t know what he’s talking about either(get a grip ruby) lol how many races have you won at Cheltenham johnb ????

With stories there is a difference between fiction and science fiction and your version isn’t exactly correct,
I have previously said that I think Willie Mullins gets a bit more credit than he should as he really gets the cream when it comes to horses but he still has to train them and there is nobody better at getting horses ready for a certain time of year,
Going back to the Mullins thing last year, I said I emailed Willie Mullins which isn’t strange for me as I contact trainers and jockeys regularly and the true story was that I mentioned that in my opinion Annie Power should be aimed at chasing as I thought she would win a Gold Cup and emulate Dawn Run, she is bred to be a chaser and a very good chaser, Faugheen as well is bred to be a chaser, I did put a few other things in my message but that’s not for now,
Anyway Willie Mullins has compared Annie Power to Dawn Run and has said he would have wanted to go chasing with her but it was up to the owners but he did say she was bought to be a chaser,
Rich Richi has also come out and said he would have liked to have gone chasing with Annie Power because she is bred to be a chaser but it was his wife that said no,
Other trainers, jockeys and analysts have also said Annie Power and Faugheen were meant to go over fences, even that Faugheen was bred for the Gold Cup
I have never said that Willie Mullins or Ruby Walsh don’t know what they are talking about,
With Ruby Walsh yesterday I just think there might be a little bit of jealousy as he knows he won’t be winning Cheltenhams big prize this year but I wouldn’t be stupid enough to say he doesn’t know what he is talking about,
I made rather a lot of comments last year that people on here didn’t agree with, like

Min was the lay of the meeting ✔

Yanworth was the second best lay of the meeting ✔

Yorkhill was the bet of the day at Cheltenham on day two ✔

Limini my bet of the meeting ✔

Native River my second best bet of the meeting ✔

Thistlecrack my third best bet of the meeting ✔

The day before Thistlecrack won the World hurdle he was advised at 20/1 to win the King George ✔
and 20/1 to win the Gold Cup ✔✖️ Pending

I can’t always get it right though, I said I thought Don Cossack wasn’t a Cheltenham horse ✖️
      He won the Gold Cup

And I haven’t won any races at Cheltenham but I do know a thing or two

johnb everyone have a opinion, and my opinion is thistlecrack had his first real test yesterday and he got beat, thistle went a slight bit in front of many clouds on the run in but many clouds was going away from him just as they got to the line ,with another furlong and a half the gold cup trip i think thistle would have struggled i could be wrong and i hope i am because a lot of people have backed thistlecrack at 20/1 on your advice, just reading back over your post i have to agree with ruby

    • Profile photo of Johnb
      Johnb 1 year ago

If a lot of people have backed him for the Gold Cup on my advise then surely they would have backed him at 20/1 for the King George,
It keeps coming down to one race and I can’t understand why?, antepost bets are like the day to day bets where it’s all about long term, if Churchill gets beat this season it’s disappointing but it’s not the end of the world as long term antepost bets are well in front, if Thistlecrack gets beat it’s disappointing because I expect him to win every race I advise him for but at least we got him at 20/1 for two wins
I keep telling people it’s all about long term but if people think Day to day, race to race then they will never win

As I said earlier, Thistlecrack did have reserves left and Scudamore realises that the big one is only a few weeks away,
People also have to realise that Thistlecrack isn’t trained to be 100% at the end of January, everything for Thistlecrack is geared for the third week of march and yesterday’s race ended up being nothing but a learning mission for connections who wanted to try something different,
You have your opinion and if you agree with Ruby then fair enough but time and time again I have proved myself even when the people who are meant to know more say the opposite to me but if Thistlecrack turns out to be another One Man then I will hold my hand up but when a horse gets beat it’s always too easy for people to say it didn’t stay, I hear it all the time

    Morning all,

Overall it was a dissapointing day for me yesterday with 6 points lost. Uknowhatimeanharry managed to pull it back for me thankfully. I was very sad to see the new regarding Many Clouds, he was a true legend in our sport. Regards Thistlecrack I can’t see him winning the gold cup after the round of jumping he produced yesterday where his over exuberance cost him dearly in my opionion- he still looks far too short in the market. One bet for me today and it is an increased selection.

    13.50 Sedgefield – Volvalien 7/4

I tipped up this horse last time after this pervious C&D scorer has impressed with his jumping this season. On chase debut he ran out a good second to the very progressive Presenting Lisa at Huntington. Next time out he won here at Sedgefield- producing a battling display and a good round of jumping. On his last two runs he has finished 3rd/2nd in two very useful races at Sandown and Newcastle. He is only 1lb higher than his last run and his mark of 116 could still under estimate this horse and as a result he can go very close today. Volvalien revives weight from all his opposition alongside this Ash Park takes a step back in trip which I am unsure of and his jumping has question marks. Applesandpierres is unexposed but is yet to jump a fence under rules and his lack of experience may cost him. Brian Ellison racing is the sponsor of today’s race and I think he has a outstanding chance of recouping some of his outlay with Volvalien. With all criteria met I have to increase my stake- as always nothing is assured (15points win).

I have to mention the 2.00 Leopardstown were a number of my previous bets run against each other. Blood crazed tiger, Peace news and Montalbano all take on Let’s Dance in what is a mouth watering contest. While I will not be backing any of them today I would be hopeful of big runs today from all of them, but I do think Montalbano may be overpriced and open to more improvement.

    Jan: Around 3 points up
    Overall: Around 150 up
*I will get these sorted when I’m back at my desk.

Many thanks and GL to all
