    Grand National fever has arrived,
I even managed 5 winners in a row
    1996 Rough Quest
    1997 Lord Gyllene
    1998 Earth Summit
    1999 Bobbyjo
    2000 Papillon
But I think the majority of people if asked for a National highlight myself included would say 1981 Aldaniti

The 1981 Grand National was all about one man and his horse,
The man was jockey Bob Champion who had been given eight months to live,
The horse was Aldaniti who broke down not once but twice with two serious tendon injuries,
When he broke down the second time at Sandown vets advised connections to put the horse down as he would never race again, he spent six months in his stable with his leg in plaster and only returned to Josh Gifford’s stable on the 1st January 1981, three months before the Grand National,
both came back to win, after mistakes at the first two fences he jumped well over the remaining fences,
In 29th place at Becher’s Brook first time round Aldaniti jumped to the front four fences later and with his solid jumping the rest of the field were beaten off one by one

It was a fairytale win that captured the hearts of a nation, punters were sending Bob Champion their winnings from the race which started the Bob Champion Cancer Trust,
Even a film about the two was released in 1994 called Champions.
Some people think fairytales only happen in the movies,
but some movies are inspired by fairytales
I was 11 in 1981 and 35 years later I still get emotional watching that race

Got the DVD, John hurt played Bob champion.
      I remember the commentary
‘ And here comes John Thorne, 54 year old John thorne putting in a storming finish , great commentary by the great Peter o Sullivan.
As he closed on the Hunter chaser Spartan missile
As I am a postman I would have backed the third, royal mail, but I was only 14 then and too young to dabble.

In 1982 the Hunter chaser grittar won
Was he the last active Hunter chaser to win ?
Just been through the winners since, thought silver birch might have been, but think he won the cross country at cheltenham, which is probably is what I’m getting cross wired with.

What are the rules regarding duplicate horse names. I thought once a name was used it couldn’t be used again.
As I said above royal mail was 3rd in 1981.
A horse called royal mail also won the race in 1937..
Unless the horse was over 50 years old that is , haha, and in fact the same horse.

The 1937 winner was ridden by one Evan Williams.
Was he related to the same named current trainer.
Don’t know myself, just though it was a coincidence ???

Once a horse retires the name can be used again but it is possible to have two horses with the same name to be in training at the same time but they have to have a different suffix at the end like (GB) (IRE) (FR) (USA) ) (NZ) and so on
For example there were two Binokular’s
BINOCULAR (FR) was owned by J P McManus trained by Henderson

BINOCULAR (GB) was trained in Ireland

          Both were born in 2004

There was also two named Denman
The Chaser born 2000 & a flat horse owned by Sheikh Mohammad in Australia born 2006

In 2001 at a meeting at Kempton there was two horses named Red Blazer

Red Blazer (GB) won the 1:35 race then Red Blazer (NZ) ran in the 2:10 race

I think there have been about 6 horses named Invisible Man

I’m old enough to remember Red Rum’s wins, the first bet I had was one my Dad put on for me on his third victory, all of my pocket money for the week, he still felt embarrassed collecting such a small amount but I still watch it on YouTube from time to time, can’t beat those memories.

My favourite national horse in my early teens was the pilgarlic. Always remembered this one paced horse plodding on past better horses
        1977 4th
        1978 5th
        1979 4th
        1980 3rd
Apart from red rum, how many other horses have paid each way money 4 years on the trot ????

Noticed you named Lord gyllene 1997 there John.
Most impressive winner I’ve seen in the national.
Badly hampered at one point and went on to gallop to a 25 length win over sunny bay. And ridden by the ironic horsey named jockey, Tony dobbin

Memories, remember minehommer winning for Freddie star, 22/1 , dunwoody in the saddle, earth summit got backed into 5/1 on the day due to the awful going, only a few finished?? Ted Walsh and papilon, and sure it was p Carbury on and 10s on the day. Montys pass with Barry G at 16s, then the local Amberley house backed both times.! Amazing what sticks in the brain… GL Saturday.

Jim best banned for 4 years for not allowing horses to run on their merits.
      In other words ‘cheating’
For me he has no place in a profession where owners and punters money are being dishonestly mis managed, life ban would have sent a clear message that this sort of ‘cheating won’t be tolerated.

hey guys i rarely do football betting these days has compared to horses it just doesn’t hold any value or as much has you’d like for the amount you wage however every 2 years there is the chance to earn serious money for a relatively small amount . buy betting on the euros and world cup with the group stages straight forecasts bets of £1 will return a minimum of £1000 i have done a mixture totaling £80 but the big money is picking where all teams will finish the likely hood of doing this may seem ridiculous however most 1st and 2nd spots are relatively easy to guess and a bet of 10p will pay a minimum of £10,000 usually a lot more now ive made 1642 selections i believe at 10p a line which has totaled around £170 so thats only £240 staked or close to it it only takes one hit and your year is paid for maybe your mortgage if the right combo lands the reason i am fairly confident is thus unlike the world cup the euro’s are obviously played in Europe in this case France which has relatively mild weather also the pitches will be perfect and the country is not all that large so travelling between group games shouldn’t have a vital impact we see pretty much all this players week in week out across the major European leagues so getting a good view of there abilities and where the main threats are i think bar one or two groups the draws have been very kind and you can expect one or two mild upsets but they wont be upsets like the world cup all conditions will suit and at 10p a line you can cover many many angels i used sky bet and it took a matter of minuets to put them all on i realize none of you are foo’s and this is the racing thread however for those who wernt aware i wanted to point it out ill post this on football forums at a later date im only saying this now has a few company’s wont let you put the bets into multiples and i wouldn’t be surprised to see the market get pulled has tournament approaches odds will drop when squads are confirmed also if anyone chooses to have a dabble all the best and good luck

gengar, don’t promise people big wins. There’s always the chance 1 or 2 will let you down which is why bookies will always take these bets.

      shaky 8 months ago

I don’t follow this at all. To get an accumulator to return anywhere near 100,000/1, each group winning forecast price would need to average out at around 6/1. The most likely outcomes for each group only works out about 1800/1 for the 6-fold. You would need a few big priced outcomes for this to happen, and to have a chance of hitting these , you’d need to perm at least 5 of the 12 possible outcomes from each group which would cost over 15,000 unit stakes.

      • Profile photo of gengar
        gengar 8 months ago

well yees and no i was wrong in that 10k on 10p is minimun the lowest win possible on 10p is just over 4000 the max win i can achive on my picks is 60,000 presuming i win at all as mr f said nothing guarenteed are you looking at straight forcast or group forcasts because if you pick lowest price on all groups its 40,000/1 and slight change it jumps a lot

        • Profile photo of shaky
          shaky 8 months ago

Sorry, I was looking at prices for the straight forecasts for each group. Are you talking about naming all 4 team in the correct order for each group? Yeah, that would give you the better returns then. Looks pretty tough to perm only 3 or 4 outcomes from a possible 24 across all 6 groups, without one random result screwing it up. Good luck though!

          • Profile photo of gengar
            gengar 8 months ago

well thats the gamble mate unless somthing freak happens which could though unlikley a lot of the forcasts like over 60% are just so unlikley to happen like germany spain england france italy belgium portugal austria arnt going to be in last position barring a complete freak and again serisouly unlikley to be third so that cuts out 1000s of possible outcomes its just with the travelling and weather conditions and pitches and style of teams major upsets are lot less likley then they were playig in south america in worldcup but you are right its still gamble and only takes one hiccup but thanks all same fingers crossed mate

Lately I have been noticing a market that nobody seems to bet on in my local bookies.
Just before the off of most races you can bet against the favorite.
I dont know how many times it came in, but it certainly seems like a way to make a few quid if you think a SP fav wont handle the ground

I think NOTIFICATION 5.30 fairy might be worth an ew. Was 10lths behind Tipped Up Harry LTO who went in again off 10lbs higher so looks like the best form on offer imo.

3 days no winner, must do better
    April 6.75 points up

Really good racing on Wednesday with all flat meetings and some good bets with a lot of strong contenders for my tips

    Wednesday’s Tips

    Catterick
    2:30
    Dark Ruler 8/1 NB racebets

    Nottingham
    3:20
    Poyle Vinnie 6/4 NAP racebets

    4:25
    Greenside 3/1 racebets

    Kempton
    7:15
    Smiley Bagel 9/2 racebets

As well as the singles I am also advising a 0.25 point Yankee which is a total of 6.75 points staked

My shortlist horses which didn’t make it as tips were

    Kempton 7:45 Lord George

Nottingham 3:50 Clever Cookie (not tipped because odds on at 10/11)

    Lingfield 2:10 Anjuna Beach

A lot is said on here about Michael Appleby horses at Southwell and time and time again I tell people that yes he gets a lot of winners because he trains on the track but backing all his runners has massive losses to level stakes,
But I have mentioned over the last two years that his most profitable track is Nottingham but the bookies still haven’t reacted to that yet so watch out for his runners at Nottingham

Re Mick Appleby… it depends on whether you back the right horses john 😉

At the moment because bookies haven’t twigged the odds on Nottingham runners mean it has been profitable backing all his runners
The difference with Southwell is that his runners there are all shorter odds than they should be by a big margin

Well it’s only about 15 miles from Southwell to Nottingham.
Little Pippin 5.25 Nottingham ,1 from 1 at the course,1 from 1 on Heavy ground ,owned by the trainer and running from 4lbs out of the handicap, slowly away last time ,finished well so should stay the extra distance .16/1 too big IMO (20/80) GL.

John Gosden is also a trainer that likes to have winners at Nottingham shame he only has the one runner tomorrow and it’s fav at 6/4 fav but I’m hoping it can get us off and running with Frankie on board. 2.20 STRATUM.

As mentioned above by JohnB Saint Are made the cut yesterday with a few drops. In timely fashion Tom George fired in another winner with Noche De Reyes and had this to say about Saint Are “The horse is as good as we can have him and I just hope we can keep him right for the next few days.”

“We’ve had a lot of winners in the last fortnight, the horses seem to be in tip-top shape and we’ll keep our fingers crossed for the bit of luck you need and we’ll see what happens.”

I’m going to back it again with any profit made in the run up to the National.

    2 i like at leopardstown

NEWBURY NEW 6.00 13/2 coral back on the flat looks thrown in off 68

DONT QUIT 6.00 12/1 EW Also looks well hcapped. Was 2nd beaten 1 1/4L to Jagen H’ghar (rated 75) here on first run over a mile having been beaten 3Ls over 7f by the same horse. Upped to 10f today should suit based on that run and dropped 1lb. Also drawn 1 so should be handily placed.
