SFUMATO (5.55) is a very interesting traveller to Chepstow from Iain Jardine’s base outside Dumfries.
The gelding is best over six furlongs on quick ground and that is what he will get at the Welsh track. His recent third to Dapper Man over five furlongs was an eye-catcher and races off a 2lb lower mark this evening. Factor in Patrick Vaughan’s 7lb claim plus a first-time visor and things look well set up for Sfumato, a winner over six furlongs at Lingfield for previous trainer Roger Charlton.
BID ADIEU (9.05) has a big chance in the finale. Maroc and Glens Wobbly both like to blast off in front and the race may well be set up nicely for Richard Hughes’s gelding. He didn’t seem to get home over an extra two furlongs when mastered by Volpone Jelois at the last Chepstow fixture and previously he was hampered when fifth at Windsor.
QUEEN OF CONNAUGHT (8.35) drops back into novice stakes grade after her respectable fifth to Royal Ascot-bound Perfect Clarity in the Lingfield Oaks Trial. She had previously beaten Sir Michael Stoute’s Phantasmic at Wolverhampton over tonight’s 1m 4f trip.
AWESOME ALLAN (8.05 is kept busy but stands his racing well. His course and distance third to Harry Beau and Oeil De Tigre looks very solid with the runner-up going on to score three times at Goodwood. The drop to five furlongs is a slight concern but he’ll go off an each-way price.
Mark Johnston’s fancied Sandown raiders always seem to go well at the Esher track. ACLIMATISE (3.45) won’t be a terrific price under Ryan Moore but is officially 3lb well in.
Alan King runs BERINGER (4.50) under a 6lb penalty after the son of Sea The Stars won with plenty in hand at Leicester. His previous second to Shuhood at Newmarket is working out with the third and fourth horses, Whitehall and Morning Skye, performing well next time.
I’ll be having a decent each-way bet at big prices on a couple at York, both running in seriously competitive handicaps.
Old boy ALFRED HUTCHINSON (3.30) has been given a chance by the handicapper, having been dropped a pound for his fourth to Magic City here almost three weeks ago. He is a stone better off at the weights with the winner and has a terrific record at the Knavesmire. Stall 18 isn’t ideal but with some firms going five places, Alfred Hutchinson is too tempting to resist.
Another handicapper with proven York form is COTE D’AZUR (2.20). The gelding ran sixth in a Listed contest won by Here Comes When (runs 4.05) here last May and has been dropped 7lbs in the interim. He likes to get out in front and led his group for a long way when third in last autumn’s Cambridgeshire. His most recent run, again at York, saw Cote D’Azur finish sixth to Manjaam but that came over 1m 4f, a distance well in excess of his best. The hood is on today and I’ll be disappointed if he is not involved.
If there are funds available after an exhausting day’s punting SAROOG (8.45) should readily break his duck in the 1m 6f maiden at Goodwood.

Egypt v Uruguay (Friday 1pm)
On a going day Uruguay should be able to get 3 goals against Egypt but my worry is Egypt will be going for a 0-0 draw and Uruguay could get a bit frustrated which is why I am not going for a goals bet in this match,
Instead I am willing to risk a player that probably won’t start or could even not play at all, Maximiliano Gómez is a player I rate really highly as I have previously said, he has to be one of the most exciting young talents at this World Cup
He has five caps and is yet to score for his country but his record at club level is pretty good, 47 appearances for Defensor Sporting saw him score 28 goals before a move to Celta Vigo where he has played 36 times and scored 17 goals, the €4m Celta paid looks an absolute steal and he could be on his way to Tottenham or Dortmund in the summer but would cost about €50m, I would be surprised if one of the big clubs didn’t come in for him,
He has everything in his game, excellent technical skills and ball control, he has speed and looks to make runs in behind the defence and protects the ball well, he has a good shot and is also a big threat in the air, he is strong on the ball, hardworking and a team player, back home in Uruguay they are hailing him as the new Suarez but in my opinion Maxi Gómez is going to be better than Suárez,
Definitely a player to keep an eye on, now and in the future but definitely worth a chance of playing in this game but you could wait to see the team selection first if you want.

Morocco v Iran (Friday 4pm)
Morocco are one of my selections for the tournament and yes I am getting stick for picking them, although I have said it is more likely for them to not win the World Cup than for them to win it “doesn’t take a genius to work that out as they are 500/1” but I do like them to have a decent tournament and to be top African team, Morocco have a decent squad and are in a group that looks straight forward for Spain & Portugal to go through but as we have seen in previous tournaments the favourites don’t always qualify,
Morocco have quite a few talented players especially going forward like Ajax’s Hakim Ziyech, he has spent his whole career so far in the Netherlands, even playing for the Netherlands at U21 level but decided to represent Morocco at senior level, he is an attacking midfielder with balance, quick feet, has a knack of finding space, can spot teammates and produce good defence splitting passes and has a good shot himself as long as it’s not from long range although he can produce some good free kicks and his long range passing is superb.
Bought for €11m in 2016 he has played 166 games in the Netherlands with 57 goals and 75 assists, he was thought by some to have been Eredivisie best player last season and could take this World Cup by storm before what’s looking like a move to Roma although Everton, Arsenal, West Ham and Liverpool have all been interested in him and Ziyech is definitely worth a bet to score here, so too is Ayoub El Kaabi who has the ultimate rags to riches story, at the time of the last World Cup he was training as a carpenter and living in the slums of Mediouna on the outskirts of Casablanca, he has only been playing as a striker for two years after being tried at nearly every outfield position, in those two years he has scored 47 goals in 56 matches at club level and at international level he has scored 11 goals in 9 matches for Morocco and will soon be looking forward to a big money move abroad.
North African teams are believed to be better than other African teams because a number of north African countries have players who learned their trade at academies in Europe, but it is Morocco who arrive at this World Cup with the most foreign-born players – seventeen of their 23-man squad were born outside the country and trained at Europe’s best academies,
Morocco went through qualifying undefeated and continued that form through their World Cup warm up matches, their undefeated streak now stands at 18 games where they have scored 43 goals and conceded just 8 goals and the bet for Morocco to score over 1.5 goals looks good here
