Yesterday's sole selection was unfortunately ran down inside the final furlong, after looking like the winner for the entire race up until that point. It was a great effort, and once again there were simply no excuses.

Today's racing looks rather dreadful, and there are plenty of short priced horses, which could be used for a decent multiple bet. I'm not one for backing horses under EVS, which is fortunate that the one I do like is EVS at the time of writing, so I can get away with it.

Carrying top weight in a handicap is never the ideal scenario, but if there's ever a time to do it, it's when the opposition is weak. HERE WE HAVE IT shares top weight with the Donald McCain trained horse, and then the remaining three horses in the race, race off bottom weight, which goes to show the level of opposition that they are up against.

The drop in trip looks to be a wise decision made by the trainer of the selection, L J Morgan, as he travelled nicely into his race last time out at Huntingdon, but his efforts petered out. He made a move from the rear of the field around three from home, and he did that quite quickly, which didn't seem to help his chances, as it emptied a lot of his petrol. His stamina doesn't look assured over 2m 4f, so the drop to the minimum distance looks a positive. Despite what happened at Huntingdon, I still think he ran a decent enough race, against a horse who was clearly well handicapped in terms of the winner. That was his first start over fences, so improvement is definitely expected, and the fact that he's had over a month off since that race suggests they've gone back to the drawing board and tried to iron out his jumping so it is much better this time. It sounds like he didn't jump well on chase debut, with the comments I've made, but that wasn't the case. For a novice and on chase debut, he jumped well enough to suggest he has a future over the larger obstacles, and in a weak race like this, he should be breaking his maiden tag.

    Hi All
Putting this up now as I won’t have time either tonight or tomorrow.

Day 1 of the Dublin Racing Festival starts tomorrow and am looking forward to it very much. Some of the races though are real puzzles and very difficult to work out, but we’ll give it a go anyway.
The course itself has been watered daily for the whole month of January. I believe something in the region of 160mm have been put down to try have some cut in the ground. It rained very heavily last night and there’s been a number of showers today.

1.05 Just the 7 runners now which is a shame as I took Eric Bloodaxe ew but with only 2 places you couldn’t be confident he’d win but at least I know he’ll stay the trip better than most.

1.35 Very informative race but not a betting race for me. I will however be keeping a close eye on Ben Siegal as I have him backed for the Boodles. Hopefully he doesn’t win tomorrow but finishes about 3-4 lengths behind and that will do me. Wins and he goes Triumph.

2.10 Another tough race to work out. Riviere D’etel sets the standard imo but how hard a race did she have against Ferny Hollow only time will tell I guess.
I’ve not had a bet yet but I’m drawn to Saint Sam at the prices. He beat thedevilscoachman by 9L (FH beat him by 6 1/2L) with El Barra a further 1 1/4L behind in 3rd. Blue Lord only beat him by 5 1/2 L, so on collateral form he must have a chance and at the prices I’d rather back him but I’ll wait nearer the time.

I backed this horse on Thursday once he became declared for this race and not Sandown. His price dropped from 20s to 10s but I see he’s as low as 7s now. Only 1 horse has won this race carrying above 10st 12lbs since 2015 and this horse gets in here off bottom weight and looks thrown in.

3.15 This is a total headscratcher. It’s said now that Rachael Blackmore doesn’t get on with Minella Indo, so HDB has turned to puppy power to see how they get on. If it’s a success he will ride him in the GC.
I just can’t have MI based on that and the fact the Yard has had 1 winner for the whole month of Jan.
Frodon will run his race and will be thereabouts, Asterion Forlonge is Asterion Forlonge and will probably upscuttle one of the fences, but would have every chance if staying on his feet.
Kemboy is the safest option imo. He never runs a bad race at this track and this will be his GC as he won’t go to Cheltenham.

3.50 A prize of 60k to the winner and its a pretty poor field for such a big prize.
A Wave of the Sea won it last year but he also won at the festival the previous year.
He’s 8lbs higher but jockey takes 3lbs off and I think he can do a repeat. Mt Leinster will go off like a train but won’t see the trip out and I can see WOTS finishing strongly as he’s been running over further lately. JOB’S horses are going well too.

4.25 I think Facile Vega wins, but I’ve backed Sandor Clegane in the w/o market at 11/4. Facile Vega finished 6L ahead of Joyeux Machin of Nolan’s Yard. He rates Sandor Clegane higher so must fancy his chances of going close. There were big doubts as to whether he’d run due to the ground as he wants soft, but it seems he’ll be taking his chance.
