MILESEY enjoyed another good day at the races on Tuesday with four winner including his outsider.

Here are his picks for Tuesday and remember to put up your own tips.

Wincanton 3.00
SUSTAINABILITY 2.5

Taken up another 3lb today but can't see that being enough to stop this horse from winning this one. The yard are in form and he was beaten last time out but gave a good performance.

Wincanton 3.30
XAARCET 7.4

Better off in the weights or this race and is a horse on the up with plenty of scope.

Lingfield 2.10
IRISH BUCCANEER 1.63 (nap)

Based on its last run-out will be tough to beat with the runners in this field. Lost to better company last time out and shouldn't have a problem here.

Bangor 4.20
COVERHOLDER 1.53 (nap)

Running off a weight lower then last time out when it won to complete the four-timer, his new mark of 110 comes in three days so is well in here.

Lingfield 3.10
LITTLE JIMMY 3.05

This horse on the up is being slipped into fields at the moment where he doesn't have to perform to his best to win the races. Will be able to defy the weight rise and nothing I can see will give this horse any trouble.

Can only find one horse I actually think will win at Kempton, the rest i'd be hard to pick out anything I would be confident taking. So for me it's just:

Kempton 6.00
DESERT DONKEY 2.54

Only just beaten last time out and on that day had an amateur on board but the experience of David Probert on board will give this horse every chance of winning this one. Off a mark of 64 I give this one every chance of making a winning handicap debut.

Lingfield 4.10
TEN FIRES 16.5 (outsider)

Took a risk on this horse last time out and couldn't handle the going on that day.I hope the ground has firmed up a bit more to give this horse more of a chance to at least get in the places.

Bangor 3.20
SARANDO 10.5 (outsider)

This handicap hurdle may just give this horse a chance off a mark of 120. Has been struggling of late so let's hope for a great run.

Ivan Vasilevich was successful twice over hurdles last summer, and ran well in defeat when last seen at Ffos Las in August. Needs to pick up a penalty if he’s to have a chance to fulfil Cheltenham Festival ambitions.

Home Run has really come good over hurdles recently, completing a 5-timer at Musselburgh (2m) on New Year’s Day and better still when runner-up in competitive events on last 2 starts. Can go well again.

Suerte Al Salto was a Fontwell bumper winner who shaped promisingly when runner-up in pair of novice hurdles in November. Added to sequence of seconds in jumpers’ bumper last month, and should have more to offer.

Xaarcet has been most progressive since sent handicapping, and completed a hat-trick over 2¾m here in the mud 11 days ago. That trip the limit of his stamina, and should have the speed to cope with this lesser test.

Tiny Tenor showed ability in bumpers, and matched form of hurdles debut when fourth to My Tent Or Yours at Huntingdon last time. Bit more needed to defy opening mark, but in good hands, and should do better.

Islandmagee finished in the frame on all 3 starts in bumpers, and improving with experience over hurdles. Did well given way race was run when winning handicap at Kempton last time, and 5 lb rise may undervalue that effort.

In The Crowd looked nothing out of ordinary in 4 runs on Flat for Alan Swinbank, but off the mark at second attempt in juvenile hurdles in December. Only seventh on handicap bow at Ludlow last time, though.

A useful handicap hurdler, Ciceron (14:20 Bangor) has taken well to fences, running creditably on a few occasions, including last time when placed in a competitive handicap at Musselburgh. Ciceron has actually finished placed on his four most recent starts, failing to get his head in front, but there is no reason to question his attitude and he appears to have been found a good opportunity in this beginners’ chase. His Musselburgh effort just about sets the standard here and, with Venetia Williams continuing to fire in the winners, he should be able to get off the mark over fences.

Gary Moore is another trainer that has been in excellent form of late and it could be worth siding with his Tothemoonandback in the 15:40 at Lingfield. There was real encouragement to take from his handicap debut at Ascot three starts back, shaping better than the bare result in coming from off the pace to finish fourth in a race that has produced a few subsequent winners. A jumpers’ bumper was never going to play to his strengths but he got back on the right track at Ffos Las last time, finishing third in testing conditions, once again hinting that he was capable of better, and he looks to be on a fair mark as he returns to handicap company.

Emperor’s Choice was perhaps a bit of a slow learner earlier in his career, but he has really got the hang of things lately, looking like a much better chaser than hurdler, and he can take another step forward in the 16:10 at Lingfield. Venetia Williams’ charge will have to defy a penalty if he is to complete the hat-trick, but he has given the strong impression that a real test of stamina is what he requires and he will surely get that today, racing over three and a half miles in heavy ground. Emperor’s Choice faces some interesting rivals here, notably Monsieur Cadou and Camden, but he should relish today’s test and is capable of notching another win.

Back Ciceron @ 2.74 in the 14:20 at Bangor
Back Tothemoonandback @ 3.6 in the 15:40 at Lingfield

Jewel Star shaped well when fourth of 18 to Beabus Jack in a maiden at Killarney on her hurdling debut in July, patiently ridden and keeping on well despite not being knocked about. She has been given plenty of time since that outing and, while that may be a concern to some, Jewel Star represents a yard more than capable of readying one after an absence and looks to have been found a winnable race on her return to the track.

Follow The Sign didn’t show much in a pair of bumpers, but he has shaped promisingly when placed on both starts over hurdles, first when third to Way Up In The Air at Punchestown and then when chasing home Rolly Baby at Thurles earlier this month. He showed enough ability in those two outings to suggest he can win a maiden and, with the possibility of more to come now stepped up in trip, he looks sure to make a bold bid.

Indubitably is a long-standing maiden over hurdles, but he has proven himself capable of fair form in this sphere and proved he still retains a decent portion of that ability when third to Kai Li at Ballinrobe in September. It would be fair to say that his three outings since that effort have been particularly poor, but Indubitably starts life out for a new yard this afternoon off a fair-looking mark and, with the step back up in trip expected to suit, he looks supporting this afternoon.

Bobby Dove in the 17f handicap chase for novices at 16:50. Bobby Dove is a son of 1994 Champion Hurdle winner Flakey Dove, and like most from that renowned damline, races in the red and yellow colours of the Price family. He showed little in his early starts, but has improved over fences of late, and caught my eye when attempting to give Denali Highway a race at Leicester in December. He duly built on that promise when winning next time, and was rather unlucky not to follow up at Ludlow a week ago, looking sure to overhaul Oranger when a last-fence error saw him lose vital momentum. His jumping remains a minor worry, but the fences at Bangor are more forgiving than most, and this looks a weaker contest.

Tara Rose was suited by the run of the race when giving an idling Violin Davis a scare here last time, and may be flattered by that bare form, especially with the drop in trip a slight negative, and the main danger looks to be Victor Dartnall’s Starsky des Mottes, who is gradually progressive, and ran his best race when second at Uttoxeter last time. A 5 lb rise for that defeat looks enough, though, and Bobby Dove looks the clear pick of the weights.

    BETFAIR Q&A with Paul Nicholls
    ——————————-

On Monday evening, master trainer Paul Nicholls took over the @BetfairRacingTwitter feed for an in-depth question and answer session ahead of Cheltenham. Here are some of the highlights

If you could only take three of your horses to Cheltenham, which ones would you choose?
    Zarkandar, Conti and Far West.

How do you rate Dodging Bullets’ chances?
I think he has a great each way chance. Would like to see it not too soft. He’s in great form.

Do you think Rocky Creek is a Gold Cup horse for next year?
Yes, if he wins the Hennessy!

If you could train any other horse other than your own running at the Festival, who would it be?
    Easy, Sprinter Sacre.

You swerved Cheltenham with Silvianco Conti last year saying the track wouldn’t suit. What’s changed?
We only missed Cheltenham because he was coughing after Ascot and I wanted him right for Aintree.

What do you rate as your best outside squeak at the festival?
    Hawkes Point in the four-miler.

Which Irish horse do you most fear this year? SirDesChamp?
    Hurricane Fly.

Will you have Zarkandar ridden differently, in the sense he will be up with the pace and not held up?
All three runs this year he has been on the pace. So why change a winning formula? Daryl knows him well.

What is your best handicapped horse at the Festival?
I’m hoping Sam Winner in the Pertemps. And a few others I hope.

If you had Tidal Bay five years earlier, do you think he could have mixed it with the likes of Kauto and Denman?
    On current form? Yes.

After training a National winner and multiple Gold Cup winners, what is next on the ‘to do list’?
    Do it again!

Apart from the ‘big four’ at the festival which other race would you especially like to win?
One day I would like to win the bumper.

Do you think Silvinaco Conti has improved as much as Bob’s Worth has since they last met?
Yes and I hope we get the same result again!

What horse, who has a realistic chance at Cheltenham, has surprised you the most this season?
    Unioniste.

With no Big Bucks who do you fancy for the World Hurdle?
    Oscar Whisky.

What are your race day superstitions?
If I’m on a winning roll, I wear the same shirt and tie.

If you could go back and train a horse you’ve had differently, which horse and what would you do differently?
I wouldn’t have run Master Minded in last years King George.

Who do you fear in the Gold Cup?
Bob’s Worth and Sire Des Champs.

If you were given £100 what one of your horses would you back?
As of today, I would have £50 each way on Tricky Trickster in the Fox Hunters at 20/1.

Paul, if you could train a winner in the Derby or Gold Cup which would you prefer?
    Gold Cup

Who do you fear most in the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham?
On form, Rolling Star and Our Conor.

Is there more or less pressure going into Spring Festivals without Kauto, Denman, Big Bucks and Master Minded?
Definitely a lot less pressure, but I know what I would rather!

What is your best chance of a Grand National winner this year?
    Join Together.

    Your tip for the Arkle?
    Overturn.

Which Irish horse would you like to have at Ditcheat?
    Flemenstar.

Will Tidal Bay carry on next season?
Yes hopefully starting off in the hurdle race at Wetherby again.

And possibly the most important question of the lot…

Should you keep tomato sauce in the fridge or the cupboard?
    Fridge!

Milesey, my first Cheltenham started with a champagne breakfast at Paddy Power‘s London office, then pints of black velvet on the 2-hour or so coach to the track. I was pissed when I got there but soon sobered up in the Guinness tent! Finished with a night out in London and I don’t know how I got up at 6am the next day to catch an early flight back to Glasgow.

    • Milesey 11 years ago

ha ha, I have betfair hospitality, so the champagne will be flowing, nice 3 course meal, box to watch the races, but i’ll probably go and mix it in the stands with my fellow punters, and get my bets on, have alook round the parade ring, see what fit girl is leading which horse ;) ;)

    • Guido 11 years ago

Milesey I watched a bit of the stream of the last match against Emelec and they won 1-0, fairly uneventful match/Penarol in control if not dominate. Cooda lost a goal near the end/widda been their own fault for not closing it out/sat on it a bit. Hmm..dunno Velez are a good Argentinian team/they and Lanus Id say are the top pair at mo..Velez cant really afford to lose tonight Milesey (can they ever?)Widna like to call it. If pushed I wid maybe go Velez double chance/draw no bet. Think it could be stalemate/would maybe suit both? the Uruguay?Argentinin thing as well? close neighbours/don’t dislike each other?

    anyone into placepots ?

    For Kempton tonight
    ———————–

17:30 – underway with a competitive handicap over a mile and a quarter but, for now at least, there are eight set to go to post which gives us three places to aim at. The first one we want on side is Noguchi who has been in top form of late, including at this venue the last twice, and makes plenty of appeal with the talented apprentice Robert Tart now taking over in the saddle and it is also worth sticking in Hilali, who has scored twice over hurdles since last being seen on the level and ought to be suited by this distance judged upon a couple of efforts earlier in his career.

18:00 – A non-runner in this leg has reduced this field to seven, which is annoying, but we will stick to our guns and bank on the thrice-raced Desert Donkey, who has made steady progress in maidens and looks to have been granted a lenient opening handicap mark.

18:30 – Sandstormers entrant Haywain has taken a while to get his act together but has done better since being fitted with blinkers on his two most recent starts; the drop to seven furlongs last time didn’t look an obvious move but he improved for it, actually shaping as if sprinting may be his game, and he is certainly worth a go at the six furlongs faced tonight. Dishy Guru, who shaped as if in need of the run on return from a break last time in a race that has thrown up three subsequent winners, looks to be flying under the radar in the market at present but he is very well handicapped and can provide us with a spot of insurance here.

19:00 – Flamborough Breeze is bidding to land a C&D hat-trick and is likely to be an obvious banker for many, however the best play may be to oppose her with one who seems just as likely to make the places in the hope that the favourite misses out. The one selected is Pastoral Jet, a five-year-old who is pretty consistent and managed to produce his best effort yet when narrowly denied over C&D last month.

19:30 – could realistically select bankers in the final two legs but we haven’t burnt all that many lines up to this point so we’re going to take two in each. Tanawar and Spring Tonic make the cut here, the former a steadily progressive William Haggas-trained three-year-old and the latter a four-year-old who was bought out of Luca Cumani’s yard by his new connections, has been gelded since last seen and boasts a decent piece of form at this venue in September.

20:00 – Gabrial’s Wawa sets the standard but that level is not insurmountable so we will take him on with both Red To Amber and Vastly. The first mentioned could prove to be a different proposition with his debut experience, where he was too green to do himself justice, under his belt and he seems sure to go close, but it is also worth taking a bit of a flyer on Vastly, who boasts a taking middle-distance pedigree with the high-class Await The Dawn among his siblings and he is of interest despite being sold for just 8,000 gns last year and making a relatively late start to his career.

    Selections:
    17:30 – 3, 4
    18:00 – 5
    18:30 – 8, 11
    19:00 – 13
    19:30 – 2, 8
    20:00 – 1, 6

Nah I am convinced HOME RUN will win this and its going in my lucky 15 … if anything the only other horse I am worried about in that race is SUERTE AL SALTO.

Velez won 1-0, seems it was a tight game with both teams with similar number of shots on and off target, but Velez got the one that counted.

There are a record number of entries for the 11 handicaps at this year’s Festival and today the weights for those races were revealed…

Irish champion trainer Willie Mullins boasts a formidable team for The Festival and he accounts for the joint or sole top-weight in five of the 11 handicaps including Uncle Junior in the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase.

Following his victory in the Racing Plus Chase on Saturday, Opening Batsman would have to shoulder 12st 6 lb if he was to take up his engagement in the Pulteney Land Investments Novices’ Handicap Chase or 12st 1 lb if running in the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Handicap Chase.

The David Pipe-trained Ballynagour, a facile winner on his British debut at Warwick last week, is now rated 148p by Timeform and has six possible targets at Cheltenham.

His Festival options are the JLT Specialty Handicap Chase, in which he has been allotted 11 stone, Coral Cup (10st 11 lb), Byrne Group Plate (10st 7 lb), Vincent O’Brien County Handicap Hurdle (10st 10 lb), Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle (11st 10 lb) and Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Handicap Chase (10st 7 lb).

Meanwhile, it will take a high weight to be one of the 24 to make the cut for the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle with 37 entries on 11st 6lb or above.

    HORSE RACING TIPS

    THURSDAY 28TH FEBRUARY 2013
    —————————-
    —————————-

    LUDLOW 4.00
    BIG SOCIETY 3.00
Interesting horse, been doing well in novice company and takes the step up today to a handicap. Always performs very well, and looks like it has been slipped into handicap company today in a field were it is very capable of making a winning handicap debut.

    TAUNTON 2.10
    NO TO TRIDENT 4.7
Last run out after a lengthy lay off would have done this horse wonders, performed so well on his return, and can keep that upward spiral going today, as i expect this horse just to get better and better.

    TAUNTON 2.40
    GARRYLEIGH 2.68

    TAUNTON 3.40
    JUPITER REX ? 1.33 ( NAP )
Question mark for was only out on monday. Same reasons as then and it won that day with a novice on board, AIDAN COLEMAN on board today. Going for a 5 timer today.

    TAUNTON 4.10
    THUNDERSTORM 1.52 ( NAP )
Everyone that reads my selections should know all about this one, last time out AP won on it so easy without even pushing it, just had a glance round, lit his cigar and just sat back and cruised it. This horse has not been needed to be driven out, but should it need to happen then the McCoy drive will pull this one clear.

    SOUTHWELL 2.20
    KABBAAS
Based on the last run, and only a slight weight rise today for that win, expect this one today to get the better of APACHE RISING.
    1ST KABBAAS 1.43
    2ND APACHE RISING 4.8

    SOUTHWELL 3.20
This is a very interesting race, i wanted to side with Lucies Diamond 2.2, won well last April in it’s first race, but has been off track since, looked a really nice horse that day with plenty of potential, have no idea why it has been off track so long, and today over 5f it has to be at it’s very best for any rustiness and this horse is just going to get blown off the track. La Slyphe is another who was a great horse at Southwell, but at other tracks while Southwell was under water has seemed to have lost all form.
So for this race i am siding with MIAKO 2.26, Trainer is 7 out of 7 at southwell, and this horse has plenty of potential and it’s best days are ahead, so i fully expect it to take the win today.

    THURLES 2.55
    LAMBRO 1.78

    THURLES 3.55
    TOUCH THE EDEN 2.2

Two in Ireland today for WALSH and MULLINS hard to quite know what to do with these, Back to Lay in running is a possibility. Trying to work out how to play these runners today, Is it a winning Double ? are they both lays for today, nothing to do with horse form, trainer etc… Just not sure how they are going to be riden today, maybe a case of watch the market and try to work out the best way to play.

    ————————————–
    MEYDAN PICKS

The 15:20 is a competitive sprint with a couple dropping in grade but Justineo looks the interesting one now he is back at 6f. He’s clearly not the easiest to win with having just the maiden success to his name, but he’s spent much of his career punching above his weight so perhaps that shouldn’t be held against him. His best run last year came over this trip when third to Eton Rifles in a listed contest at Doncaster and whilst arguably on a stiff enough mark as a result of that run, he has shaped as though he can close off it in two starts at Meydan this year. Both those runs came at 7f, doing too much too soon on each occasion, but he travelled better than most when fifth to Time Prisoner last time and from a good draw in stall 2, he will hopefully be in the perfect position throughout.

Sajjhaa franked the form of the Cape Verdi when landing the Balanchine last week but Amanee could easily have beaten her in the former had she had some luck and Mike de Kock’s charge can atone for that defeat in the 16:30. Amanee was a Group 2 winner last year and, like so many from the yard, built significantly on her reappearance when second to Sajjhaa last time, beaten to a gap at a crucial stage by the winner and having little time to recover. It would come as no surprise if she were to go on again from that and assuming she handles this different surface, she should take plenty of beating.

Dhruba Selveratnam is good for producing at least one big-priced winner each Carnival and hopefully his Jaasoos can do the business in the 17:40. It’s been a lean season for Selveratnam with just four wins to his name, but two of those came at Jebel Ali last weekend and the stable as a whole do seem in much better form. Jaasoos typified that with a promising effort last time, only eighth to Time Prisoner but he was badly hampered in a messy race and could easily have threatened the first four had he got a clean run through. He’s slowly edging back down the weights and it was only 12 months ago he was finishing second to Delegator off a mark of 110, and he wouldn’t need to replicate that fully to make an impact here.

    Back Justineo in the 15:20
    Back Amanee in the 16:30
Back Jaasoos win and place in the 17:40
