HENDERSON won the Arkle last year with the brilliant Sprinter Sacre and he has the outstanding contender again in Simonsig writes Milesey. The seven-year-old has won the Neptune at Cheltenham last season and after a good start to his chasing career he is the hot favourite here. Overturn has finished runner-up in last year’s Champion Hurdle and has won all his three races over the bigger obstacles. While none of these wins was in a highly rated race, the manner in which he won them caught punters’ attention, as he decimated the field by 25 lengths in Doncaster before winning by an astonishing 29 lengths at Musselburgh. Arvika Ligeonniere (trained by Willie Mullins) has returned from more than two years off the track to win his three completed races over fences, making all the running each time, before falling on his latest outing at Leopardstown. As a recent faller we’re skeptical of his prospects in this race.

Captain Conan looks an interesting option in this field. He was the winner in the Arkle Trophy Trial at Cheltenham in November. He’s since won another two races, and is unbeaten over fences. Anyway, we think that Captain Conan will run the Jewson Novices’ Chase.

Benefficient won the Irish Arkle in January, in which Arvika Ligeonniere fell, getting the better of smart Oscars Well when that rival also made a bad error at the last fence.

A long shot might be Majala, unbeaten this season for Tom George and always improving during the last 3 months.

Racing Post Arkle Challenge Trophy Chase

Speed ratings do little to make the market for this one any clearer, our test returning the top three in the market of Simonsig, Overturn and Arvika Ligeonniere. And given that they have all shown strong form at the Festival, we’re not much closer to an answer. If I was forced to bet, I’d take Simonsig, as Overturn is not guaranteed to be at his best on the ground, and Arvika Ligeonniere has seemed a little chancy with his jumping.

We are on the look out for a future star of sprint chasing. Recent Arkle winners Sizing Europe, Voy Per Ustedes, Moscow Flyer, Azertyuiop, Flagship Uberalles and Klairon Davis have all gone on to win the Queen Mother Champion Chase.

    Arkle Chase Trends

10/10 returned an SP no bigger than 9/1
10/10 had no more than five races over fences
9/10 finished in first two in all completed starts over fences
9/10 rated at least 142 over hurdles
9/10 were aged between five and seven(only two winners aged eight or over since 1960!)
9/10 had final prep race within 52 days of the Festival
9/10 finished in first two last time out

    Arkle Trends Analysis
The trend to focus on here is the 142 rating over hurdles. Not that many horses rated 142+ over hurdles will go over fences and if they meet the age requirement they could well be worth considering.

    Arkle Preview
We advised backing Sprinter Sacre at a tasty 7/1 early in the season last year and he delivered the goods in spectacular style.

Sprinter Sacre’s stablemate Simonsig is a very warm order to take this year’s Arkle but there is little incentive for punters with him being odds on so its worth taking him on each-way with a selection at big odds or perhaps backing something in the without the favourite market.

    Arkle Tips
Simonsig is the most likely winner but the second and third favourites look well worth opposing in my view so there may be some value in the without Simonsig market.

Lucinda Russell’s TAP NIGHT is a surprise entry for this race and is probably unlikely to trouble Simonsig but will definitely be suited to the likely fast pace and coud finish second or third.

Bet Victor have gone 20/1 TAP NIGHT in their without Simonsig market and that looks way too big.
