After suffering a disappointing defeat to Rennes in their previous French Ligue 1 fixture, Lyon will be targeting a swift return to winning ways. They host an erratic Marseille team on Sunday and will fancy their chances of claiming all the points.

Lyon suffered a disappointing 4-1 defeat to Rennes in their last Ligue 1 fixture before the international break. They were surprisingly no match for the hosts, going four goals down before Lucas Paqueta struck a late consolation.

Manager Peter Bosz will consider the result a setback for his team, who were looking to make a push for the European places. As it stands, they are seventh on the table, four points behind Rennes in the final continental slot.

It is not all doom and gloom for Lyon, who have remained unbeaten on home soil across all competitions this season. They have won four of their last five home matches in Ligue 1, claiming victories over Monaco and Lens in their last two.

Marseille travel to Lyon off the back of a 0-0 home draw with Metz in their previous Ligue 1 fixture. They played much of the second half against 10 men but failed to find the breakthrough and were guilty of missing numerous chances.

While there is still plenty room for improvement, manager Jorge Sampaoli will be reasonably pleased with Marseille’s start to the season. They have suffered just two defeats in 13 matches and are currently fourth on the table, just one point behind Lens in second place.

One area that needs improvement for Marseille is their ruthlessness in front of goal as they often struggle to see out results. That problem has seen them claim just one win in their last six matches across all competitions with the remaining five ending in draws.

How the bookies view it

The bookies have installed Lyon as favourites with a home win priced at 28/29 with Vbet. A victory for Marseille is valued at 14/5 by William Hill while a draw is set at odds of 3/1 with betway.

Head to head

Lyon have a 24-12 advantage with 20 draws from 56 previous matches against Marseille. The last two meetings have ended in 1-1 draws, although Lyon have won four of the last five fixtures at Groupama Stadium.

Players to watch

Karl Toko Ekambi remains the shining light for Lyon and has found the net three times in his last four Ligue 1 matches. Paddy Power has the Cameroon striker at 13/8 to score anytime on Sunday.

Although they have looked unconvincing in attack lately, Marseille are still dangerous going forward, particularly with Dimitri Payet and Cengiz Under, who have combined for nine goals. Unibet has Payet at 14/5 to score anytime while also offering 4/1 on Under in the same market.

Anything else catch the eye?

Lyon have seen over 3.5 goals in two of their last three Ligue 1 matches and Sunday’s clash could be tipped to produce a similar outcome at 6/4 Unibet. Both teams have scored in the first half in their last two meetings and that run is likely to continue at 11/4 with bet365.

All the goals have come before the break in the last two matches between Lyon and Marseille so the first half can be picked as the highest scoring half at 11/5 with BoyleSports.
