THE race for the title in the SPFL Championship is fascinating this season with Greenock Morton just three points behind Ayr and Inverness Caledonian Thistle at the summit – even though they currently sit in sixth place.

A haul of 10 points from the last four games has fired the Cappielow side into the hunt for automatic promotion and they can move level with Billy Dodds' men with a victory here.

Dougie Imrie transformed Morton after taking charge midway through last season with the club facing a battle against the drop. He has made them a hard team to beat and if they can keep up this kind of form, Ton could be dark horses for promotion.

Caley Thistle were my pre-season tip for the title after adding to the squad that reached the play-off final last term. Things were looking good when a run of five successive victories had them flying high a fortnight ago but Inverness have taken just a point from their last two games.

That's mainly down to a growing injury list, with Robbie Deas the latest casualty after suffering a broken leg, and Dodds will be hoping he has some players back for this tricky road trip.

The goals have dried up for Inverness, with just four scored in their last five games, and they need their hitmen to start firing again to stay in the hunt for the title.

How the bookies view it

Greenock Morton's impressive form makes them favourites for this one at 11/8 with Unibet and I'll be having a nibble at that price with Inverness having a lot of players out. Caley Thistle's best price is 21/10 at Betway while the draw pays 11/5 at QuinnBet.

Recent head to head

These sides faced off six times in the league and cup last season and Inverness Caledonian Thistle held the edge, with three wins and just one defeat. But it was Morton who came out on top in their first meeting this term, winning 1-0 in the Highlands thanks to a late Grant Gillespie penalty.

Players to watch

Robbie Muirhead has failed to deliver on the early potential he showed at Kilmarnock but remains a talented player. He has netted five times this season and the striker is 13/5 with Bet365 for anytime scorer.

Billy Mckay has gone three games without a goal for Inverness and that suggests he's due a return to form. The experienced striker has also netted five times this term and is 5/2 with SkyBet to add to that tally.

Anything else catch the eye?

Betting against a lack of goals in Morton's last match paid off for me on a great weekend of lower-league punting when all my main tips came up. It's hard not to go for a repeat in this one, with only six goals scored in the last five matches involving Inverness.

BTTS failed to land in four of those games and it has been a similar story for Morton with that bet not coming up in their last three. So it's tempting to bet against BTTS in this one at evens with BetVictor while under 2.5 goals is shorter at a best 8/11 with SpreadEx.

The last three meetings have ended in a 1-0 scoreline so it could pay to back a repeat, with a 1-0 Morton win priced 7/1 by BoyleSports and Bet365 offering 17/2 on the same score in Caley Thistle's favour.

The half-time draw came up for me when Inverness drew with Raith at the weekend and it stands a chance again here at 21/20 with McBookie.
