DUNDEE UNITED have one foot in the play-off final after a controversial midweek win in the Highlands.

I fancied the first leg to end in a stalemate, as 18 other Inverness matches have this season, and it looked to be on the cards in a game of few chances.

But Liam Polworth's contentious sending-off early in the second half proved pivotal and United eventually took advantage of their extra man to grab a priceless winner.

Inverness boss John Robertson was furious with referee Nick Walsh over Polworth's dismissal, claiming the whistler wanted to be the “star of the show”.

And it was easy to understand why he was so frustrated as the decision not only changed the first leg but also robbed him of his best midfielder for the Tannadice return. With Polworth heading to Motherwell next season, he won't feature for Caley Thistle again unless his team-mates manage to turn this around with him.

Carl Tremarco, Tom Walsh and Sean Welsh all missed the first leg through injury and Robertson looks set to be without them again. United should be at full strength again after emerging unscathed from their Highland trek.

It's hard to see this tired Inverness side summoning up a comeback but United don't offer much value at a 4/5 with most firms. Instead, try backing a home win with a clean sheet, which is 2/1 with McBookie.

Under 2.5 goals came up for me in the first leg and I can't see there being too many thrills in this one either. Ladbrokes are offering 5/4 on a combination of under 1.5 goals in the first half, under 2.5 strikes in the second half and either team to win. That looks a great option and I'll be sticking a few quid on that.

I flagged up Paul McMullan as the biggest threat for Robbie Neilson's side in the first leg and he duly delivered with a late goal that has made United massive 1/10 favourites with McBookie to reach the final. Boss Neilson praised the winger for his display, claiming the fact he came off with cramp showed how much effort he had put in.

He also talked up striker Nicky Clark's impact off the bench and his performance might be enough to earn him a start for the return. Clark is 16/5 with McBookie to break the deadlock but play safer and back him at evens for anytime scorer with the same firm as he might start on the bench again.
