BRIGHTON and Newcastle United both got off to excellent starts last week with opening day wins in the Premier League, but something has to give on Saturday when they meet at the AMEX.

The Seagulls had the most eye-catching result of the weekend. But the scale of their achievement by winning 2-1 at Manchester United was almost entirely overshadowed by the tsunami of criticism that swept towards United and their new boss Erik ten Hag.

But Brighton were well worth it and have been tipped by many pundits to push for a European spot this season. Manager Graham Potter has only brought in four players during the summer, although they did lose Marc Cucurella and Yves Bissouma which brought in almost £100 million. They are a club heading in the right direction.

Newcastle were too good for newly-promoted Nottingham Forest last week, but traditionally, United aren't great travellers and a long trip to the south coast will be a big test of their credentials this season under Eddie Howe.

United won only five league games away from St James' Park out of 19 last season, but curiously, Brighton were far better on the road than at home – they were 16th in the home league form.

And this should give an early indication of how these clubs will fare this season.

How the bookies view it

Brighton are 6/4 favourites at SBK and Newcastle can be backed at 41/20 with UniBet. The draw is 9/4 with William Hill.

Recent head to heads

The clubs fought out a 1-1 draw at the AMEX last season as can be seen below. Newcastle won the corresponding fixture 2-1 in Tyneside.

Players to watch

A first-half brace from German midfielder Pascal Gross won the match at Old Trafford for Brighton last week and all eyes will be on him again surely this week. He is a generous 15/2 to score just once this week with bet365.

Once again Callum Wilson showed last week that when fit, he will score, when he netted against Forest. He is 23/10 to net in Brighton with SportNation.

Anything else catch the eye?

Both sides are good going forward and like to attack. They should both be in the top half of the table and the call here is for them to remain unbeaten in a draw at 9/4 with Hills.

On the same path, with goals expected at both ends, try bet365's 7/5 on both teams to score and over 2.5 goals – six of Brighton's last seven games have been over 2.5 goals.
