FOLLOWING last week's Masterclass about spread betting on football I've received a couple of emails enquiring about how to bet on a team's “Supremacy”. It's a phrase you may have heard of and if you grasped the concept of last week's spread betting on goals article you'll be able to pick this one up quickly too.
The Supremacy spread bet is one of the most popular markets for those interested in football spread betting. Simply put you're betting on the number of goals a team will win by. The price, or spread, will indicate which team is being placed as favourite over the other.
How it works – Buying a team's supremacy
Spreadex may predict Manchester United will beat Arsenal and quote United with a Supremacy price of 0.6 – 0.8. You agree so you ‘buy' United's supremacy at 0.8.
Scenario A – Man Utd win 4-1
If Manchester United beat team Arsenal 4-1 the Supremacy price will make-up at 3 (4 – 1 = 3). So a £10 buy at 0.8 in this instance will result in a £22 profit ((3 – 0.8) x £10 = £22).
Scenario B – Arsenal win 1-0
However, the market can also have a negative make-up. So if Arsenal beat Manchester United 1-0, the Supremacy price will make-up at -1 (0 – 1 = -1). So the £10 buy at 0.8 would result in an £18 loss ((-1 – 0.8) x £10 = -£18).
Selling a team's supremacy
Alternatively, you may think that Arsenal will win, therefore you ‘sell' United's supremacy at 0.6.
Scenario A – Arsenal win 3-0
If Arsenal win by three goals to nil the Supremacy price will make up at 3 (3-0). So a £10 sell at 0.6 will result in a £36 profit ((3+0.6) x £10 = £36).
Scenario B – Man Utd win 1-0
However, this market can also have a negative make-up. So if Manchester United 1-0 beat Arsenal, the Supremacy price will make-up at -1 (0 – 1 = -1). So the £10 sell at 0.6 would result in an £4 loss ((0.6 – 1) x £10 = -£4).
Supremacy football spread bets markets are also offered on other aspects of the game, for example, Corner Supremacy, Bookings Supremacy, Total Goal Minutes Supremacy, Team Performance Supremacy and I'll cover some of these in future Masterclasses.
