BETTING really is a funny old game. I've lost 6pts on my football tips in the last two days but cashed in at Cheltenham.

Everyone here knows I don't bet horses but I make an exception for Cheltenham and over the last three days I've landed seven or eight winners and a couple of places.

I've done that by reading the likes of Johnb and Voice of Value's tips but also by picking a couple of my own from doing some research.

On Thursday I spent a great day down there courtesy of Ladbrokes and the horses weren't the only ones with long faces as bookies took a bashing. I'm pleased to say I was one of many on the treble of Vautour, Thistlecrack and Limini and it was nice to see bookies taking it on the chin.

I'm back to concentrate on the football and I can't recommend much for Friday as I concentrate on writing my Saturday Daily Record columns.

In Scotland the big game is Falkirk v Rangers in the |Championship and the Bairns are now the Ibrox side's nearest title challengers.

Nearest is the wrong word though because they are a distant 14 points behind and in reality fighting with Hibs for second spot.

The Bairns usually make it tough for Mark Warburton's men but the Ibrox side have been in good form and I'm taking them to win although finding value is difficult as they are no bigger than 4-7 with bet365.

I thought about Gers to score 2+ but that returns just 6-10 so what about Kenny Miller at 7-2 with McBookie to score first.

Morton netted at Ibrox last Friday and Falkirk could score having done so two out of three times this season and in the last three meetings at home.

The Bairns to score pays 8-15 at Ladbrokes while both teams to net is a best 8-11 at bet365.

There is a big game in the English Championship with Middlesbrough tackling Hull. Boro were beaten 2-0 at Charlton with boss Aitor Karanka absent after a row.

The Spaniard will be back in the dugout and the sides could cancel each other out. I'm on under 2.5 goals at 5-4 with McBookie and Ladbrokes.

On the continent I'm expecting goals when Marseille entertain Rennes – although not from Steven Fletcher. The on-loan Sunderland striker has struggled to make an impact on Ligue One and is unlikely to start.

Rennes' last four matches have averaged four a game and over 3.5 pays 11-4 at William Hill. Go safer with over 2.5 at 21-20 with bet365 or both teams to score at 19-20 with bet365.

As far as Cheltenham goes I might put up a tip. I sat with some racing experts yesterday and like Johnb the one that seems to be fancied most for the Gold Cup is Don Poli with Barter's Hill liked in the 2.50.

Well I’m on the Spanish/German double anyway for 1.5pts. Think both games could be BTTS but stuck with the above.

    Mr F,Jordan,Greg & all others.
Im waiting on Nimes to score over 1.5 team goals for £258 tomorrow,
    could cover @ 8/11.
Whats the chances on the 2 goals im looking for,any advice much appreciated :)

    • Mr Fixit 8 years ago

nazulus, just back from Cheltenham and don’t know if I’ll get time to look at Ligue 2 games.
Greg may have some advice as that’s one of his favourite leagues.

    • nazalus 8 years ago

Thanks Mr F,hopefully Greg see’s my post.Hope you had some winners down Cheltenham way :) :)

    • Mr Fixit 8 years ago

nazalus, I think nearly everyone had winners – especially today.

How much you stick on @nazalus

    • ooseven 8 years ago

Stats look to say it’s a decent chance but that depends if you are a stats guy or not! Don’t think anyone would be surprised if they score 2 but those games at the lower end of the lower leagues can often go one of 2 ways…. goals galore or snoooooooooz. At 8/11 for cover depends on original stake I suppose but would be a whole lot easier to follow if you know you are at least winning something!

Right, ive decided im going to wait, and hope Nimes score early on & then stick the 58 on Under 1.5tg,should get decent odds if they have 1 goal already…….DECISION MADE !!!!!!!!!

Apologies for my lack of input this past 10 days or so with regards my beloved Derby who seemed to be making some sort of progress in the way of form then go and blow a 3 goal lead away to Rotherham in the last 8 minutes of the game. That I’m afraid effectively kills off our automatic promotion hopes. It’s now about can we hang in there for playoff spot.

From the fans perspective, Saturdays early kick-off against our most hated rivals – Notts Forest. Discounting the last 2 matches they’ve faced us, Derby gave them the run around for the best part of 4 or 5 seasons, it was either a 4 point or 6 point gain over them season in season out, and then they decided to show up with some fight.

Forest have just shed their manager and Derby have acquired the services of Harry Rednapp – as technical director to assist our fulltime academy manager in trying to see if we have what it takes to stay within the top 6. My interpretation of that appointment is that its an ” audition ” for the vacant slot of the mangers job. Rednapps experience is vast, but I’ve never seen him turn a team around without him spending big. His last job at QPR had a team brimming with premiership quality and they literally stumbled over the line to steal the late goal against us at Wembley that sent them up. That QPR team never quite gelled together and most players seemed to be there just for the paycheck – hence they fell straight back out of the premiership the following season.

The last 2 times Derby have faced Forest, we’ve been toothless, no midfield pitch battles which seems to be part and parcel of the Derby/Forest. They’ve kicked us all over the pitch and although we have the players to get right in their faces, we’ve been far too standoffish and they’ve took the points.

Derby’s home form has not been bad, its much improved, but Forest’s league position tells the story on how they’re doing. Money has been dropping on Derby this past week for the home win and its down from about 4/5 to around 8/15. That’s quite a drop. Without Harry Rednapp’s input, I think we’ll edge it – BUT and theres a big BUT, our midfield are going to have to battle. This equals cards.
Usually this match is a vicious affair and quite often see’s a red produced – around 60% of them to a red shirt. Yellows and reds have been distinctly lacking this past two meets, in fact Derby have been quite low on cards all the way through this season, maybe its good discipline, but at the expense of dropping points?? That’s where our season is struggling.

This is a must win game for Derby, not just for the bragging rights but for the feelgood factor to return to see us into the last run of games to top off this season. Tomorrows early kickoff ( on Sky ) is possibly overshadowed by tonights game between Borough and Hull ( I fancy a Hull win if I’m honest ).
One thing is for certain ( here’s the BUT ) – The Derby win will only come if we show our teeth, so anyone considering betting on Derby has to consider doubling it up with an overs cards, hopefully the bookies will set the line in the sand at 3.5 cards.

Once again, apologies to the site members for my lack of input into this site this past 10 days or so, but I hope to be back to my normal self in plenty of time from tomorrow am for this huge game for us. I shall use this next 24hrs to take a good peek at the match official stats and see if I can get a sniff at who is likely to be lining up and who’s injured etc.

    • nathanufton 8 years ago

Keith Stroud is the man in black for this tie and if I’m honest, the last 3 or 4 times we’ve met – and then some, we’ve had an inexperienced ref who’s often bottled it on big decisions, or an inexperienced ref that’s had a flurry of controversial issues to deal with and usually got them wrong ( Martin Atkinson disallowing a Derby goal in injurytime, opting instead to award a penalty – yet not sending off the player – then watching Derby score the penalty – then making them retake it, then watching the retake being saved ) – Some ref’s just want to be the centre of the attention. Its good to see the FA finally see this juicy tie and send down an appropriate ref.

Keith Stroud likes his cards, I’ve seen the stats, can’t remember offhand exactly what they were but around 150 yellows and 11 reds in 30 something matches.

I think also the last time he ref’d a game for the Rams was in November when we beat QPR 1 nil. That game had 8 yellows and a QPR red.

His appointment to this game re-installs my confidence that this game will see cards, lots of them.

    • andynffc 8 years ago

Gave them the run around for the last 4-5 seasons check the stats before coming out with rubbish…. Also when you have your best players out injured ( again typical for this match also) and you are under an embargo and can’t spend a penny yet you can spend 27m and still can’t achieve anything wouldn’t be to cocky. You haven’t beat us for the last 3 times we have played you and we won the last 2. Check the head to head stats before coming out with shite…

    • nathanufton 8 years ago

I have/do check stats, you beat us the last 2 times and both those games were very shy on cards. Forests ground used to be a nightmare to go to, I think you were unbeaten in 30 odd years, then we had a run that I believe started the year you came back into the championship. You’ve had one decent result against us in the last 10 years or so, I recall rob earnshaw – who couldn’t hit a barn door with a shotgun got a couple, think it ended 5-2.

Before you start moaning, take a look at where the money is going – the price drop is the clue. As for the cards, again, check the stats. I also pointed out quite clearly that for Derby to win, they need to show some teeth in midfield – that equals cards.
Its Forest’s form in general which is the reason behind my belief they’ll lose this tie, not Derby’s form.

I don’t use this as a platform to bitch about rival teams, we all know the history, I put my thoughts down about 99% of matches and attempt to steer people towards where they should be looking to put their money to give us all a chance of making a few quid off the bookies.
You are entitled to your opinion, if you don’t agree with mine, then fine, choose another bet.

Incidentally, rivalry aside, a season back when Leeds played at Derby, a local Leeds fan took my -1 straight handicap and overs cards ( yes he bet against his team ) he made a good £50 that day and offered to buy me a few beers in their allocated away team pub – that used to be my local. When it comes to football rivalry, so be it, but I’m here to attempt to help people to take cash out of the bookies pockets and put it in ours.

    • andynffc 8 years ago

The Notts forest and the florest comment last week does prove you bitch about your rivals…… I expect you to win tomorrow you should do under the conditions of both teams. But please don’t bring another dvd out its just embarrassing …..

Barcelona To Qualify (vs Atletico Madrid – Champions League)
Borussia Dortmund To Qualify (vs Liverpool – Europa League)

I have these two winning the Champions League and Europa League outright respectively and think its decent value for both to progress to the next round. Tougher tie for Barcelona for they’ve beaten Atletico twice this season in La Liga with the Madrid side scraping past PSV through a shootout.

Dortmund are the clear favourites to win the Europa League and although Spurs didn’t really go for it in either tie, I don’t think Liverpool will get much joy either. Klopp will obviously relish going against his former club, but they’ve changed a lot since he was in charge. Don’t think many will disagree with either of these assumptions.

Mr fixit or anyone what do you think about under 3.5 goals in the Falkirk – Rangers game tonight? Could it be a tight affair or goal galore?

    • Mr Fixit 8 years ago

harrybaines, if I had to pick between under 3.5 and over I’d go under but won’t be a great price.
These games can go either way – an early goal and it changes everything.

Anybody in the mls tonight I’ve got nyc to win on the last of a 5 fold, don’t know whether to cover for evens or let it run

    • kyle b 8 years ago

Ive got a few quid on David Villa Anytime @ 23/20 for interest. Expect both teams to score but New York are expected to pip the game. How much you talking on the 5 fold?

    • terrinico 8 years ago

£99.26 kyleb was hoping for early goal from NYc then cover. Villa should be a good shout mate

    • kyle b 8 years ago

My advice would be to watch the game and make a judgment call upon that , we might be in for another goalfest tonight. There is no such thing as a 0-0 when New York City are on the pitch. Best of luck mate

  80. HullShaker 8 years ago

Sometimes you’ve just got to whistle and move on.

It was looking great for the draw at 2/1 and 11/2 0-0 correct score as we hit the 91st minute between Boro and Hull.

Then up pops Nugent the inconsiderate bastard – lost me a fair few dubloons and climbs to the top of the shit-list in a matter of seconds ?.

Dundalk capitulated on their side of the BTTS bet so all in all it’s been as successful as a rusty penknife at a circumcision party.

Onwards though and it’s over to El Salvador for the Night Owl…

    UES VS. PASAQUINA (11.00 KO):

9th plays 10th here but it’s a tight league and 2 back to back wins could see teams travel from near bottom to top 4.

UES had a crap start but seem to be hitting some form of late with 3 wins out of the last 5 – they do tend to score at home.

Pasaquina manage to notch away from home and after they won the previous H2H 2-0 I think revenge nayvbe on the cards – BTTS has a great chance at 19/20 (2 points).

    Good luck.
