IT'S felt like a marathon at times but we've finally whittled Euro 2016 down to eight teams.

So starting on Thursday we're left with Poland v Portugal, Wales v Belgium, Germany v Italy and France v Iceland.

Iceland of course provided the biggest shock of the tournament by knocking out England but in many ways it wasn't that big a surprise.

I didn't have the balls to tip Iceland to win – I thought about it – but in the end reckoned England would do just enough before being sent home by France.

Roy Hodgson quit after the defeat and there was more bad news for England fans when bookies installed Under-21 boss Gareth Southgate as 8-1 favourite to succeed him. Gary Neville and Eddie Howe are 10-1.

France should end Iceland's hopes and while Belgium should see off Wales but that could go either way if Gareth Bale performs like he has.

The other two will need more studying. A penalty shoot-out may be needed to split Poland and Portugal unless Robert Lewandowski or Cristiano Ronaldo can spark their respective sides to life.

Italy were impressive in ending Spain's reign and will give tournament favourites Germany a right good game.

My Super Single double and speculative 9-1 double were losers and to complete a bad day Marcus Willis produced a stunning display at Wimbledon to bomb my tennis fivefold.

So while we have two-day break for the Euros it's the start of the Champions League and Europa League qualifiers. I'll have a look at the games and see if there's anything I can come up. Aberdeen and Hearts are in Europa League action on Thursday and hopefully progress – we've had enough Brexits for one week.

Tonight's Champions League ties include Flora Tallinn v Lincoln Red Imps with the winners facing Celtic and Welsh side TNS at home to Tre Penne Galazzano – and that sounds like a nice pasta dish.
San Marino side Tre Penne are as big as 55-1 with betfair so that tells you all you need to know. Over 3.5 match goals pays 4-6 and it's all that tempts me. Estonians Flora should win and the double pays 6-5 with Ladbrokes and McBookie.
Instead of backing that though I'm doing a tennis double as the Super Single.

This is the man that should get the England managers job but I bet they don’t even look at him even though Gareth Southgate did ask for his help with the u21s,
also he has just signed for Bayern Munich after time at Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid,
So after working with the worlds top egos, I am sure he could handle the egos of England players

    Paul Clement

    • the notorious 2 years ago

John great shout. I would like to see Blanc or Martinez personally. Its hard to believe Gareth Southgate is current favourite though. If the FA do appoint Southgate then England will flop again imo.

Johnb, problem with Clement is he’s had one managerial job in England and it didn’t go well.
Job is a poisoned chalice now so difficult to get a top guy in.

      • Johnb 2 years ago

I was surprised Derby got rid of him, from what I have heard, tactically he is good

Johnb, was sacked after a bad run. Nathanufton’s the one to answer whether he was tactically good there.

  4. HullShaker 2 years ago

    Morning gents,

Stroll on. If Gareth Southgate is the answer then you really have to be asking what the question is.

    I suppose he’s a shoe-in given the fact he’s already had his charisma-bypass operation.

Having a look at a couple of this evening’s games starting with the 1st leg CL Qualifiers and there’s a certain irony that it’s a visit to Wales but to be honest, I’m pasta caring*…

The New Saints know how to score; 12 times last season they scored 4 or more team goals; 4 games saw 5+ tgs; 2 saw 6+ tgs with 1 seeing 7 TNS goals.

Obviously there’s an element of guesswork here and I don’t claim to be famiar with Italian side Tre Penne but they too had a great campaign winning the Campionata fairly emphatically.

Stats suggest a side that play attacking football but are prone to concede: in 17 games last season they managed 3 or more team goals whilst 18 of their games saw both teams scoring.

Both sides have had a layoff for few weeks but hopefully neither team will have gone off the boil*

    Selections to consider:

    (2 Points)

    BTTS & OVER 3.5 MGS…16/5
    (2 Points)

    Good luck with all bets?

    * that was for you Mr F
    **sorry ?

    OVER 4.5 MGS

  5. waddo 2 years ago

    Morning all,

Luckily I’d stuck on England over 62.5% possession in last nights game, that was my saving grace after a terrible performance. Leroy – thanks for the heads up on that one bud. Good night for bookies, bad night for punters. Anyway, onto today’s matches…

    10:00AM – Vietnam Second Division

Ha Noi T&T II v Lam Dong

Played each other in April which ended 0-0, but since then both teams have been in the mix with goals…Ha Noi II’s last 4 matches have seen at least 4 goals scored in total. 4 from Lam Dong’s last 5 matches have seen 4 goals or more but generally more than that. Ha Noi II have scored 11 goals from their opening 4 home matches. Lam Dong have conceded 8 from 4. Good case for overs in this match.

    10:00AM – Australian NPL

SWQ Thunder v Brisbane Roar U21

3 from the 5 meetings between these two have seen 4 goals or more. 2 or Roar’s last 3 matches have gone overs and Thunder have seen 8 from their last 9 go overs – and generally more than 4 goals. Thunder have scored 12 but also conceded 12 in their opening 7 home games. Roar concede a fair amount away from home. Again, good case for overs again.

Going with a small stake on over 2.5 goals double on these two to start the day @ 1/1.

    Good luck all.

    • waddo 2 years ago

The Aussie game came in nae bother, but pathetic showing in Vietnam. Should have read more into that 0-0 in the last meeting. Sorry if you were aboard on this one.

Was a good night for me as my only antepost tip of Iceland to reach Quarter Finals @ 3/1 landed. Was posted some weeks ago obviously, no idea of where or when. Hope it softened the blow for some others too.

Hope you are all well otherwise, I’ll be trying another £10 challenge in July after relative success of June’s.

  8. waddo 2 years ago

    16:30PM – Finland Ykkonen

    Haka v Jazz

Haka, scored 8 but conceded 10 in their opening 5 home matches face a Jazz side who’ve conceded 16 from their 5 away matches. These two have played each other many times before and the last 3 meetings have seen 3, 5 and 3 goals scored.

Haka’s last straight 7 games have at least 3 goals scored but generally more. 8 from Jazz’s last 10 matches had the same outcome. Good signs here for another match full of goals.

    16:30PM – Finland Kakkonen Group C

    GBK v YPA

GBK are smashing the goals in with 16 from their opening 3 at home – 3-0, 8-1 and 5-0 wins have given them a superb start. They play a lowly YPA team who’ve conceded 7 from their opening 3 away. GBK’s last 7 games have all gone over 2.5 goals and YPA have seen their last 2 go overs as well. Good stats for another over’s I think. Going with…

    Over 2.5 goals double @ 11/10

  9. waddo 2 years ago

    16:30PM – Finland Ykkonen

    Oulu v KTP

Teams have met 4 times with 2/2/3 & 8 goals scored – that’s an average of 3.75 goals per game. 6 from Oulu’s last 7 matches have seen 3 goals or more notched. KTP have had the same outcome in 6 from their last 7.

I fancy Grindavik here – they sit 3rd after 4 games with 3 back to back wins and take on a Tindastol outfit who are looking down the barrel of a 5th straight humping.

You’re going to get little joy on the goals market until you look around 5+ so searching for value elsewhere…in this instance, it’s the handicap markets that could hold the key.

I’ll be taking Grindavik -2 for the following reasons:

    1. Grindavik have covered it in each of their last 3 (4-0, 4-1, 3-0)

    2. Tindastol have lost 3 of their last 4 by 2 or more (4-0, 5-0, 3-0)

    3. Grindavik played UIA two weeks ago and beat them
    4-1…UIA beat Tindastol 4-1 4 weeks ago.

    4. Grindavik played Vestri 4 weeks ago and beat them 3-0…Vestri beat Tindastol 3-0 2 weeks ago.

    Two selections:

Why are the odds on Flora Tallinn to win rising?
