LIKE it was on Wednesday the Super Single was late but in the end Chile did the business against Ecuador in their Copa America opener.
I had 5pts on Chile -1 AH but they covered the handicap with two second-half goals in a 2-0 win they thoroughly deserved.
For the second night in a row I thought I was going to land the Top Treble. I was pleased to tip both to score between Germany and Norway women at over evens but England were a goal short in their Under-21 friendly against Belarus.
It's that time of the week when I've got to focus on my weekend Daily Record column so Friday tips will be up as and when I get a chance.
There are nine Euro 2016 qualifiers with the highlights being Wales v Belgium, Croatia v Italy and Iceland v Czech Republic and I've posted a separate preview.
And in Copa America it's Bolivia against guests Mexico who have sent a weakened side as they'll be concentrating on the Gold Cup but who should still bag the points.
Dundalk have already been well tipped on the site as the leaders visit Sligo Rovers in the League of Ireland. The champions will be out to make amends after losing their unbeaten record to Bohemians last time out.
Sligo have won just one of their last seven home games and seem to be in a bit of disarray after a 5-1 thrashing by Shamrock Rovers last time out. Dundalk are 4-6 with Coral and 15-8 at Paddy Power -1.
Dundalk have won six and drawn one of the last seven meetings and when you consider three of the last four meetings have finished 3-0 Dundalk I'm chancing a couple of points on them -1 as the Super Single.
I'm putting up a Euro 2016 Top Treble that will just about wipe out losses if it comes in but of course is a big price at 7-1. Iyaly can avoid defeat behind closed doors in Croatia, both should score at Iceland-Czech Rep and I like Memphis Depay to score for Holland away to Latvia.
There's a full Irish top-flight card as well as some lower-league games and for a second Super Single I'm on both to score at Bohemians v Shamrock Rovers. Bohs last six apart from a 0-0 with Bray have seen both score while Rovers last three, barring a 0-0 with Cork, have seen both score and over 2.5 goals – 4-1, 5-1 and 3-2 victories.

ligo Rovers v Dundalk.
It’s bounce back time for Dundalk after they suffered their first defeat of the season last week. Historically a trip across the country to the Sligo Showgrounds is not where you would fancy needing to go to bounce back from a loss but these are different times.
In Sligo the future (or indeed the present) of manager Owen Heary is shrouded in mystery. Is he still in charge? If they lose to Dundalk tonight I think we can take it as written. No, he won’t be.
The simple fact is that Sligo are paying out a lot more dosh than the teams around them in the league. The club can’t settle for sitting third bottom just one point off the play-off place as we head into the mid-season break.
Last weeks’ hammering at the hands of Shamrock Rovers was a sign, if one were needed, that things aren’t being fixed in Sligo. If anything they are getting worse. Heary’s reputation might not come back from a defeat at home to Dundalk but that’s exactly what I expect to happen.
Just two wins all season doesn’t augur well for the home team. What with Dundalk hurting and snarling to restore their own reputation. Dundalk could come down here and do what the did when the sides first met int he league this season. On that day Dundalk bossed the game with ease. It was boys against men stuff.
You can back Dundalk to win with a -1 Asian Handicap at 2.04(26/25) with 888Sport and that offers stakeback insurance if they only win by win. Most observers can’t see Dundalk failing tonight so that is a fair enough price to have a stab at.
Drogheda Utd v Derry City.
Drogheda are a hard team to get right. They pull off some remarkable results at times and then capitulate at times when you think they should be knocking the socks off teams.
They have hot a wee run of form though with three wins on the bounce and three home wins on the trot too. Coral are still offering them at a tasty price of 3.1(21/10) and that is well above what they should be considering the form of both sides in this match.
Derry come into this on the back of a humiliating hammering from Shamrock Rovers earlier in the week. No doubt Peter Hutton would have preferred a home game to enter into the break where their form has been a little better, but not much.
It’s four defeats in five games for The Candystripes with draws at home to Sligo and away to Longford their only positives in seven matches. Their main problem has been getting goals and against an in form Drogheda they could struggle to do so again tonight.
It’s the Jekyll and Hyde nature of Drogheda that stops me backing them outright but I am very happy to take them with Draw No Bet insurance at 2.1(11/10) with Paddy Power.
Cork City, St. Pats, UCD.
This wee treble seems easy to concoct and I guess it was. The most difficult decision was dropping Athlone Town from a possible four-fold. Athlone are another side that a hard to trust and even though they are away to whipping boys Cabinteely it’s best, in my opinion, to leave them aside.
Cork and Pats should have no problems getting the wins they need to keep the pressure on the teams above them. So much so I wouldn’t blame anyone for going with a handicapped double on the Premiership sides and leaving UCD to fight their own battles.
But UCD are arguably the most in-form team in the country right now. A big win over Shelbourne mid-week was proceeded by a mauling of Cabinteely. Away to Waterford Utd won’t be a walkover but despite Roddy Collins’ bright start there, they remain joint bottom on points.
I always think it’s easier for teams in form to sign off for a mid-season break in style while the strugglers are often forlornly looking towards the break in anticipation.
The treble pays best with Boylesports at 2.36(34/25).

Hardly the pick of the action this weekend, minnows San Marino travel to Estonia and I have picked out a bet that looks almost too good to be true.
San Marino, as we know, are pretty much the worst time in the world, and they have a record that is the envy of, well, absolutely no-one.
In competitive fixtures, ie, any world cup or european Championship event, San Marino’s record is truly apalling but when they go away from home, it is almost comical how poor they are; Played 58, lost 57, drawn 1 – scored 4, conceded 312. Really, conceded 312 goals in 25 years of competitve fixtures on the road. And I thought Scotland fans had it tough…
The bet I’m looking at is of course on the handicaps with Estonia just 1/10 to win but you can get a stand out 4/5 on Estonia -2 and when you look at San Marino’s record, it’s hard to see how this won’t be a winner.
San Marino have lost by 3 or more goals in 56 of those 58 games, with their 2 best results being a 2.0 defeat in Greece in 1994,and an unlikely 1.1 draw in Latvia 7 years later.
Estonia were held to a shock 0.0 draw in the reverse fixture earlier this season, which perhaps explains the price on offer but I just cannot ignore 4/5 on Estonia -2 when you see those stats. 56 out of 58 away defeats have been by more than 2 goals and they have shipped 35 goals in their last 7 competitive away fixtures. They make whipping boys look like an underground dominatrix.
Of course the hosts are hardly the strongest team in Europe, but they were good enough to beat Slovenia at home last September in qualifying, and then away to Finland in their most recent friendly, then surely they can stick a few past the minnows.
I expect a comfortable 3 or 4 goal win for the hosts and I’m making the -2 on Estonia @4/5 my lock of the weekend.

The long shot with the Euro teams to score – 1 point

At HT, St Pats were 1-0 down so I didn’t bother covering which you’ll see I said, but when they had scored two early goals in the second half, Cork were 9/4 not to score a 2nd goal. 4 points staked on that returned 13 if they didn’t, which was what I was waiting on for the double and treble.
Total points 12 staked including cover
Cork didn’t score so the 9/4 cover won thus returning 13 points and 1 point profit.
If St Pats hadn’t score those two goals so early I would have been screwed. A lot of it is down to timing of goals if you have multiple markets but I take this punt business seriously so I always have goal alerts and bookies up on screen ready to cover when necessary.
Apologies if I haven’t made it clear.
Anyway apart from lazy shite Beneteke I had a good day .. my other 2 efforts at betting for myself in Australia and in deepest Africa won!!

God knows why the price has gone up that much. They’ve learned how to play without suarez now and like you say cavani could get a couple. He’s as short as 4/6 atgs which is a good sign. I’m only on 5 points as my others points are going on a Poland bet and a couple aussies in the morning
So …. covering. How does it work? In short there are 4 ways in which you can cover or protect yourself (that I know of). Generally your bet needs to be winning (or ahead) to make covering worthwhile as this makes the odds of the outcomes which cover your bet favorable (ie if you bet on Norwich to win and they are 2-1 up the odds of the draw or other team winning will probably be more than the odds you took for Norwich to win – assuming you took the bet at the start of the match)
1) Using cashout. This is often talked about and generally represents the worst value for punters. Generally speaking you could place bets on the other outcomes to guarantee a greater profit than cashout offers but this is because the bookies want to profit from non savvy punters. The exception to this rule is if you use something like Betfairexchange where the cashout is as good as if you covered the bet for the best profit regardless of outcomes.
2) Manually covering for maximum profit. This is where you bet on the opposite outcomes to try and get the best profit regardless of the final result. This is best illustrated using an example:
I place a Bet of £100 on Norwich to win at 7/5 (they are playing Derby in this example)
At 65 minutes they are 2-0 up – I decide I want to cover as I know they concede late goals. The odds of the double chance (Derby or Draw) are 4/1 which covers the outcomes I haven’t bet on. If I place a £48 bet on the double chance then I am left with the following outcomes:
Norwich Win
I make £140 (£100 at 7/5 odds) less the £48 I placed on my cover = £92 PROFIT
Norwich dont win (ie they lose of draw)
I make £192 (£48 at 4/1) less the initial £100 I bet on Norwich to win = £92 PROFIT
In essence regardless of what happens, once I I have made a profit. I can assure you that if you had gone for a cashout on most of the betting sites your cashout figure would have been at least 10% lower than the £92 you make by this method
3) Cover to ensure you don’t make a loss. THIS IS MY PREFERRED OPTION as generally when you cover a winning bet it wins more often than it loses (after all that’s why you or someone else tipped it)! Here the aim of the game is to ensure that if my bet loses, I have lost nothing. If the bet wins (and I find around 70% of the time it does end up winning) I get a decent cover sum (yes it’s less than what I would have got if I let the bet run but I havent lost my whole stake). An example helps illustrate this too:
I place my same bet of £100 on Norwich to win at 7/5 (they are still playing Derby)
At 65 minutes they are 2-0 up – I decide I want to cover as I know they concede late goals. The odds of the double chance (Derby or Draw) are 4/1 which covers the outcomes I haven’t bet on. If I place a £25 bet on the double chance then I am left with the following outcomes:
Norwich Win
I make £140 (£100 at 7/5 odds) less the £25 I placed on my cover = £115 PROFIT
Norwich dont win (ie they lose of draw)
I make £100 (£25 at 4/1) less the initial £100 I bet on Norwich to win = £0 (no profit, no loss)
In essence in this example I dont lose if Norwich cant hold their lead but, if they do win I make a bigger profit than by cashing out or covering for maximum profit.
I use this option quite frequently (although I use Betfairexchange where I lay the same outcome to ensure a nil loss if my bet doesnt win).
4) Sometimes you can be cute and cover with a win / win outcome. By this I mean you can bet on another market (goals) to give you cover if the odds are decent or you know about patterns with, say late goals. An example of this is
I place a Bet of £100 on Newcastle to win at 8/5 (they are playing Sunderland in this example)
At 80 minutes they are 2-0 up – I decide I want to cover as I dont want a couple of late goals to spoil my bet. The odds of o2.5 in play are 2/1 (plus I know the likelihood of a late goal at St James Park is very high as Mr Browning has spotted this pattern!).
If I place a £50 bet on o2.5 goals at 2/1 then I am left with the following outcomes:
A third goal is scored and Newcastle win
I make £160 (£100 at 8/5 odds on the WDW market) plus the £100 as the game went over 2.5 goals (£50 at 2/1) = £200 PROFIT
Newcastle win 2-0 (ie no more goals)
I make £160 (£100 at 8/5 odds on the WDW market) less £50 cover bet which loses ie £110 PROFIT
Newcastle either lose or draw (ie there was at least 2 more goals scored)
I lose my £100 initial bet but my o2.5 goals bet comes in at £100 so I break even
*** Note if I could have covered with o3.5 goals too at better odds but wouldnt get the double bubble if just one late goal was scored**
So, why cover some people still say well….
In short it means more or your bets wont lose (they just return the stake) and it’s losing bets that kill betting banks and the effect of smaller winnings but less stakes lost will ultimately mean you make more PROFIT. For example someone betting on yesterday’s SS would have lost their 5 point stake after Sheffield Utd held Spurs to a draw. At around 65 mins I covered to make my 19/20 bet using the third method I described above. The outcomes for me were then
Spurs win 5 pts become 3.5pts profit (as opposed to 4.75 points if the SS had won and I hadn’t covered)
Spurs dont win 5pts become a break even bet (as opposed to a 5 point loss if the SS hadnt been covered)
Take this over the course of the month using Mr F’s SS daily which I back religiously with my own 5pt stake and his results for the year so far without covering are approx 8 points loss) however by religiously covering I am showing circa 28 points of profit for the year to date (a swing of almost 26 points).
Of course you can’t cover every type of bet (goalscorer for example) but most of the bets on this site are more than coverable using the opposite outcomes (unders if you back overs, double chance etc).
I know some people will say “when should I cover?”. This is an impossible question to answer. As my bets tend to be for reasonable sums I have a lower tolerance than others might have. Generally if I can cover and the cost is less than 10% of my potential winnings I cover regardless of the time) otherwise I work on the basis of gut feeling however compared to some on here my risk aversion might be considered quite conservative.
I appreciate that this is a bit wordy (is anyone still reading????) but hopefully it helps some people in planning how to ensure the bookies dont get more than they need to of your hard earned cash.

WC, if you’re on over 2.5 goals in this game and there’s an early 2nd half goal, you’ll likely have decent cover. But it’s whether you want to cover stake or full return. I will most of the time only cover stake (tonight I was lucky with a point profit) but if I was you I wouldn’t cover with under 1.5 match goals. Like you say it only takes a second to score. You could cover under 1.5 goals and a goal goes in in injury time and you end up losing your first bet on over 2.5 and your under 1.5 cover stake.
