THE Voice of Value is an amateur tipster with a love for racing and jumps in particular. He caught the bug at an early age when his grandfather had a share in a winning chaser and his annual Grand National and Cheltenham guides have been well received our the past few years.

We're delighted to have him aboard and here is the third of his detailed day-one write-ups and tips for the greatest show on turf.

Ultimate Business Solutions Handicap Chase

– 2.40 p.m.

– 3 miles and 1 furlong

– Fences

– Class 1 (Grade 3) Handicap – in a handicap some horses carry more weight   than others based on their previous performance.

-The handicaps are always likely to yield some sneaky winners – don’t go wild with your bets but lots of fun to be had with high-priced outsiders each way.

There are a few things to note with these big field handicaps.  Firstly, some horses have entries in more than one race so make sure you are getting ‘non runner no bet’ from your bookie.  Secondly, there are always too many horses entered than are allowed to run in the race due to the safety limit so the horses at the lower end of the handicap don’t qualify. At the time of writing there are 57 entries still holding their ground so it is unlikely that some of the runners near the bottom will get a run.  I will update on the morning of the race to confirm the selections once we know the runners for sure.  Thirdly, they are fiercely competitive races and there are undoubtedly some crafty trainers who hold horses back for these races or at least train the horse with ‘Cheltenham in mind’.  This is double-speak for saying that the horse hasn’t been at peak fitness in the earlier part of the season.  This can lead to some head-scratching from those of us who study the form trying to work out where on earth that 33-1 shot came from. Tread carefully.

I’m working on the assumption that the ground will be good to soft or good in places and if that changes with a downpour on Monday night or Tuesday morning then the selections may well change too but that doesn’t look likely at the moment.

Each Way Selections:

Mendip Express – 12-1 (totesport)

A fantastic performance in the Becher Chase over the big Grand National fences shows that he is a terrific jumper and also that he will be able to stay this distance.  He ran in a hurdle race last time, presumably to preserve his handicap mark and I have a suspicion that there is more to come for this one.  If you go back to January of last year he has also won over this course and distance which is a big bonus for me.  Good to soft ground will be ideal and he looks like a bit of each way value in a very tricky race.

Betting suggestions:

Mendip Express 0.5pts each way at 12-1

Ah sorry, my fault. I believe it’s a non-runner and I meant to amend the post taking out Clondaw Knight. Will sort it now, cheers.
