SANTINI (4.40) gets a fairly confident nod to reverse Cheltenham form with OK Corral when they reacquaint themselves in the Doom Bar Sefton Novices’ Hurdle on the second day at Aintree.

Nico de Boinville sat a bit too far out of his ground in the Albert Bartlett and it was very hard to make up a lot of leeway in desperate conditions. Santini did well in the circumstances to take third spot behind shock winner Kilbricken Storm, with OK Corral a brave runner-up.

Santini had earlier taken the notable scalp of Black Op at Cheltenham at the end of January and earlier made a winning debut at Newbury beating useful Chef Des Obeaux in a novices’ hurdle.  Nicky Henderson had his horses in terrific form yesterday.

MIN (3.25) travelled like the winner for a long way in the Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase before succumbing to Altior’s finishing kick but compensation may await in the JLT Melling Chase.

Min faces a dangerous opponent in Balko Des Flos, so impressive in brushing aside Un De Sceaux in the Ryanair Chase. It promises to be a race to savour.

GLOBAL CITIZEN (2.20) can underline his star potential by lifting the Betway Top Novices’ Hurdle, a Grade 1 contest over two miles.

Ben Pauling’s six-year-old annihilated his rivals in the Sky Bet Dovecote Novices’ Hurdle at Kempton in February, having earlier hacked up at Southwell on softer ground.

TERREFORT (2.50) couldn’t quicken with winner Shattered Love between the last two flights in the JLT Novices’ Chase at Cheltenham but jumped soundly, a great asset around here.

The step up to 3m 1f is an unknown against the likes of battle-hardened Black Corton and Elegant Escape, but it is worth taking that risk, especially as Terrefort loves soft ground.

The handicaps are fiendishly difficult but SPIRITOFTHEGAMES (1.45) should be on the premises in the opening 2m 5f Grade 3 Handicap Hurdle.

Dan Skelton has campaigned the six-year-old at a competitive level this season, running William Henry close in the 32Red Lanzarote Hurdle at Kempton before producing an excellent third to Kalashnikov in the Betfair Hurdle.

His most recent outing was at the Cheltenham festival, finishing an honourable fifth to Moyaahed in the Randox Health County Hurdle. Spiritofthegames has a nice racing weight, with Bridget Andrews taking off 3lb.

A maximum 30-runner field is declared for the Randox Health Topham Chase and it is surely prudent having two strings to your bow, with BALLYALTON (4.05) and Top Gamble recommended.

The former ran fifth to Native River off level weights in the 2016 Mildmay Novices’ Chase (Blaklion third) and his fourth to The Storyteller at Cheltenham gives Ballyalton an obvious chance.

Kerry Lee’s Top Gamble is a very consistent chaser at a slightly higher level. The 10-year-old was third to Shantou Flyer at Cheltenham’s New Year’s Day fixture and occupied the same spot behind Le Prezien in the Grand Annual Chase. James Bowen takes off 3lb.

Ultragold won the race last year, with O O Seven back in fourth, and they should go well once again.

At Kempton, CASIMA (8.15) is well worth an interest in the 1m 3f fillies’ handicap.

Archie Watson’s three-year-old was strong at the finish when scoring at Wolverhampton over an extended 1m 1f and fourth horse Appenzeller ran well in defeat earlier this week.

John, what chance do give Baie Des Iles. The grey mare opened up at 80/1 a while ago and is now 14/1. If the money keeps coming surely it will be one of the biggest grand national gambles in history.

    • elvis parsley 6 years ago

Well done all who picked terrefort, Alan, John b etc.
      Impressive animal that.
How good time will tell ?

Last 2 winners of this race were 1 and 2 in the gold cup !!

    • duncanpoundcake 6 years ago

The Notorious, the GN used to be a great trends race ,but not so much since they changed the fences,7 year olds dont win ,mares dont win ,female jockeys don’t win , Baie Des Iles has been tipped by a couple of very shrewd tipsters which explains the money I was slow and only got 40/1 GL

  17. errryesno 6 years ago

The form line for another stowaway is also on the blind side, 2nd short head. who then went onto win 2 good races. global citizen was 5th and then went to ben pauling.
backed from 66t1 last night and clearly saved for this.
In the 4,40 am also on point of princible at 28 t1 4 places because of the trainers previous aintree pattern placing. this horse fits the profile of a future stayer that will be aimed at spring races.

Really pleased for lalor small ew win but more for the wife of the late Richard Wollacott. Trooper of a lady. The Rudyard Kipling line… treat triumph and defeat as the same two imposters, spring to mind for this.

  18. errryesno 6 years ago

Great run from sizing granite in that ground. Another for the spring tracker system !!
