IT was a good Monday for Milesey with racing tips and football picks. Can the man who'll want Stevenage to win more than his Lucky 15 come up with the good today?

Here are his thoughts on a busy day on the track – and remember to check his footie predictions too.

LEICESTER 3.0

Noble Witness was eased in weights prior to regaining winning thread at Catterick (25f) in December but well held off revised mark since and this no easier.

Nom de Guerre has only been seen three times since opening chasing account at Wincanton (25f) in April 2010, proving he retains ability when second over C&D last time, and can’t rule out.

Not So Sure Dick bumped into Hunt Ball on a couple of occasions last year but offered little on belated return recently.

Power Pack Jack was a three-time winner over fences in 2010-11 but overall profile decidedly inconsistent, plenty more lows than highs. Others more solid.

Franklin Roosevelt was blinkered (back on) when winning handicap hurdle last spring for Warren Greatrex. Off the mark over fences with easy win at Southwell last week and sure to go well again under a penalty.

Basil Fawlty’s chances over hurdles often ruined by refusal to settle, though not given hard time both starts over fences. Looks stable No.2 though.

Lemon’s Gent landed a gamble sole start in bumpers at Ludlow in May 2011 but no better than modest form in four tries over hurdles. Showed more in cheekpieces on second start over fences but more required.

Abbey Dore gained fourth win over fences in the mud at Fontwell (3¼m) in January 2011. Good second off a higher mark when in April that year but well held on belated reurn recently.

Thorncliffer was tongue-tied when opening chasing account at Wetherby (25f) in December under this rider. Failed to complete next two starts but still early days with him.

VERDICT: Franklin Roosevelt was an impressive winner last week and a penalty may not be enough to prevent a follow up. Nom de Guerre and Thorncliffer can make a place.

Leicester 3.0

FRANKLIN ROOSEVELT 1.8 betfair

Leicester 5.0

QUINTE DU CHATELET 3.5 betfair
On official rating, the horse to beat in this race, the market wouldn’t suggest that though. Maybe because over fences this horse has really struggled but off a nice mark today for this handicap chase and on hurdles form is my pick for this race.

Catterick 2.50

TOUBEERA 1.99 betfair
For the in-form yard of Venetia Willaims, Aidan Coleman on board, this pairing have a great strike rate. Finished third last time out in a listed event, behind two classy horses, nothing in this field today would scare me and should be good enough to win.

Catterick 3.50

BUTHELEZI 2.2 betfair
Against lesser opposition today, after being disappointing last time out, has been put back among novices today.

Catterick 4.50

NO WAY HOZAY 2.3 / THE FOX’S DECREE 2.74 betfair
Two horses I really like, NO WAY HOZAY carrying a weight rise for completing the hat-trick last time out will be the one to beat, didn’t know when it was beaten last time out and came back determined to win.

THE FOX’S DECREE, back to fences today, carrying less weight and off a mark of 91, will be in with a great shout in this race. I can’t side with either and will just sit back and hope for a great race.

Lingfield 2.40

MISLEADING PROMISE 1.8 betfair
Officially rated the top horse in this race, is in a lot better form then the rest of these runners, and should prove tough to beat.

Lingfield 4.40

I will personally be laying STAR OF ROHM (LAY 1.79) in this race and I hope Frank Spencer in the saddle won’t disappoint today, has lost me so much money in the past backing horses with Frank on board so I hope today by not winning this race he will win me some money. I am going to side with SIBAYA 2.38 on debut today with Jim Crowley on board.

Lingfield 5.10

BROXBOURNE 1.94 betfair
Massive raise of 21lb for her hat-trick, still going to be a tough horse to beat today, not a lot of class anywhere else in this field so even with the weight rise I can’t see anything getting near today.

It’s two weeks today to the start of the Cheltenham Festival, with Simonsig in the Arkle and My Tent Or Yours in the Supreme among many people’s bankers for the week; and then there is the fascinating puzzle that is this year’s Champion Hurdle – a veritable feast of racing.

As for today, the staying handicap hurdle at Catterick at 16:20 sees a suggested bet running off a BHA mark of 75, from 4 lb out of the weights. That horse, Bright Cloud, is, however, undeniably well treated on her form in points and hunter chases last year. She’s had two attempts in handicap hurdles run on very testing ground this season and after getting seriously bogged down when weak in the market on near-unraceable going at Towcester, she shaped much better at Sedgefield next time. The extreme distance on bad ground seemed to find her out that afternoon, and, with conditions set to be much less attritional today, Bright Cloud has to be given one more chance to prove herself on a lenient mark.

The day’s best race is the novice chase at Leicester at 16:00, which actually features a couple of runners with Cheltenham entries, Howard’s Legacy and Top Smart. The pair met at Wincanton earlier in the season, finding the subsequent Racing Plus Chase winner Opening Batsman too good for them as they took the minor placings. Howard’s Legacy is likely to confirm that form with Top Smart, though he faces potentially more serious dangers in the shape of The Musical Guy, Valoroso and Volador.

Volador was the best of the field over hurdles but his jumping has yet to convince at all over fences. The lightly-raced Valoroso would have won at Wincanton last time, unfortunate to come down at the last when well clear; that form is hard to weigh up and was shown on very testing ground but at the very least indicates Valoroso has plenty of potential as a chaser. The Musical Guy may well benefit from the return to better ground and would have a good chance on his second at Folkestone; however, his jumping fell seriously apart after halfway here next time. Howard’s Legacy is the most likely winner but his form is not that far ahead of his rivals and he has to prove himself away from the mud. Given the jumping concerns about both Volador and The Musical Guy, it could be worth chancing Valoroso against the favourite at the likely odds.

Back Bright Cloud @ 4.6 in the 16:20 at Catterick
Back Valoroso @ 9.4 in the 16:00 at Leicester

  10. Milesey 11 years ago

Start at Lingfield and in the 14:10 where Haverstock has been backed from 7.7 in to 4.7. The Mark Johnston-trained three-year-old doesn’t have great form figures, but showed promise in maidens last year and had been running over trips of 6f and 7f which perhaps doesn’t suit him. He races over 1m2f today and his pedigree (his sire is New Approach) suggests he should enjoy the longer trip. This race is also a drop in class and the market support suggests he will be too good for his rivals today.

Next to Leicester and in the 16:00 where Howards Legacy has been well supported this morning from 3.0 in to 2.44. A winner on his chase debut at Ffos Las in November, he also finished runner-up last month at Wincanton. He was second to Opening Batsman that day and the form has been given a boost as he won a Grade 3 chase at Kempton over the weekend. Trainer Venetia Williams has a 23% strike rate at this track and the stable have won this race three times in the last ten seasons, the market support suggests they win it again today.

    HORSE RACING TIPS

    WEDNESDAY 27TH FEBRUARY 2013
    —————————–

    WINCANTON 3.00
    SUSTAINABILITY 2.5
Taken up another 3lb today, but can’t see that being enough to stop this horse from taking this one, the yard are in form, was beaten last time out but gave a good performance.

    WINCANTON 3.30
    XAARCET 7.4
Better off in the weights today for this race, and is a horse on the up with plenty of scope.

    LINGFIELD 2.10
    IRISH BUCCANEER 1.63 ( NAP )
Based on it’s last run out, will be very tough to beat today based on the runners in this field today. Lost to better company last time out and shouldn’t have a problem today winning this race.

    BANGOR 4.20
    COVERHOLDER 1.53 ( NAP )
Running of a weight lower then last time out when it won to complete the 4 timer, his new mark of 110 comes in 3 days time, so is well in today.

    LINGFIELD 3.10
    LITTLE JIMMY 3.05
This horse on the up is being slipped into fields at the moment where he doesn’t have to perform to his best to win the races. will be able to defy the weight rise and nothing i can see will give this horse any trouble.

Can only find one horse i actually think will win at Kempton, the rest i’d be hard to pick out anything i would be confident taking. So for me it’s just:
    Kempton 6.00
    DESERT DONKEY 2.54
Only just beaten last time out, and on that day had an amatuer on board, but today the experience of David Probert on board will give this horse every chance of winning this one. Off a mark of 64 i give this one every chance of making a winning handicap debut.

    LINGFIELD 4.10
    TEN FIRES 16.5( OUTSIDER )
Took a risk on this horse last time out and just couldn’t handle the going on that day, and i hope the gound has firmed up abit more that will give this horse more of a chance today to at least get in the places.

    BANGOR 3.20
    SARANDO 10.5 ( OUTSIDER )
This handicap hurdle may just give this horse a chance today, off a mark of 120 has a really decent chance today. Has been struggling of late so lets hope for a great run today.

Ivan Vasilevich was successful twice over hurdles last summer, and ran well in defeat when last seen at Ffos Las in August. Needs to pick up a penalty if he’s to have a chance to fulfil Cheltenham Festival ambitions.

Home Run has really come good over hurdles recently, completing a 5-timer at Musselburgh (2m) on New Year’s Day and better still when runner-up in competitive events on last 2 starts. Can go well again.

Suerte Al Salto was a Fontwell bumper winner who shaped promisingly when runner-up in pair of novice hurdles in November. Added to sequence of seconds in jumpers’ bumper last month, and should have more to offer.

Xaarcet has been most progressive since sent handicapping, and completed a hat-trick over 2¾m here in the mud 11 days ago. That trip the limit of his stamina, and should have the speed to cope with this lesser test.

Tiny Tenor showed ability in bumpers, and matched form of hurdles debut when fourth to My Tent Or Yours at Huntingdon last time. Bit more needed to defy opening mark, but in good hands, and should do better.

Islandmagee finished in the frame on all 3 starts in bumpers, and improving with experience over hurdles. Did well given way race was run when winning handicap at Kempton last time, and 5 lb rise may undervalue that effort.

In The Crowd looked nothing out of ordinary in 4 runs on Flat for Alan Swinbank, but off the mark at second attempt in juvenile hurdles in December. Only seventh on handicap bow at Ludlow last time, though.
