I ADMITTED to taking few chances with Wednesday's Top Treble (fourfold) and Super Single – but while both came out it wasn't without a sweat.
Man United -1 paid 20-23 but for long spells Burnley were the better side at Old Trafford while it took a late Chelsea goal to bring up the 2-1 fourfold which also had Barcelona, Celtic and Man United.
After what happened with Arsenal on Tuesday I said in advance I'd cover Man Utd -1 if they went two goals ahead and I did so. In the comments section I advised Burnley to score the fifth goal at 14-1 with bet365 – and I decided on a 0.2pts partial cover so I've deducted that amount off my winnings.
There isn't much to look at on Thursday with Metz v Brest in the French Cup and Anderlecht v Gent in the Belgian Cup as well as knockout matches in the likes of Greece, Turkey and Poland.
I'd imagine Anderlecht will go full strength as they try to clinch a final meeting with Bruges. They don't need to win the game of course as they lead 2-0 from the first leg away. Gent will have to go for goals so it could be an open game with both scoring and that pays 10-11 at Coral – much the same price as a home success.
Metz sit bottom of Ligue won and haven't won since the start of November apart from two cup games against third-tier opposition. Brest lie second in Ligue 2 so will go there full of confidence but it's worth noting Metz have lost just three league games at home out of 11.
Both sides have key players missing with Florent Malouda out for Metz so ex-West Ham striker Modibo Maiga, who has been a flop so far, will get another chance to shine up front after returning from the African Nations.
Brest will miss midfield star Bruno Gourgi but are boosted by the signings of Gaetan Courtet and Youssef Adnane and both should start. It's not an easy tie to call but I can see Brest at least avoiding defeat against a side struggling for goals.
So I'm happy to put up a 1pt Daily Double on both to score at Anderlecht and Brest plus one at 21-10 with bet365.
Since Sunday I've been tipping Hibs to beat Rangers and with news keeper Steve Simonsen has been handed a ban for betting and Lee McCulloch a stamping suspension that keeps them out of tomorrow's home match with Hibs I'm even more convinced the Easter Road side can record their third win of the season over the Glasgow side.
Hibs were first mentioned on the site at 7-2 with bet365 but best price now is 9-4 at McBookie and BetVictor. I'll have a full preview of the game tomorrow – and if you live in Scotland you can have a risk-free £5 bet on any Rangers-Hibs market with McBookie.

Guys I am after a bit of help please.
A friendly game played Sunday in Norway between Alta v Tromsdalen, I had a bet on over first half goals, with Bet365 the game disappeared at around 32mins, i had a look round the net for live score update and found a website which was just a red screen with the live score.
Fun thing is it stated this game was being played over 3 30min periods, never heard of this before and if its correct then I would have thought the bet was void. the game finished 1-4.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Obviously this will not appeal to everybody as it is spread over 2 days and many on here like the ‘buzz’ of betting hour by hour and tipping day after day but everyone to their own. Considering this pays above Evens it looks a very very strong bet for those who are prepared to pick and choose and then wait. Rangers come up short every time they play either Hearts or Hibs as they are simply a very average team but in a league where anyone can beat anyone else, outwith Hearts, Hibs can be regarded as having a decent chance of avoiding defeat tomorrow night. Stubbs has goalscorers in his side now and the onus may well be on Rangers to score 2 or 3 to avoid defeat and that may well prove impossible as the stadium will be near empty and the will to win is simply no longer there at Rangers. Hearts should beat Livingston without doubt with Eckersley likely to return along with Sow and combining these two games seems a reasonable way to more than double any stakes.

Mr F, Mr O, A -1 and/or 3 goals should not be beyond us. if Eckersley starts then the options for himself and Paterson as attacking full backs increase our chances without doubt. Sow may also return but I would like to see him on the bench and Zeefuik and Keatings starting again with Jamie Walker out wide. Hearts are becoming very hard to call correctly handicap wise as we seem to pick up late injuries and until the starting line ups are announced Neilson just keeps us guessing. We can score 4 or 5 this week I reckon if the afore mentioned players return.

In my betting adventure I try to find opportunities where bookies got their odds wrong. This is not as easy as someone may think – the odds compilers working for the largest betting companies in the world are able to determine the probability of all outcomes in a soccer match with great accuracy.
Can bookies lose if we are playing THEIR game according to THEIR rules?
Imagine I offer to play a game with you. I roll a dice, your stake is 1$ and your return will be 2$ if it’s 1, 2, 3 and 0$ if it’s 4, 5, 6. Would you play that game with me? Is my offer fair? Well, taking into account the fact that you have 50% probability of having 1, 2 or 3 on a dice you will end with a scratch (no profit, no loss) in the infinite number of games. You can record a loss after 25 games, you can record a profit but long term such a games will not be profitable for you. It’s maths.
We play a similar game with bookies however, they add a profit margin to their odds offered and we are being offered 1.9$ or even 1.86 or lower return for a 1$ stake for an outcome with 50% probability of happening. Looking for evidence? Here it is – I found it on the Internet:
Stats below are based on odds database containing results and bookmakers’ average odds for 40.000 soccer games.
Betting on away teams with an odd > 3.00 would have returned $0.82 for every $1 staked (21700 games).
Betting on away teams with an odd > 5.00 would have returned $0.76 for every $1 staked (7000 games).
Betting on away teams with an odd > 7.00 would have returned $0.70 for every $1 staked (2400 games).
Now let’s look at another odds interval – the home favourites:
Betting on home teams with an odd < 1.50 would have returned $0.94 for every $1 staked (5100 games).
Betting on home teams with an odd < 1.40 would have returned $0.95 for every $1 staked (3000 games).
Betting on home teams with an odd < 1.30 would have returned $0.97 for every $1 staked (1500 games).
These numbers show that the bookmakers have only got a slight advantage over the punters when taking bets on favourites. E.g. if you bet on home wins at odds lower than 1.30, you will get as much as 97% of your total stake back.
The third and last odds interval to look at is the short-priced away wins:
Betting on away teams with an odd < 2.00 would have returned $0.98 for every $1 staked (2300 games).
Betting on away teams with an odd < 1.80 would have returned $0.99 for every $1 staked (1300 games).
Betting on away teams with an odd < 1.60 would have returned $1.06 for every $1 staked (550 games).
The returns here are interesting. Betting on odds lower than evens will return 98% of your stake, while you will get 99% back when betting on teams available at less than 1.80. Betting on teams offered at less than 1.60 will give you a 6% advantage over the bookies!
This is why finding value selections is key in betting – selections where odds are too high when compared to a probability of event.

That’s how I do it mate. Say you fancy a 6/4 bet, think about it. If you think your bet has a 50% chance of happening but you’re getting 6/4 (40%) then every time you should take this bet.

I guess it’s all down to peoples interpretation of what the word value actually means! For me it’s a price that is actually higher than the likelihood of that bet coming in how but for many in here it will be a big price which they feel has a chance of coming in!
A price of 1/2 for a strong team to score 2 goals for me is good value, where as 7/4 for a team to win May be viewed as a good value by others depending on the stats!
Celtic when they played Rangera where 1/2 to score two! Many would say 1/2 is a rubbish price but I disagree! 1/3 represents it has a high likelyhood of coming in!

What I would add to that is sometimes if you spot a game that is good for goals or a team to score over 1.5 goals etc it may be worth placing your bets in play if you feel it is too short. The chances of a goal in the first twenty minutes are very slim, in fact the average time of the first goal of the game ranges between 23′ and 30′.
It is amazing how quickly the price improves for those kind of bets after 15-20mins of a football match.
An example of this would have been the Arsenal game against Leicester where if you’d have fancied over 2.5 goals before the game you would have got 4/7 before kick off. By waiting until the 15-20 min mark I would have imagined the price for over 2.5 goals would have been touching nearer the evens mark (making it a more efficient single bet).
There are also instances where games have got to 0-0 at HT in ‘traditionally lots of goals leagues’ and where it would have been odds on for over 2.5 before kick off it is now over evens for over 1.5 goals. These are real value bets. When you stumble across a game like this its important to check form, H2H’s at HT and pretend this game hasn’t started. If the stats suggest BTTS or over 2.5 goals, get on the over 1.5 goals bet at a great price.
Was only last week in a South America game where it was 0-0 at HT and the stats were crazy for BTTS and over 2.5 goals. If the game was about to start it would have been a bet I’d have placed as nailed on cert.
Over 1.5 goals was 5/6, BTTS was a very nice 2/1 and over 2.5 goals was just over the 2/1 mark also.
All the bets flew in at great prices.
Now I’m not saying it happens all the time but if you was willing to put £20 on at 1/2 for over 2.5 goals before kick off to return £30 then why shouldn’t you place £20 on at evens for over 1.5 goals.
Everyone knows matches are 90mins but more often than not the goals are seen in the second half.
This isn’t a bible how I bet as I prefer to bet evens or higher before the game but its an idea next time you fancy a 1/2 shot to just hold fire and be patient and wait for the right price.

Now, Petrolero are clearly the favourites here but have had an indifferent start to the season – W1 D3 L1 from their opening 5. Sport Boys are hopeless, losing their first 5 games. So there should be little doubt about the winner but what I’m looking at here is goals. Petrolero have seen BTTS in all 5 games while Sport Boys, while terrible, have seen BTTS in both of their home games so far.
I think the 13/10 with BetVictor is generous. I was on Petrolero last weekend with the BTTS and it came steaming in within 30 mins, and at the odds offered tonight I think I’ll be on them again.

@JakeT – why dont you ring the bookie you placed the bet with? Surely they can sort this out for you and possibly offer a cash out amount over the phone? If not, sometimes they may offer you a free bet to the same amount that you staked. This happened to me the other week, it’s not ideal, but your best bet will be to give them a call and ask why.

Liverpool Loyal, you need to explain you’ve moved house and that there was no fraudulent act taking place. If your card details don’t match the address they’re quite right to ask why. Also punters should tell firms when they move so this doesn’t happen.

Greg – you are absolutely right, looking for a price that is actually higher than the likelihood of a bet coming seems to be the key but can we be disciplined enough to do that all the time? :)
On your second point – I do not place bets lower than evens but sure, different odds can represent proper value – even odds 1,50 can be valuable selections.
Craigyboy – that’s an interesting point and yes more goals are scored in 2nd half (as per the average). Some time back I checked that for all major leagues and 5 seasons or so back. If you split a football match in 15 minute periods, the majority of goals are scored in the last 15 minutes. I sometimes find a value there because you risk little to win big if a goal is scored late in a game.
It’s not easy to win with bookies but my theory is that it is possible long term if you approach betting in a proper way. I’m sure you are aware of this but making 5% – 10% profit per year is a very good figure. Many punters unfortunately think that they can triple their banks within a month or two and it will just not happen.
I am also looking at football trading as it is something that may give you more opportunities to get advantage over bookies!
