THE racing boys have had their two days holiday and return with a bang on a packed Boxing Day card.
Our man Johnb has picked out his selections and reasoning has been added.
He says: “The good thing about so many meetings on Boxing Day is the bookies unwittingly give great value and my three selections are probably double the odds they should be.”
Max Ward 13-2 S
Mythical Madness 3-1 NAP/NB (double stake)
Lightscameraction 9-2 C
Also 3×0.5pt doubles & 1×0.5pt treble Codds 5-1, 11-4 and 9-2
With three runs at this course, two wins and a second beaten a head Mythical Madness loves this surface and is the clear pick on current form. The yard are in decent form and he is still improving.
A favourite of this thread and myself on the all-weather in the past, Lightscameraction’s form wavered slightly on the turf in good races but can and should bounce back on the all-weather.
Drop down in grade after struggling against Altior and Charbel last time but wasn’t disgraced. Could easily bounce back to form here on Boxing Day and is a massive price as the bookies have looked into his last run too much. He is a confident selection after his debut run over fences which was even more impressive as it was after 843 days off the course.
The King George is a race to watch as it sees Cue Card v the novice Thistlecrack. Everyone knows what I think of Thistlecrack as I was touting him as the 2017 Gold Cup winner well over a year ago and advised him at 20-1. He will have to be something special to beat Cue Card this early in his chasing career but is something special and will be one of the greatest chasers ever seen. I saw it when he was hurdling and knew he was going to be even better over fences. A defeat wouldn’t end his chances in the Gold Cup as he is still so inexperienced and Cue Card on form is the worthy favourite as Thistlecrack is too short and has no value but I do expect Thistlecrack to win and win well.
- 1000 Guineas 2017 – PROMISE TO BE TRUE 20-1 Betfred (now 25-1)
- 2000 Guineas 2017 – CHURCHILL 20-1 bet365 (now 6-4)
- 2017 Derby – CHURCHILL 33-1 Racebets (now 7-1)
- 2000 Guineas 2017 – BLUE POINT 14-1 racebets (now 33-1)
Johnb says: “I have already advised Churchill for next year's 2000 Guineas & Derby – he has been really impressive this season and my view is he will get even better next year.
“Blue Point on the other hand is harder to call for how he will progress next year. If he trains on then in my view it’s a straight fight between Blue Point & Churchill but in the Derby Churchill is the only horse for me – he gives me the same excitement as Golden Horn did.
“But to answer my question earlier the most impressive horse I have seen this year is BLUE POINT with Churchill and Annie Power a close second and third.”
