LOOKING forward to the start of the US PGA at Valhalla on Thursday and we'll see if it really is the start of the Rory McIlroy era.

The Irish ace is going for three wins in a row after The Open and WGC Bridgestone Invitational and tees off as the hot favourite.

His outright price of around 5-1 is Tigeresque in his prime but I've got to 6-1 and reckon he'll be celebrating another Major title on Sunday night. As well as McIlroy I've gone each-way for Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler and Charl Schwartzel and I've reminded you of Ace Venturer's tips at the bottom.

Feel free to put up golf or any other sports tips here and I'll fire up some other bets on the tournament if I get a chance.

Ace Venturer's tips

McIlroy 5pts (5-1, bet365, Ladbrokes)

Fowler 2pts ew (25-1, Stan James)

Garcia 2.5pts ew (18-1, bet365, Paddy Power)

Rose 2pts ew (18-1, bet365, Paddy Power)

Schwartzel 1pt ew (35-1, Paddy Power)

    Tennis double for this evening
    MURRAY v gasquet 3/10
    AZARENKA 2-0 v Watson EVENS

    Double pays around 1.7/1

    • Ad 10 years ago

I’m with you on Murray Iddy and he’ll be in my daily double. I would urge caution with Azarenka though. Watson was really good at times yesterday and scored a great win in the end. she might suffer the effects today but Azarenka really isn’t at peak fitness or sharpness yet and i think there have to be significant question marks over her until she proves she’s back to near her best. I definitely think Watson could take a set here.

  5. Ad 10 years ago

having said that i wont be backing her to do so, so i wish you luck!

Still waiting on winning free bet to be credited to my account we’ll over 3 weeks now !!!!! Last time I won a free bet it was credited to my account same day as passing on my username . Any reason for the delay this time MRF ????

    • Mr Fixit 10 years ago

Paul, there is no delay, we always say it can take up to 4 or 5 weeks. You must have won the last one on the day the bookie credits the account. What prize is it?

    • Paul Sinnamon 10 years ago

It was £25 free bet for getting firstgoalscorers in quarter finals

    Daily doubles:

    1)
    Murray d Gasquet
Reechard is rounding into good form himself but Murray was impeccable yesterday in is first match back. If he approaches the same level he will have too much for Gasquet.

    Dimitrov d Robredo
Young gave a rusty Dimitrov a run for his money early on but the Bulgarian came roaring back to win in style. With the cobwebs hopefully blown away, a firing Dimitrov will have too much game on a hard court for Robredo.

    Pays 1/1

    2)

    Serena 2-0 d Safarova
Serena continued her flawless post-wimbledon form by smashing Sam Stosur 6-0, 6-2 yesterday, losing just 2 points on serve in the first set and 6 in the second. Safarova is very capable but hardly dependable and Serena does everything better than her. Unless there’s a sudden and significant dip in the Williams game this will be over in 2.

    Djokovic 2-0 d Tsonga
Novak looked like he might be in for a shock first round exit yesterday, but as ever, those fears were foundless. He always finds a way, especially against Gail, and now more match sharp he should take care of Tsonga in fairly routine fashion. Of the last 19 sets these two have contested, Novak has won…..19. This is simply a dreadful matchup for Jo and he knows it. I doubt even he believes he can get a set of Novak.

    pays 11/10

  8. Ad 10 years ago

Michelson at 21/20 to win his 3 ball against tiger and harrington looks a GREAT bet thoughts?

  10. raaljaca 10 years ago

On my usual Jordan Speith to win and also first round leader at 45/1 and 40/1. I he retires in 40 years without winning a major I am going to be really annoyed!

  11. Iddy 10 years ago

Ad – it’s a fair comment on Azarenka 2-0 being a risky call and I generally don’t go for 2-0 wins. I think Aza is slowly getting back to her level and don’t feel Watson has the weapons to hurt her. Plus Watson had a tough, near 3 hours, 3 setter yesterday so very hopeful it will come through. Think Watson has won 8 games in 3 matches v Aza (although 2 years since last match).

I would advise add Ferrer and Dimitrov (to Murray) if you are unsure of Azarenka 2-0.

    • Ad 10 years ago

Az could well be on her way back and make easy work of it as as you say, watson could be tired. But she is hitting bigger these days and being more aggressive so I wouldn’t count her out. expecting a double bagel now i’ve said that!

Wawrinka really should beat Anderson but theres something making me want to chicken out of that one. may add that to the others if i man up

  12. Skippy 10 years ago

Raal you reckon the bookies will be foolish enuff to give us evens or better for deontay wilder 1st round ko, in his next fight?

    • raaljaca 10 years ago

Skippy will depend on his opponent mate.

  13. Ad 10 years ago

Just checked the scores…what has happened to Djokovic ?! bad news for my second double. Potentially very good news for my Murray to win the tourney tip though.

  14. The special one 10 years ago

Rory is 7/4 best priced at the mo

  15. Ad 10 years ago

in play over 9.5 games in set 2 of jankovic v vandeweghe @ 1/1

close as they come so far. expect more of the same

  16. Skippy 10 years ago

Looking at his opponent Raal I think I might be a bit optimistic hoping for evens that said I think whatever price they give first round knockout is a dead cert

  17. Ad 10 years ago

One double lost with Djokovic’s shock defeat and one half came in, with Dimitrov winning and Murray being voided.
    Lopez Berdych still to run.

    Tomorrow’s tips:

    Daily double:

    Murray d Tsonga @ 4/9

Tsonga’s genuinely shocking 6-2 6-2 scoreline v Djokovic may have people giving him a chance here, but I really don’t think we will be seeing the same thing again here. I’m very conscious I said exactly the same thing about Novak, but Murray LOVES playing JO, and won’t have the same hangover problems that Novak clearly had carried over from his epic battle with Monfils. Murray leads the head to head 9-1, didn’t play today so should be fresh, and has the perfect game to foil JO. Kyrgios, though he didn’t play near the same level as Tsonga allegedly did, is good preparation for Murray, and he never looked phased returning his monster serve. Following up a historic win over the world number 1 by beating another nemesis in Murray is a huge ask, and I can’t see past Andy here.

    Dimitrov d Anderson @ 8/13
While a win over Wawrinka proves Anderson is a real threat here, Dimitrov shoudl take this on paper, and has proven he has the beating of him in recent times, winning their last 3 matches, including a 7-6, 3-6, 7-6 victory on hard court earlier this year. He should by now be finding his hard court feet after a great grass court season, and wins over Fabio Fognini and a rusty Wawrinka while encouraging for Anderson, shouldn’t be overstated. If Anderson serves a flawless match he has a chance here, but I think this is a good price for Dimitrov.

    Double pays 1.33/1

  18. Ad 10 years ago

Great comeback from Lopez there to make today a decent one. Who do you fancy tomorrow Iddy?

  19. Ad 10 years ago

a smallish single on Dimitrov to win 2-1 @ 10/3

  20. Iddy 10 years ago

Ad – my double came up but paid Evens as Murray match was void.
Today I have my eye on 3 matches
    MAKAROVA v wandeveghe
FERRER v Federer (u read that right!!!)
    KUKUSHKIN v Devereaman (challenger level)
Just need to check odds before I finalise my double

  21. Iddy 10 years ago

Great call on Lopez yesterday Ad –
I didn’t like the 2-0 Djoko yesterday, should have warned u against it as I watched the Monfils match and could see Djoko was struggling. I agree with Muzza, Dimitrov and Raonic tip today’s though, they should all win

  22. Ad 10 years ago

    Cheers Id,
nice bet on Azarenka. I was wrong to be cautious about that. Right to be cautious about Wawrinka in the end though so its balanced out okay in the end.

I’m with you on Makarova, in fact I’ve probably got a bit more confidence in her than i do in Dimitrov now. The extra hardcourt time since Wimbledon and the huge serving give the upset a chance, so i’m going to keep it low stakes. I think a bet very likely to come in from that match is over 21.5 games at 1/2.

Having slept on it, Makarova / Murray
would probably now be my most confident double now. I also think Venus Williams will beat CSN unless she is completely knackered, and like you i’ve also been looking at Kukushin.

I can’t see Daveed beating Rog though! Losing to Federer is the habbit of a lifetime. Why do you think it will change today?

If I go on an underdog today it will be Feliciano Lopez. He’s been playing some great tennis this year, was excellent in the second two sets that i saw yesterday against Berdych, served and returned superbly, and is facing an opponent who could isn’t the worlds best returner and could be fatigued from his run to the title last week.
Available at 14/5. Milos in three @ 16/5 is another possibility.

  23. Ad 10 years ago

I’m not being particularly decisive on today’s matches so that’s a sign for me to keep things simple and sensible.

Having said that, another possible addition is Azarenka to beat Radawanska! I aired concerns over her yesterday, but Radawanska has hardly been convincing herself lately, and normally the best price you’d get in this matchup is about 1/5 on Vika.

  24. Ad 10 years ago

    Murray/Makarova pays around 5/4

  25. Iddy 10 years ago

Ad – Wandeveghe has played back to back 3 hour 3 setters v Jankovic and ivanovic so there should be a bit of fatigue. Plus Makarova is in good form.
Muzza match is a difficult one to judge – how much of yesterday was great play from JWT and how much was Djoko being off. If JWT is on form he can beat Muzza.
Ferrer is an outside tip – Fed is 33 today! And Ferrer has to beat him at some stage. Will be tough for Fed after last nights tough match v Cilic….it’s now or never for Daveeeed.

  26. Iddy 10 years ago

I have settled on the following treble for today
    MURRAY
    MAKAROVA
    KUKUSHKIN

  27. cooldude 10 years ago

Ad, just read an article on Tsonga beating Novak! Is that the upset of the tournament so far??

    • Ad 10 years ago

absolutely dude. I mean, maybe some people thought it would be quite close after the exhausting match Novak played against Monfils the day before, but I don’t know anyone out there who actually backed Tsonga to win that one. The head to head is about as conclusively one sided as they come. Novak had won the last NINETEEN sets against Tsonga! And not only did he lose, he was thumped 6-2, 6-2. Novak never loses by that margin. Since 2005 he has only ever once won fewer games than that, in January 2010 to Verdasco. Amazing scoreline.

    • cooldude 10 years ago

And Tsonga would have been generously priced considering his world ranking. Ad what has Tsonga achieved in his tennis career so far?

  28. Ad 10 years ago

I hear what you’re saying, I just haven’t seen anything from Ferrer recently to suggest he’s at the level needed to beat Federer. I haven’t seen him play this week, but Roger has been at his highest level for years, which really is quite high indeed! Barring a real shocker from Federer, I think Daveed lacks the game and the belief to do anything here. A comfortable 2-0 Rog would be my shout.

From what i’ve read about the JWT ND match, djokovic had a bit of a stinker and was clearly suffering from the night before. JO served superbly by all accounts, while Novak couldnt get his serve or return going. Murray was on absolute fire on both fronts against Kyrgios, and fatigue certainly won’t be an issue. However well he may have played yesterday, this is still a terrible matchup for JO, and the only reason I have any doubts over Murray are because I was burned by shock losses to Stepanek and Dimitrov on the grass. But even so, JO isn’t a great returner nor as consistent off the ground, especially the backhand side, as either of those two. Got to think Murray will wear him down by making him play one too many shots time and time again.

Kukushin, Makarova, Murray is a good treble.

I don’t want to place too many bets so I am sticking with Murray/Makarova, plus the Murray/Dimitrov double I placed last night.

And just for fun a speculative acca of
    Kukushin
    Azarenka
    V.Williams
    Makarova
    Murray
    Dimitrov

  29. Ad 10 years ago

Dude- Tsonga hasn’t achieved much from a winning titles point of view. But he has has the (mis)fortune of playing in the era of three of the greatest players of all time who split nearly everything between themselves. what he has managed to do is hold down a place in the top10 for the best part of his career and consistently make runs to the quarters/ semis of grand slams. He also reaches the Australian open final once, and the semis of the French, which were both huge deals for him, but in a smiliar way to Berdych, there are very valid doubts abot his ability to being his best tennis to the big stage. mentally, and defensively he isn’t at the same level as the best guys, and in this day and age it’s so hard to win the big titles if you’re a bit behind in either of those two areas

  30. Ad 10 years ago

Id also say he’s brought charisma and laughter and entertainment to the tennis court which shoudlnt be overlooked

  31. Iddy 10 years ago

Ad – I think JWT is highly under rated. On his day he can and has beat the ‘top four’. He was involved in one of the best matches I have seen in person at the World Tour Final v Roger at the O2 so maybe I’m a bit biased.
Cooldude – JWT’s achievements as pointed out above include reaching a grand slam final in Australia, 2 semis at Wimbledon, 1 semi at the French open. He has won 1 masters series title and 9 other singles titles. Has been runner up at the world tour finals.
He was the first player to beat Federer from 2-0 in a grand slam.
He also has around 15 combined wins over the top four of Federer/ Nadal/ Djokovic and Murray.

  32. Iddy 10 years ago

Ad – do u think Ferrer will ever beat Federer? For a guy who consistently gives the other 3 a good game and has beaten them on more than 1 occasion, I still can’t believe how he is something like 12-0 v Fed.
At 4-1 I think Ferrer is worth a tenner

  33. Ad 10 years ago

Yeah i forgot to say, i think he is the actually the only player to have beaten all four of those guys. At his best he’s a threat to anyone, but there’s a reason he’s generally had little to no success against guys like Murray and Djokovic and hasn’t been able to consistently challenge for big titles. I’m also not sure he’s made the right coaching decisions as I really haven’t noticed him addressing/ improving the weak points in his game down the years.

  34. Iddy 10 years ago

Ad – don’t forget about JMDP, such a shame about his wrist injuries. Think they are probably the only 2 who have given all the big 4 good matches. Ferrer is Rogers bunny and Berdych is Rafa’s.

    • Ad 10 years ago

Yeh, massive shame about Delpo. Love his game, big fan of the guy, and really thought he could’ve pushed on and challenged for titles this year. I got so excited watching him post us open last season, he was phenomenal.

  35. Iddy 10 years ago

Ad – JMDP had an amazing match v Federer at WTF year which I was lucky enough to be at

  36. Ad 10 years ago

Ah you lucky devil. I was at the tour finals but didn’t get that match, it was the one I really wanted too! shame he won’t be there this year. murray, raonic, dimitrov could be there this time round which would add some interest. I’m hoping ferrer drops out of the top 8, I like his fight but it’s a losing battle on indoor hard against those guys!

  37. Ad 10 years ago

I had a match tonight so couldnt follow the tennis properly but managed to checked the Murray score at a changeover and it was 6-7, 6-4, 3-0 and i thought “brilliant”. Then i thought about covering by backing Tsonga and decided not to bother. What a poor decision that was!

A disappointing day then. Between sets I got my phone out again and put a desperate bet on Anderson to win a set/ Venus to win/ Makarova to win and Lopez to win a set. Pays 11/2 if it comes inn which will make up for Murray busting both my doubles, but even on the off chance it does, im really disappointed my tips on here were a let down. I didn’t recommend big stakes luckily as there were a few questions marks flying around, but hoping for a lot better tomorrow.

  38. cooldude 10 years ago

Ad what price was Tsonga before the tournament started?

    • Ad 10 years ago

Dude, i don’t know. I’d guess you could’ve got around 40/1 on Tsonga

  39. Iddy 10 years ago

Watched set 3 in Muzza match. He was 3-0 up and cruising and then lost 5 in a row.
He saved 2bps at 4-4 15-40 in set 2 so had won 5 in a row himself and on the road to a win.
    Good luck with the 5/fold.
Raals BTS saved me today….I got 8/5 on bts and over 2.5 as he was also confident on that

  40. Iddy 10 years ago

Got a late double on Makarova/ Kukushkin to hopefully give me a few pennies for new footy season tomorrow

  41. Ad 10 years ago

    thanks man.
well done on the btts, good old Raal. unfortunately ive been too busy to follow anyone else recently.

did Murray throw it away or did JO earn it?

My god, kevin anderson had dimitrov’s head on the block at 5-4, 40-15 and blew two match points in spectacular style. The second one was one of the easiest put aways you’ll ever see. Dimitrov was walking to the net! And he was walking to the deuce court at 4-5 down in the tie break after an Anderson ace, but a let was called. He then fell over after returning the Anderson first serve second time round, twisting his ankle, but Anderson blasted his next shot long. At 6-7 Anderson hits what looks like another ace, a let’s called again…..but Dimitrov challenges and its just out. Anderson hits his second serve long and its game, set, match to Grigor. Unbelievable stuff. I really feel for Anderson, but Dimitrov is a fantastic competitor and refused to give it up.

Kukushin’s a set up and Makarova’s cruising. A lopez set/win will help lick my Murray shaped wounds.

    • Mr Fixit 10 years ago

Ad, was watching in the office – Murray threw it away after being in total control.

    • Ad 10 years ago

Cheers for insight Mr F- makes me feel a little better in a strange way!

  42. Iddy 10 years ago

KUKUSHKIN has won and wandeveghe has gone out to 11/1 so have cashed out. I had the double at 1/1.
Agree with MrF 3-0 up and 15-0 on serve and then barely won a point for 5 games. Murray will definately feel he threw it away

  43. Iddy 10 years ago

Right off to bed but going to put a wee £5 on a Azarenka/ Ferrer double. They are playing my 2 favourite players in their respective tours, so its not a tip in any way!!!!!

  44. Ad 10 years ago

Well not a great day yesterday. Makarova and dimitrov won but Murray letting it slip from 3-0 in the third busted my doubles.
I suggested backing lopez to win @ 14/5 and also flagged up over 21.5 games in Dimitrov anderson as being very likely to come in too, but that paid just 1/2.

Haven’t had a chance to look at today’s matches properly yet but Lopez to win at least a set off Federer and Venus to take at least a set off Serena are possible options at 13/8 and 5/4 respectively.

  45. Ad 10 years ago

Who have you got Iddy et al?

  46. Ad 10 years ago

Oh, and not to be too hard on myself, I did tip dimitrov to win 2-1 v Anderson!

federer 2-1 v lopez is a best 7/2 with Ladbrokes and I like the look of that.

  47. Iddy 10 years ago

Not put anything on today Ad
But I would go Tsonga over Dimitrov and maybe add Radwanska for a double.
Not a great day today – with the way footy went.

  48. Ad 10 years ago

Venus has come from behind to take Serena down which brings in venus to win a set and is awesome in itself. Got in her for a couple of pounds in play which has paid of nicely too. I’m expecting any games over bets to come in in tsonga dimiitrov but other than that not gna touch any more tnnis till tomorrow

  49. Ad 10 years ago

Not much that catches the eye at the tennis today. A smallish punt on federer to beat Tsonga 2-1 @ 3/1 is all till in play/ tomorrow.
