DAY four is upon us already and the highlight of the week is the Ebor at 3.35 where I have picked out one at 33/1. In fact, I don't know what has come over me today because I have no less than 3 tips at 33/1. Let's hope one or two of them do the business.

1.55pm

Mondialiste looks the most likely winner of the first race for me but it's too short to be an attractive betting proposition.

2.25pm

I'm torn between two in this race. Sometimes that means you don't have a bet at all but sometimes, like in this case when they are both double figure prices, there is no harm in having a punt on both of them, especially when some forms are paying 5 places. GRAND VISIR has only had 4 runs, two of which have been wins so he looks like he might still have plenty of improvement in him.

The second one is DOMINATING who has relished the step up in trip recently and although he has gone up in the weights as a result there might be more still to come. He also has a decent apprentice taking off 5 lb which is useful and I don't think he should be as big as 33/1.

3.00pm

I am really interested in STAXTON in this race. It's a massive step up into Group 2 company here which is an unknown for the horse but that's the same for most of these two year olds. If he hadn't been beaten by Hey Jonesy two starts ago this lad would be unbeaten and Hey Jonesy franked that form in my opinion with an excellent 3rd place on Wednesday here when he made mincemeat of all those on his side of the track.

As for Staxton himself, his win last time at Haydock was solid, with the field pretty well strung out in behind him. I think he is too big a price.

3.35pm

The Ebor is tricky this year, as is often the case. The one I am chancing is LORD YEATS who is a son of the great Yeats who loved a long distance flat race like this. This is a first step up into what you would call a ‘staying race' having previously had a real mixed bag of form over middle distances.

There are a lot of question marks but this could be the making of him and we are being compensated for the doubts with a nice big price so it's worth a small each way in the hope that he can emulate his famous father to some extent.

4.50pm

Another big field and another 33/1 shot. The stable mate of Dominating is BEARDWOOD and it could be an incredible day for his owners if my hunch is right about these two. The young apprentice Richard Oliver is up again and his 5 lb claim might just be enough to make Beardwood competitive off this handicap mark. He has been there or thereabouts of this mark, particularly at Newmarket in July with similarly conditions to today's race where he was third. I think he has a big race in him and hopefully it's today.

  • 3.00pm – Staxton – 2pt each way at 14/1 with Bet365
  • 3.35pm – Lord Yeats – 1pt each way at 33/1 with Paddy Power (5 places)
  • 4.50pm – Beardwood – 1pt each way at 33/1 with SkyBet (5 places)
