IT'S Grand National day and whilst the main focus is one the big race there is also a good undercard. There are a couple of races where I don’t have a strong fancy but that will give you a chance to recharge your glasses and catch your breath on what should be a brilliant day of racing

1.45pm

A belter of a race to get us started and I think that the consistent RED INDIAN is surely due to get his head in front soon. He ran well at Cheltenham and this extra distance and ground should be no problem at all for him. He is very lightly raced for a 6 year old and I think he was a good bit of improvement to come.

2.25pm

I have no strong opinion in this race with On The Blind Side and Black Op the two shorter priced choices at the top of the market. I don’t see any particular value bet and I’m not too confident in the favourite’s chances so I’m giving it a swerve.

3.00pm

Petit Mouchoir should win this easily enough against a field that isn’t great for a Grade 1 race to be perfectly honest. I can’t advise a bet at 8/15 or similar.

3.40pm

A really competitive handicap so I’m looking for something that is going to improve for one reason or another. This is the first try over a 3 mile trip for OLD GRANGEWOOD and there is a strong chance that it will bring out some improvement in him so he is my each way choice at a double figure price.

4.20pm

SAM SPINNER can’t make the same mistake as he did at Cheltenham where Joe Colliver got the pace all wrong out in front and let it turn into a sprint finish. This track will be more suitable and he can put them all to the sword with a better ride this time.

5.15pm

The big one. Check out my horse-by-horse guide for my idea of the likely winner.

6.20pm

The final race of the festival and it’s a race for conditional jockeys and amateurs so your choice of jockey is important. There are two that I’m very strong on but unfortunately they are the two at the shortest prices so I am clearly not the only one who fancies them. Michael’s Mount for Ian Williams with young James Bowen inntje saddle is an obvious choice and will probably go of favourite. You ignore Ian Williams at your peril these days so although he isn’t a huge price I may have a wee saver on him before the off, particular if his price drifts a little bit. The main selection though is SCHEU TIME for James Nash and ridden by Katy Walsh. Looked really impressive winning at Naas last time out and the ground will be no problem at all. Looks like the horse could be well ahead of its handicap mark.

Good luck to everyone and enjoy the racing!
