The Voice of Value: 12/1 shot can fire us to St Leger glory

A CRACKING week last Saturday with Chilean (8/1) and Suedois (9/2) both winning for us and Time To Study bagging a place.

Today is the famous St Leger at Doncaster, the last English ‘Classic' race of the flat season. I have one that I fancy in the big race and a few others on the rest of today's card.

2.25 Doncaster

I think NATHRA has been knocking on the door since her belated return in July this year and with the good to soft ground here and some weight concessions from those ahead of her in the betting I think she is ready to pounce. I was surprised to see that she wasn't closer to favourite and the current prices available look like good value to me.

3.35 Doncaster

The St Leger looks to be an extremely competitive race this year with no obvious standout although on ratings you would perhaps say that Aiden O'Brien's Capri, winner of the Irish Derby, should be favourite. He hasn't been seen since July which would be a slight concern for me if looking to back him at a short price though. The one that I think could be remarkable value is REKINDLING for O'Brien's son Joseph.

The horse looks ideally suited by this longer trip, having gone down to the impressive Order of St George in a Leger trial last month by about 4 lengths whilst carrying a bizarre weight penalty. There is no Order of St George today who absolutely hacked up in the Irish St Leger last week and I think Rekindling is overpriced now that he seems to have found the right distance to run at and has hit some form.

6.15 Musselburgh

We go up to Musselburgh for my next fancy in a pretty low grade race to be honest but HARBOUR PATROL is all set for a win. Three starts ago he was very unlucky having virtually fallen out of the stalls before rallying to take third place. His rating continues to drop and he is more than capable of winning from this handicap mark with the no-nonsense Silvestre De Sousa taking the ride.
