IT’S a sister act at Flushing Meadows tonight as Serena Williams puts her history bid on the line against older sibling Venus in the US Open quarter-finals.

Serena is just three wins from completing the calendar Grand Slam and leads the head-to-head 15-11, including a last-16 victory at this year’s Wimbledon.

Serena is huge favourite at 2-15 with Betfair to triumph and 1-2 at Marathonbet for a 2-1 success while BetVictor make Venus a 15-2 chance and over 2.5 sets pays 3-1 at bet365.

In the day’s other match Kristina Mladenovic takes on Roberta Vinci while in the men’s quarter-finals defending champ Marin Cilic goes in as 13-9 underdog at Marathonbet against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (4-6, William Hill).

England’s cricketers are out to avoid ODI series defeat to Australia today when the sides lock horns at Old Trafford in the third match. The Aussies have won the first two and are 8-11 at William Hill to make it three in a row while the hosts are chalked up at 6-5 by Ladbrokes.

Mark Cavendish and Bradley Wiggins are among the names competing in cycling’s Tour of Britain which reaches stage three today and there’s also the likes of Major League Baseball for the US sports fans.

Good luck with your bets and post your sporting tips and thoughts here.

Wow. Kevin Anderson, take a now son. A History making and career best win for the big man. 7-0 tiebreak to seal it. Incredible. Knew Murray wouldn’t go all the way, but thought he’d at least earn the right to lose to Roger again.

  2. dee 1 year ago

absolute quality match that was Ad 😉

  3. Ad 1 year ago

Yep! And though he’ll be tired, Kev has beaten Stan the last 4 times they’ve played I think, so a semi final place is a serious possibility!

  4. max 1 year ago

Murray is pathetic, a fourth set decider to stay in a Major and he loses 7-0, is embarrassing. Fed or Djok wudnt lose 7-0 in a decider against that guy. Happy as I bet Fed to win it, but was hoping for a Muzza – Fed semi final

    • Profile photo of Mr Fixit

max, he looked drained after a run of tough games but you can’t take it away from Anderson.
No more late nights at the office. I hope you all buy the Record in the morning to read all about it.
      Goodnight all.

  5. Ad 1 year ago

Gone for fed most aces at 11/1. Come on !

  6. Ad 1 year ago

And yes ^ no doubt money down the drain!

Fed in 3 with 2 tiebreaks is my prediction. But I’m going to have nightmares of waking up to a shock 7-6, 6-7, 7-6, 7-6 defeat

  7. Ad 1 year ago

On to tomorrow- I can see the logic in maybe making Azarenka slight favourite against Halep, given possible fatigue and thigh strapping. but I’m still not sold on that.

2/1 is a big price to beat someone who really still hasn’t proven their back to near their best. If Halep bad enough energy to push and put her under pressure for three sets I fancy Halep

  8. max 1 year ago

Anderson played well, and he volleyed very well but to lose 7-0 in a tie-breaker I think is pathetic, again I honestly cant see Fed or Djokovic losing 7-0 in a set to stay in a major. Venus wont be the one to end her sista chance of history, serena win for me probably 2-0. you could half your stake and take 2-1

  9. Ellis 1 year ago

What are the thoughts on tsonga cilic?

  10. PumaDrifter 1 year ago

Tsonga cilic over 3.5 …I just cant pick a winner here. And a possible breaker in the match.

  11. PumaDrifter 1 year ago

Serena 2-0 and Serena 2-1 yeah…if I was Venus id play at 60%,level knowing im older and my sister has a chance to write history.

  12. Ad 1 year ago

Federer in 3 with two tiebreak sets- now that’s at I call a prediction

Following on from my post yesterday on the LSU game,

The Mississippi State Bulldogs are 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS in their last five home games against SEC opponents. Also, in the last 2 games that the Bulldogs started as home underdogs, the Bulldogs won the game SU (Auburn 38-23 on a 2.5 point handicap and Ole Miss on a 3.5 point handicap)

Will the week 1 “no contest” hurt LSU come this weekend? Some says not, but I think it will. In the 10 plays that LSU ran before the game was washed out in week 1, LSU started 6 true freshman, with QB Brandon Harris (Sophomore) making only his 2nd career start and throwing only 2 passes. Anyone who plays the game will tell you that chemistry between QBs and WRs are just as important as physical attributes. No matter how good camp goes, you only really start building chemistry on game day when WRs are being jammed at the line and QBs making reads whilst being rushed.

Fancy more stats? In Harris’s first career start against Auburn, the boy went 3 for 14 before the tigers suffered the worse loss under HC Les Mile’s tenure.

Being a psychology undergrad, I have also decided to venture down the path of how a cancelled game can have an effect on the LSU players. Yes, LSU players will be pumped, but anyone who plays American football HAS to be pumped, they might play harder or even better with the added adrenaline, but they will also be more likely to make mistakes, especially with 6 true freshman on the field playing in a rawdy environment that is Starkvile. LSU has never really been known for it’s discipline and penalties kill teams. The more eager you are to play ball, the higher the chances you will be offside or false start or even infringement.

I am going to have a little dabble on Mississippi State to cover the handicap of +4 at 10/11 and will put some shillings down on Missisippi State to win outright when 365 at the prices up. (6/4 at PP)

Super single is Cilic to win.

    1.3 at B.V

Tsonga is inconsistent whilst Cilic isn’t Cilic has further purpose because its his opportunity to defend his title back to back,I expect the Croat to struggle but to ultimately win the match. Over 40.5 games is also a good shout considering the gravity of the match plus in view of the fact both guys over the course of the match will most likely take a set each.

  26. Felix 1 year ago

Seemed like the size of the court helped Anderson last night. Got the feeling Andy wasn’t very comfortable on it. Did look small. Anderson has a decent chance against wawrinka as stan doesn’t seem to cope with his game all that well

    • Profile photo of Mr Fixit
      Mr Fixit 1 year ago

Felix, court’s are always the same size but seemingly he doesn’t like that arena as the crowd are right on top of you.
Just an excuse – sometimes the opponent is just better. Be interesting to see how well Anderson recovers from a gruelling contest.

  27. Ad 1 year ago

Felix- yep. Stans weakest attribute is probably his return of serve, so when Andersons serving well he’s always in with a chance. The fact he’s taken him down four times in a row is a good indicator of the matchup favouring the big man. Best of five is a little different, and this is new territory for Anderson, but Stan hasn’t looked that imperious since the French, and it’s a wonderful chance for the big man.

Fish- cilic and Tsonga is hard to call, especially as I haven’t seen either play this tournament. However, Cilic has won their last three meetings 2-0. It was also this stage last year that he caught fire and blew everyone away on his route the the title. He must be confident coming into this. So I’m edging towards him, however Tsonga hasn’t lost a set yet and that’s suggests he’s going to be tough to get past. It may come down to how inspired Cilic is.

Finally- as for ‘magic’ Malcolm, in surprised it’s taken him this long to get banned. If he’s not being offensive he’s being arrogant and insisting people follow him, often to the sum of thousands of pounds. And Ellis, if you need to be told for future reference whether racist comments are okay on here, you’ve should take a long hard look at yourself!

    • Profile photo of Mr Fixit
      Mr Fixit 1 year ago

Ad, re magic malcolm he was banned right away.
We can’t stop him coming back with a different IP and when he did he was banned again.
Some people have commented saying they were surprised he wasn’t banned right away – he was.
Admin could also report this type of abuse to the police.
On this occasion they haven’t done so but that’s an option any time we see a racist comment.
Ellis’s reply was also noted and he has also been banned before.

  28. Ad 1 year ago

Mr F- fair play. I wasn’t expressing surprise he wasn’t banned quick enough in response to this latest comment, I just meant in general – I’d had enough of him after his very first post!

I think Felix must have meant the areas behind the baselines and around the sides of the court are tighter on Armstrong that on Ashe, the dimensions of the court itself are standard as you say.

  29. Felix 1 year ago

Yeah, sorry, the area surrounding the court. I guess it wouldn’t have made much difference if your opponent is playing insane tennis.

I for one didn’t think Anderson had it in him.

  30. Aye Right 1 year ago

Thank God Malcolm isn’t allowed on this site anymore. Respect is key to all relationships with people , he doesn’t convey any.

  31. Ad 1 year ago

Neither did I Felix. But I guess that match against Novak at Wimbledon showed what he can do against the very best defensive players when he’s really on top of his game. Novak ground him down and stepped up his intensity and consistency to draw the errors that got him back into the match on that occasion. Murray couldnt lift himself to that level.
I don’t see fatigue as a real excuse as he has no reason to be especially tired, and Anderson was clearly conserving energy and praying It didn’t go to a 5th. I actually think, despite the likes of Andrew Castle constantly banging on about how wonderful he is and that he’s playing the best tennis of his career, that there’s a worrying chink in Murray’s mental armour that rears its head now and then, in a way it doesn’t with Novak and Roger.

  32. Felix 1 year ago

James Ward currently 5-1 down and putting in 2.5% effort against some guy ranked 400 odd places in the world.

  33. Ad 1 year ago

It would be very good for the GB Davis cup team if Bedene was allowed to play. Think Wardy’s days could be numbered anyway.

      Mr Fixit 1 year ago

Ad, Ward and Edmund are both in the team.
I don’t know when or if Bedene will become eligible.

  34. Ad 1 year ago

I wish I’d been alert to the fact ward was playing today. His losing streak is embarrassing and would’ve beenan great upset shout

  35. Felix 1 year ago

He’s basically tanked it. Two very comfortable sets for Ivashka. That was basically free money.

  36. Felix 1 year ago

So edmund’s replaced Ward in the Davis cup team. He obviously already knew and played like his head was elsewhere.

  37. Mattyg123 1 year ago

Vinci chances against mladenivic in the +2.5 handicap? Thanks

  38. Ad 1 year ago

Ahhhh, I missed that. What explains his poor form before he got dropped though?!

So basically Andy Murray has to beat tomic and (possibly) Hewitt and win the doubles for us to win, as Edmund will lose both his.

Not sure he’s got enough in the tank for that!

  39. Ad 1 year ago

Though that would of course be the same sceneario if ward was playing. Good to give some new blood a chance. Wards potential has been fulfilled. Edmund could be a half decent tour player one day.

  40. Felix 1 year ago

There’s bad form and then there’s purposely not trying to compete. Quite shameful.

Yeah, I don’t think Edmund has enough in his game (yet).

  41. Ad 1 year ago

Matty g- good chance. Would be no surprise to see her win the match. But mladenovic has enough game to win a set 6-1 or 6-2 if she’s really on it the way they match up, so I’ts not a bet I massively like.

Having said that, Mladenovic is erratic enough to drop a set by those scores too, so I think I’ll just keep my eyes open for a nice price on someone behind in play!

  42. Ad 1 year ago

I’d probably go for over 21.5 games at the same price. Seems a low enough total for me

  43. Mattyg123 1 year ago

Thanks Ad I stuck a point on Vinci +2.5. Had 2 points on over 3.5 sets in the Murray game last night. Didn’t expect it to go the way it did. Anything that interests you tonight?

  44. Ad 1 year ago

Ah yes, so they are. The 5 man team gets cut down to 4 I believe 24 hours before the tie though.

    • Profile photo of Mr Fixit
      Mr Fixit 1 year ago

Ad, that’s right – they will drop one. Edmund’s problem is no Davis Cup experience while Ward is out of form.
Disappointing to see Kyrgios dropped – the Glasgow fans would have loved to see his antics.

  45. Ad 1 year ago

Now maybe time to back mladenovic for a few quid. She has a chance, but vinci just about earning enough errors out of her arm

I think they will go with Edmund, but we shall see. No experience as you say. And Wards played his part in the past.

    • Profile photo of Mr Fixit
      Mr Fixit 1 year ago

Ad, talk is Edmund because he’s a better clay court player and if they reach the final it could be on clay so it will give Edmund some experience.
Bottom line is as usual Andy Murray must win his 2 singles and Jamie Murray and whoever takes the doubles for a 3-2 win.

  48. Ad 1 year ago

Mladenovic broke back, broke again to go ahead, but then threw some double faults and rubbish together to give it right back. A classic women’s match on our hands!

  53. Ad 1 year ago

A mixture of basic errors, double faults and great clucth tennis, but in the end mladenovic gets broken thanks the the formeost of the three. Take something off your first serve you fool! What is she thinking smashing that many first serves into the net at full throttle given thr doubles that have been flowing

  54. Ad 1 year ago

Weird how mladenovic’ Injuries get worse after she loses a point or a game.

  55. Mattyg123 1 year ago

I got lucky with the Vinci bet, she could easily have lost that. Last bet of the day 5 points on over 3.5 sets in a he cilic v tsonga match at 1/2 surely easy money Ad?

  56. Ad 1 year ago

surely we won’t see lightning strike twice with back to back US open titles for Marin Cilic?!?

Very likely not, but im happy to see him putting himself in the mix, for now at least!

  57. Ad 1 year ago

Sorry Matty, only just seen your comment about the Tsonga cilic match. Hindsight advice isn’t very useful here, but i would never recommend a lump on over sets, not at 1/2 anyway. Given the way momentum can work in tennis, and how if one players very slightly off in a tight matchup they should lose every set they play against the player who’s slightly more on it, it’s a risky way to go for little reward.

  58. Ad 1 year ago

Small bet to get the NFL ball rolling.

Tom Brady was the talk of the off season with the deflation scandal but last week had his 4 match suspension upheld and will be a man on a mission in the opener against Pittsburgh. Rob Gronkowski is one of the hardest men to cover in the game and probably the best if not second best Tight End behind Jimmy Graham. His speed and size is a match up that nobody can handle and is 4/7 to score a TD on its own. He scored 15 TD’s in 18 games last year and is probably Bradys best target in the red zone but can also break a tackle or 5 and take it to the house for 50 yards. The Steelers will be without two big players. Running back Le’Veon Bell who is easily a top 5 Running Back, and Martavis Bryant who can take the top off any defense, so Antonio Brown is going to have his work cut out. Pittsburgh also lost their veteran safety to retirement in the way of long locked Troy Polumalu and they weren’t the best secondary last season even with him, ranking 27th overall in passing defense.

Think you meant Brady had his 4 match suspension lifted there Jordan! And don’t forget about Maurkice Pouncey too, the lump is probably one of the best if not the best centres in the game, not only his blocking will be missed but also his experience as he is usually the one pointing the fingers and picking up blitz’es, so there will be added responsibilities on Big Ben’s shoulder!

    • Jordan 1 year ago

Haha I think he is too chief but some might have a different opinion.

  69. Ad 1 year ago

Matty- Halep, cilic, Anderson was the combination of bets I suggested earlier, and Anderson and Halep are up tomorrow.

The worry with Halep, and the main reason I imagine she is as long as 15/8, is that she had a slight injury/ fatigue issue in her last match. But hoping she’s used today to rest up and has recovered by tomorrow. If she’s near full fitness this is a great price.

Anderson I like too, and could well be worth a single @ 13/10. Anderson to win 3-1 @ 5/1 is tempting as well.

I may also have a go on Pennetta to upset Kvitova @ nearly 3/1, but that could very well fall flat – it’s all about Petra. But Flavia has been impressive as she often is here and can take down Kvitova in a similar way to how she handled Stosur, but not if Kvitovas at her best.
