Racing: Johnb’s Grand National Tips

THE BIGGEST race of them all takes place at Aintree on Saturday and here are Johnb’s early thoughts.

The Last Samurai

Not many horses go into a National proven over the distance but the way The Last Samurai won over 3m 2f in the Grimthorpe at Doncaster suggests the extra mile won’t be a problem. He travels well and does switch off early meaning it’s a lot easier to get the distance, he jumps beautifully although a little slow at a couple last time he still cleared them well.

The most impressive part of his last run was the way he jumped the last 3 fences with the jockey really asking the horse for big jumps at a fast pace, even at the last fence with the race already won David Bass could have eased him over the last which a lot of jockeys would have done but he really kicked the horse into it.

Winning the National is all about placing your horse well in the race and more importantly getting the horse to switch off which is why The Last Samurai will be my main tip.

He is due to go up in the weights after the race and the jockey says he jumps well, stays well and is well in at the weights.

Sir Des Champs

His problem last year was the horse didn’t settle so did struggle late on but a year on he can improve if getting switched off early.

I said I was going to put up a third tip and this one is my second best for the National behind Samurai and in front of Shutthefrontdoor.

This horse is the best handicapped horse in the race in my opinion and I think Willie Mullins has planned Sir Des Champs and the National for a while now which is why he didn’t go to Cheltenham.

I just can’t understand why Brian Cooper doesn’t want to ride him preferring First Lieutenant or Rule The World.

Watching the Topham yesterday, i thought the fences had a very large layer of loose birch which brough down quite a few horses, looks like you will need to be on a horse which jumps very well. Whats your thoughts.
