CELTIC beat both my bets on Wednesday night – or at least Kolo Toure was to blame for the treble going down.
The experienced defender made two howlers as the Scots lost 2-0 at home to Borussia Monchengladbach to all but end their European hopes this season.
It was a huge disappointment for the Hoops after their superb display against Man City in the previous game. But the Germans, despite injury problems, were the better side and took advantage of Toure’s traumas.
My Super Single was Moussa Dembele to score but it was an off night for the striker who had looked so good this season.
Tonight it’s all about the Europa League – or some call it the dreaded Europa League.
Ties include Man United v Fenerbahce, Dundalk v Zenit and Inter Milan v Southampton. Man United’s struggled to beat Zorya at Old Trafford and three days after a big game at Liverpool much will depend on Jose Mourinho’s line-up.
Mourinho says he’ll play a “strong side” but what that means I don’t know. Fenerbahce striker Robin van Persie is 3-1 at bet365 to score on his return to Old Trafford.
Inter haven’t treated the tournament seriously so Saints could get a result if they go close to full strength. They are a biggest 41-18 with Marathonbet and what a strange price that is.
The Mauro Icardi controversy – when the skipper said he wanted his club’s Ultras killed – is casting a shadow over the club and home fans cheered his missed penalty at the weekend.
I’ll consider Southampton or Southampton not to lose once I see their starting line-up – and hopefully I’ll be about to put up the advice.
The Super Single I’ve decided to do is Zenit and over 2.5 match goals. It’s probably the biggest game in Dundalk’s history – with star-studded Zenit the visitors to Dublin.
The Irish side have exceeded all expectations and picked up four points from their first two games but this looks too tough a test if the Russians field their main men and they’re no bigger than 1-3 at William Hill.
It looks like all of Zenit’s big stars have travelled to Ireland and if Artem Dzyuba starts I’ll be on him to score first at 4-1 with Paddy Power.
I’ve looked at as much teams news as possible and here are some key points – Nice will be without Mario Balotelli at Red Bull, Schalke have many players missing including Choupo-Moting at Krasnodar, Sassuolo have no Domenico Berardi at Rapid Vienna and Celta Vigo will be minus John Guidetti and Hernandez.
An interesting stat is the fact Roma skipper Francesco Totti plays his 100th European tie for the club at home to Austria Vienna. He has 99 goals for the club under coach Luciano Spalletti – Totti is 13-10 at Winner to net his 100th for Spalletti on his 100th game. I can’t resist it and that’s a 1pt Super Single.
Feyenoord and Ajax meed in the Dutch League on Sunday so both could rest players ahead of that big game.
Having considered everything I’ve come up with two 1pt trebles – and risking 5pts in total on a Europa League night is a lot for me so I hope at least for one or two winners.
Hapoel Beer Sheva are strong at home and should beat Sparta Prague and same goes for Steaua at home to Swiss second-tier side Zurich. They are both good prices so add Roma to complete the treble.
Team news has put me off sides such as Nice and Sassuolo scoring on the road although they’ll probably still do so. My btts is treble is therefore simply stats led.
