Oct 11: Johnb’s Racing Tips & Chat

IT was close but no cigar for Johnb on Monday with a second and a third place for his tips.

He’s now 9.12pts down for the month and has 5pts in total staked on Tuesday.

Johnb’s Tuesday Tips

Leicester 4:45
Bonnie Arlene 6-1 William hill

Musselburgh 4:55
Napoleon Solo 9-2 NB William hill

Wolverhampton 8:15
Misu Pete 9-2 NAP William hill

Also 3 x 0.5pt doubles & 1 x 0.25pt Eachway treble

Antepost Tips

2000 Guineas 2017
CHURCHILL 20-1 (now 8-1) bet365

2017 Derby
CHURCHILL 33-1 (now 20-1) racebets

2000 Guineas 2017

Blue Point 14-1 racebets

Johnb says: “I have already advised Churchill for next year’s 2000 Guineas & Derby – he has been really impressive this season and my view is he will get even better next year.

“Blue Point on the other hand is harder to call for how he will progress next year. If he trains on then in my view it’s a straight fight between Blue Point & Churchill but in the Derby Churchill is the only horse for me – he gives me the same excitement as Golden Horn did.

“But to answer my question earlier the most impressive horse I have seen this year is BLUE POINT with Churchill and Annie Power a close second and third.”

If you backed every Graham gibbons mount in the last 5 years to a level £1 stake, you would now be £695 down.
Are other jockeys returns this shocking ?
I did a random search on his stats as he rides one of johnb’s tips tomorrow.
Is this the norm that following low grade jockeys religiously is not advised.

    • Profile photo of elvis parsley
      elvis parsley 1 year ago

Saying that, I think Napoleon solo is good value with gibbons on tomorrow in a pretty dire race.

      • Profile photo of Johnb
        Johnb 1 year ago

I wouldn’t advise following any jockey blind, the profit/loss stats are pretty useless as they just tell us not to back every mount a jockey has.
You pointed out Graham Gibbons but that doesn’t actually tell us if he is a good or bad jockey, over the same 5 year period other jockeys are
        Ryan Moore -£442
        Frankie Dettori -£352
        Paul Hanagan -£530
Even looking at a jockeys number of wins doesn’t tell us if they are good or bad,
We have to look deeper into the stats and look at each ride separately to see how that ride compared to the horses odds,

Everywhere I look I see quotes of Ryan Moore the best jockey ever, but does riding the best horses make him the best jockey?
Lulu Stanford came out with a good quote when she said “it’s too easy to sit there and look pretty when you are on the best animal but it teaches you nothing”

Going back to Gibbo, I still rate him very highly and bigger trainers are starting to go to him again, like Haggas and Stoute,
I keep saying Gibbons isn’t just a jockey, he is a horseman and to me he doesn’t have any flaws in his riding, he can settle a horse which is important as it saves more energy for the finish, he can read a race well as he knows where to have his horse in the race, he is an excellent judge of pace and he is one of the strongest jockeys in a finish I have seen

Elvis Wish I was only 695 down after 5 years betting, I was more than that last week.😜

Elvis you seem on the same level as me with the horses…pretty clueless! I’m trying my best to learn off these great guys also. I found out yesterday it isn’t as easy as i first thought. Johnb you don’t half seem to know your stuff! Impressive!! :)

You would need to be daft to just follow a jockey blind or “religiously” anyway.
The jockeys mentioned above do help in my confidence when backing a horse but its one of the least factors I take into consideration.

dragoon hard race with so many front runners who could leave themselves for one to swoop late like Poyle Vinnie 9/1 or Humidor 9/1 very small stake race but may be good to watch.

@dragoon if your going to back it win only if you look at it’s form it wins or doesn’t place most times and seems to dislike small fields hope that helps.

What about the 2000 champion Kevin darley ?
How the f#@k did he win it.

Unlucky with the 2 seconds johnb, seems to sum up today’s racing. Sometimes you get a first impression from first glance that the days cards are [email protected]@t, today was such a day.

I fancied Napoleon solo myself, and ooohd and aaahd between 2 longsdon nags as my daily single, I chose Hannibal the great over sarpech.
Sarpech won and Hannibal was a non runner.
Its enough to make you weep.

Samantha, thank you for the ‘clueless’ compliment, not!.
If you read my piece I didn’t say I backed gibbons religiously, was merely pointing out the perils of following one jockey .

If you backed Lulu blind this year you’d be in profit, not many rides of course.

        • Profile photo of elvis parsley
          elvis parsley 1 year ago

          Aye, spot on.
If you backed here career 121 rides at £1 a go, you would now be +£25.
          Fair play to her.
Take it she has had a few big price wins to boost her totals.

        • Profile photo of Johnb
          Johnb 1 year ago

Yeah she has had her fair share of injuries but in her two seasons she is averaging a win or place every three rides which is good going
17 wins and 22 places from 121 rides.
This year 14 wins and 14 places from 96 rides isn’t bad with all the big priced runners she gets
