I WAS a Wealdstone goal away from landing Monday’s Top Treble – and it was disappointing to miss out.
Curzon won easily and Poland v Slovenia always looked like staying under 2.5 goals so I waited and waited for Wealdstone to strike after visitors Bath netted in the first half.
And just when I’d given up hope my phone pinged and there it was on live score – Wealdstone 1, Bath 1.
I was writing my intro in my head when I checked to make sure Poland finished 1-1 and there it was – Wealdstone 0, Bath 1.
A quick check revealed Wealdstone’s “goal” in injury time had been ruled offside so that was frustrating and it must be the worst way to lose a bet, even if it was just for 1pt.
On Tuesday there are 12 FA Cup first-round replays and I’ve check stats and form in the RFO before deciding what to do. Team news is of course vital and many sides will be weakened.
Most of these games should end in home wins but sides such as Crewe and Notts County have major injury problems while Wimbledon will make sweeping changes for the visit of off-form Bury.
My Super Single is a double on Newport and Swindon who both recorded excellent results at the weekend. Newport beat Carlisle 2-0 to hand their visitors a first defeat of the season and should see off Alfreton at the second attempt.
Graham Westley has come in and immediately improved the Welsh side who are unbeaten in five.
Add Swindon who have had a similar bounce from the arrival of Tim Sherwood as director of football. I’m never sure what this job entails but with Sherwood on board a 3-0 weekend win against Charlton was a great start. They should follow up with a cup win against an Eastleigh side with one victory in five.
Apart from Europe there are World Cup qualifiers on many continents including Argentina v Colombia, Chile v Uruguay and Peru v Brazil in the evening. There are friendlies such as England v Spain, Italy v Germany and Northern Ireland v Croatia but I’m unlikely to be tempted.
Argentina are struggling to qualify and need a result at home to Colombia. I’d prefer to go with both to score as the Argentines have conceded eight in their last four – to Brazil, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela.
The other games are tough to call and while Brazil are on a brilliant run with five World Cup wins in a row with 15 goals scored their last defeat was at home to Peru so again I’m on both to score.
My treble is started by both to score at Solihull v Yeovil which was 2-2 when they met in the original tie and there should be goals again.
As far as the friendlies go some bets may look good after teams are revealed. England and especially Spain will be weakened and the same goes for Italy and Germany although the Italians look less up for this than their visitors.
Croatia are missing most of their stars in Belfast, Slovakia have sent a weakened side to Austria and same goes for Romania in Russia. I’m leaving the friendlies alone but good luck if you decide to have a go.
