Mexico v Sweden

Live on BBC Two. Kick-off 3pm.

WHILST everyone will be focusing on Germany getting the job done against South Korea, the more intriguing match in Group F will be in Yekaterinburg where a draw for Mexico will be good enough to send them through as group winners. However….

There is a scenario where the Central Americans could be knocked out, despite winning their first two games. A Sweden win coupled with a Germany win leaves all three teams on six points. In that scenario, and if Sweden win by two or more the Mexicans will be sent packing. So things really are on a knife-edge and more drama looks guranteed.

Mexico were resilient against Germany and devastating at times against South Korea. Their pace on the the counter attack has the potential to cause problems for any team in the tournament and they've plenty of potential goalscorers in the squad.

If you only saw Sweden's first half performance against Germany then you'd think them unlucky not to take anything from the game but they were penned in to their own half by the World Champions in the second 45 and succumbed to a sickening winner with the last kick of the ball. The big question is whether they can pick themselves up from that devastating climax.

My worry for Sweden is that they don't have the firepower that'll see them get out of the group, nevermind beyond the last 16. In previous years they've been able to look to the likes of Henrik Larsson and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to nick a goal. Only Marcus Berg and Oli Toivonen are in to double figures for Sweden, with 31 goals between them.

That said, they simply have to go for it against Mexico, which may also leave them vulernable at the back, and I think both sides will get on the scoresheet.

Mexico may well try to play out a draw so don't be surprised if they pick up a card or two for time-wasting. With that in mind 12/1 on their keeper, Guillermo Ochoa being carded looks big.

The first goalscorer market looks a bit trickier. There's a case to be made for a handful of Mexico players but they could make changes, whereas with Sweden there are fewer obvious chances so I like the 16/1 on penalty taker Granqvist finding the net for the second time in the tournament.

“There is a scenario where the Central Americans could be knocked out” …… erm, Sweden is in Europe and Mexico is in North America … Which Central Americans are you talking about?

To be fair it’s quite confusing. While Mexico is on the continent of North America in footballing terms they are under the CONCACAF banner.
That of course stands for The Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football.
Mexico borders Central America and football-wise they are often described as Central Americans.
Sweden as you say is definitely in Europe.

any win of Germany and a win 1-0 for Sweden, what does it means?

    • Mr Fixit 6 years ago

1-0 Sweden puts them above Mexico on h2h. Any German win apart from 1-0 would put them above Mexico in that case.
1-0 Germany and 1-0 Sweden would mean a 3-way tie – maybe bookings would come into it.
