May 17: Johnb’s Racing Tips & Chat

MRF_RacingTips_Racebets

JOHNB’S 6-4 double-stake tip did the trick on Monday as Upavon neck by a neck.

His other pick couldn’t complete the double so it was a 1pt profit for the day and May is now a 12.625pt loss.

Johnb’s Tuesday tips have now been added and let’s hear your tips and chat.

Johnb’s Tuesday Tips

Lingfield 3:25
Cryptic 11-8 NAP/NB racebets (double stake)

Nottingham 3:50
Balmusette 6-1 racebets

Double
Cryptic & Balmusette 15.63-1 racebets

Staying clear of Newcastle today as it’s the new all weather surface so you don’t know what it will be racing like.

As mentioned on yesterdays racing thread, it’s always disappointing to get the Antepost value only for the horse to get pulled out but as I say “The horse comes first”

So Mi Dar: John Gosden-trained filly to miss Oaks at Epsom

Second favourite So Mi Dar will miss next month’s Oaks at Epsom as she is lame, says trainer John Gosden.

The impressive winner of the Musidora Stakes at York, owned by Lord Lloyd Webber, was 9-4 for the Classic on 3 June.

Minding, trained by Aidan O’Brien, is now the 1-2 favourite for the Oaks.

“It’s a bit of a bombshell I’m afraid but the horse comes first. We have to do what is right by the filly,” said Gosden.

“She may well come right in 10 days but at this stage you cannot go to any major race. She is not right.”

The four-length York win, under Frankie Dettori, was a third career triumph for unbeaten Epsom Derby Trial winner So Mi Dar, whose dam Dar Re Mi won three Group One races.

    Analysis

BBC horse racing correspondent Cornelius Lysaght:

What a pity, but this probably isn’t serious and actually John Gosden thinks it’s even possible she could be right as rain again before the Oaks. However, a) he can’t be sure, b) he certainly doesn’t want to rush a filly of this quality, and c) he wouldn’t be keen to send her on such an important assignment having had such a setback, and anyway all kinds of glittering prizes, notably the Irish Oaks on 16 July, lie ahead.

Mao Chinn Tire out at Kempton again in the 3.50
Any danger to your pick John? Seems to be a bit of a course specialist although top weight today and bit further than last time out.

Just think Balmusette is handicapped too low as a horse rated 129 over hurdles makes a flat rating of 55 about 20lbs to 30lbs too low

For example the horse I had a share in was rated 77 on the flat and 119 in national hunt
Horses can be better at either flat or jumps but some can be just as good at both, normally you would say a horses flat rating would be about 40lb to 50lb lower than their jumps rating but you do get some exceptions

Newcastle’s new all weather track has seen around 40 horses trained by Karl Burke, Ruth Carr, Ann Duffield, Michael Dods, Brian Ellison and Richard Fahey take part in gallops over trips ranging from 5f to 1m4f

Trainers and jockeys have said it hasn’t bedded in yet and is a bit dead but it looks like it will suit all horses,
They also described it as going to be the fairest all weather track as its not too quick but not too slow
The Tapeta surface is the same as Wolverhampton but not as sharp, Newcastle is a galloping track with big sweeping bends out the back which could suit front runners
Paul Mulrennan has also said that the best horse will always win here.

My advice is not to bet at Newcastle for the first few meetings till we get a clearer picture of how the track will run

Agree with John B about Newcastle (watching brief)

In fact nothing much I fancy today, I backed those two Jamie Spencer rides last night, He finished 2nd in the last race at 12/1.

He has six very good rides at Nottingham this afternoon, not much chance in the first against a big odds on shot. But I have backed the other 5 in win singles and had a £1 each way accy on his 6 rides.

Off the walk the dog and hope to come home to a profit on the day.

Well done alanm but I seriously can’t fathom why anyone would consider Newcastle with no stats to work with and no knowledge of how the course runs

Also to anyone who actually bets on any races at Newcastle for the first 3 or 4 meetings good luck but you really have to have a serious think about giving up betting because horse racing is not meant to be a lottery and that’s what a new course is

    • Profile photo of Johnb

John racing is a lottery and has been for the 30 odd years I have been punting if form worked out all time there would be no bookmakers.

Haven’t been able to get on all day well done Alanm for the 12/1 hard to cal Newcastle atm but a decent horse goes on pretty any ground trainers have been on it must have a decent understanding of it so not a total blind punt either way it’s a winner

Got a double of the 5.50 winner and the fav in the last at wetherby as my round robin had a last place and 2 non runners 🙈
