After a disappointing I-League 2016-17 campaign, DSK Shivajians find themselves with a great opportunity to redeem themselves. With a win in the penultimate game of the group stage, they have put massive pressure on Bengaluru who face off against Mohun Bagan a few hours later on Friday.
The Pune based club were battered 4-0 in the opening game by Mohun Bagan but their response was brilliant. A surprisingly good performance against Bengaluru saw them pick up a 2-0 win and gave them the head to head advantage over the currently second placed Blues.
If Bengaluru succumb to Bagan’s pressure and lose their game, the Reds from Pune will go through to the semi-final, given they have done what they need to do- win against Lajong. A defeat in this match however could knock the Pune side out of the tournament, depending on Bengaluru’s result against Bagan.
A draw too could be enough unless Bengaluru beat Mohun Bagan.
The Reds from Shillong have nothing to play for. A win will make sure they bow out with their heads held high but it has been a difficult tournament for them. They have lost both their games with a 2-3 score line. While the first defeat in the game against Bengaluru would have been a hard one to take in, the second game against Mohun Bagan was the knockout punch.
Both these clubs won their away matches by outscoring each other when these two met in the league this season.
Shivajians are expected to make a few changes to their starting line up in order to go all-out attack right from the start. They might go with an attacking 4-3-3 with a backline of Chettri, Mcfaul, Kolunija and Lalrinzuala who will be screened by a three man midfield consisting of Milan Singh, Jerry and Pradhan. Narzary and Quero will attack from the flanks, giving ample service to Kim up front.
Lajong isn’t expected to bring in too many changes from their usual starting line up. They will look to defend deep and frustrate their opponents, knowing fully well that the Reds from Pune have no other option other an all out attack. Dipanda and Tamag have been ruled out of the game. Fabio Pena is expected to lead the line, supported by Singh and Tlang from the flanks.

The loss against Shivajians meanwhile have skewed Bengaluru’s hopes of progress as they need to look at the previous game where Shivajians take on Shillong Lajong. The group is still wide open and a Shivajians win will put all three teams in contention if Bengaluru defeat Mohun Bagan with the three teams on six points a piece. In that case head to head goal difference will come into action which might mean that Bengaluru need to win the match by a big margin. A Shivajians draw will see Bengaluru progress if they win their match, but a draw against Mohun Bagan will see them eliminated with DSK enjoying head to head advantage. A point will be enough for the Blues if Shillong surprise Shivajians.
When these two teams faced off during the league campaign, Blues were held to a stalemate at their home ground and were handed a 3-0 thrashing in Kolkata. Coach Alberto Roca will be concerned about keeping it tight at the back even though it is a must-win game.
The big news for the Blues is the suspension of midfielder Eugeneson Lyngdoh. It will be interesting to see who Roca chooses to fill the big hole left in midfield due to Lyngdoh’s absence. The rest of their dynamic 4-3-3 is expected to be unchanged but could be tweaked to go all out for a win. An unorthdox 4-4-2 could see Daniel paired with Glen up top with Chhetri and Udanta working in tandem as the inside forwards. This is a high risk strategy that will leave lots of space behind. Sunil Chhetri will need to take up responsibility and lead from the front and a couple of goals from the Indian striker wouldn’t go amiss in this scenario.
Mohun Bagan is expected to field an unchanged XI for their last group game. They are already through to the Semi Final and will look to keep the winning momentum alive. Balwant and Duffy are in form and will look to cause havoc up front in Bagan’s 4-4-2 although Sanjoy Sen might be inclined to give Jeje a shot as well. With their opponents desperate for a win, they will look to pounce on counter attacking opportunities by utilising the space left behind by opposition midfielders.

GROTTA VS. FYLKIR (20.15 KO):
When I first started following the Icelandic leagues, Grotta were dire (by name and by nature!) but tgey seemed to have built upon that and were successfully promoted to the 2nd tier at the end of the last campaign.
Conversely, Fylkir’s luck seems to have deserted them and they dropped out of the Urvalsdeild despite playing some decent football last year.
Goals-wise, Grotta have seen 2-10-1-5-5-7-5 match goals in their last 7 with Fylkir seeing totals of 4-7-2-3 across their most recent 4.

Apologies Mr F for again posting in the footy chat, I don’t know if you are sticking up a dedicated thread tomorrow but I’ve been scouting the markets today to try and find the value before the world and his wife have a flutter on the day.
I earlier put up Sweden top 5 finish at 5/6 and mentioned that this would shorten. It’s now available at a best 4/5 (Marathon) and is 8/11 with most bookies.
Here’s another one that’s caught my eye – Marathon are doing a “Match-Up” market allowing you various options to back one country to finish above another. One particular match which caught my eye was United Kingdom v Australia.
Whatever we think about whether they should be in or not, the fact is Australia are competing for the third year now and their previous two entries earned them solid 5th place and 2nd place finishes. The UK finished 24th in both years. Moreover, we have had only 2 top 10 finishes in the past 15 years and you have to go back 6 years for the first time we finished in the top 15. Granted, our entries generally haven’t been great, but we all know that’s a minor factor in the scheme of things when it comes to Eurovision voting. Factor in the predicted Brexit backlash vote too and we are surely looking at another poor showing. It therefore shouldn’t be too difficult to see the Aussies bettering us in the final standings, probably fairly comfortably. At nearly 2/1 I think this is a fantastic shout!
