May 1: Johnb’s Racing Tips & Chat

THERE was a nice double-stake winner for Johnb on Sunday with 6-4 pick Adamant first past the post at Salisbury.

He has a big-priced Nap among his Monday picks and thanks to everyone who posted a Sunday winner.

Johnb is on an excellent run of five Nap winners in a row and from his last eight there have been six winners and two seconds. Of 27 Naps in April he had 12 winners which is a 44.44 per cent success win rate.

Johnb’s Monday Tips

Bath 2:50
Diable d’Or 16-1 NAP paddy power

Saint-Cloud 3:00
Potemkin 15-2 NB paddy power

Windsor 4:55
Hell Yeah 13-2 paddy power

Also 3 x 0.25pt eachway doubles & 1 x 0.25pt eachway treble

April Stats: -39.46pts

Diable d’Or (NAP)

I like a challenge and Bath certainly is a challenge but it’s a challenge that has served me well over the years. The racecourse is situated up high so the wind can be a problem to horses and jockeys, it can be a stiff course because of the 4f uphill finish and the wind. Bath racecourse is the only British course not to have a watering system so it’s no surprise that the course is currently fast with a going stick reading of 10.9 although rain is expected tonight and early Monday morning before drying up again. Diable d’Or is interesting as he ran a career best in the Super Sprint at Newbury but can he reproduce an effort close to that? He hasn’t in his last two runs at Nottingham but both those races he wasn’t ridden to maximum effect and actually the jockey in both those races never used his whip once, it may be the case that he isn’t meant to do anything on Monday and is being saved for better but I just feel with him on a very low handicap mark he has to be near the head of the betting and certainly not a 16-1 shot. The small field is a concern but if he was to show the early speed he showed in the sprint cup then he could burn these away early, surely connections have to take advantage of his pace at a track like this.

Potemkin (NB)

The pricing of this horse is strange. This German horse by New Approach is a 6yo but has only had eight runs, he won the Group 2 Prix Dollar at Chantilly where he had Monday’s race joint favourite two lengths back in third and also giving Zarak 5lb and in this race they are off level weights. The main danger should be Godolphin horse Hawkbill but I do like Potemkin a lot, he had to wait till a gap appeared and when the jockey asked him it wasn’t an immediate turn of foot but when it did kick in it was impressive. He then went on to win the Group 1 Premio Roma, he got outpaced in that race but stayed on well to win by an eased down one and a half lengths, the front two pulling clear of the rest.

Hell Yeah

Bargains in horse racing are available which is proved by this horse. Hell Yeah is an ex Godolphin horse that was bought by Godolphin as a yearling for 70,000 Guineas but sold as an unraced 3yo for £800. He won on debut 623 days ago but hasn’t been seen since. What was impressive about that win was the slow pace, Hell Yeah was always at the back but travelled well throughout. He was still last with just over two furlongs to go but on the bridle, his burst of speed was eye catching. He was so quick he nearly ran up the back of a horse having to be checked up then showing a second burst of speed to romp to victory as the commentator said, when he won that race he had also been entered in a bumper that week. He is definitely the interesting horse of the race and the best value horse of the race as everything he did on debut looked perfect, to do what he did off a slow pace was exceptional.

    April was a 39.46pt loss

There was a total of 27 Naps in April with 12 winning which is a 44.44% win rate, those stats don’t matter as the only stat that matters is the bank account
All in all though I have to be reasonably happy with the horses being picked as the vast majority are running well and three times last month when I picked two horses, one has let me down by a head, head and neck for the double, such small margins have a big impact but that’s racing

My last five Naps have won so hopefully my 16/1 pick on Monday can carry that on and from my last eight Naps there have been six winners and two seconds,
A year is twelve months long, not four so plenty of time to get a change of luck

    • Profile photo of Johnb
      Johnb 1 year ago

      Winning Naps were 5/2, 11/4, 7/2, 5/2, 3/1, 15/2, 9/2, 11/4, 5/2, 3/1, 5/2, 6/4
In my opinion there is only one short priced favourite there and that was yesterday at 6/4
But did I say I was happy with a loss?, don’t think so, I said I had to be reasonable happy with the horses because the vast majority were running well, the problem isn’t the price of horses because if you haven’t noticed the majority of my selections see money because people realise those horses are the value of the race
One last thing, when I throw numbers and percentages out there they are accurate and not plucked out of the air like you

I don’t tip very often but I fancy the James Tate first time out horse tomorrow it’s sire Bated Breath was a great fave of mine . It’s doing well at stud Tates horses are running well and 4-1 with Bet 365 looks a cracking price.

    May now –

Another start to a new month and I wish the best of luck to all! .

    Bath 4:35 Mornington 6/5

Mornington is a very interest runner here, he looks to be well placed by his trainer. His latest win was very impressive showing a great turn of foot , but still looking green at the finish with an awkward head carriage . He was slowed at the finish having done enough to win . An 8lb rise here looks manageable with his young rider using his claim . He’s stepped up in distance aswel , judged by his fishing he’s going to be better suited by this track and trip .

    Morning all,

What a Super Sunday that was! With 3/4 of my confident selections landing I made a 44.81 point profit on the day. It was just a shame Taj Mahal went down by a neck otherwise it would have been a record day, one can’t be greedy though. That profit meant I finished April with a 31.31 point profit and after 6 months of positing daily on the site I have now recorded a profit every month! Monday is the early May bank holiday and there is lots of (average) racing to kick off the month, I’ve looked out a few bets:

    14.35 Windsor – Pretty Bubbles 7/1 EW

This consistent mare ran really well on her return to turf last time out. She finished 3rd over course and distance and off the same mark today she is entitled to go well once again. She is a pervious C&D winner and at 7/1 she rates as value in my book (0.75 points each way).

15.40 Beverley – Make On Madam 11/2 EW

Make On Madan loves it around Beverly and she won this race last year (from a high draw!). She arrives here today on the back of an authoritative victory last just under 2 weeks ago. Over a slightly longer trip that day she stormed clear to win by over 4 lengths. While she is raised 6lbs for that win Nathan Evans takes over in the saddle and halves that to 3lb with his claim. Withe the drop down in trip posing no issues and conditions to suit everything looks in place for a big run today (1 point each way @ 11/2).

    16.15 Beverley – Mariee 7/2

Sometimes the form of 1 race can prove to be so strong it rewards all those who follow it. That seems to be the case for the 19.20 at Chelmsford on the 23rd of March. That race itself has already provided over 20 points profit for myself with the winner (Hammer Gun) and second (London) winning next time (also the third placed horse ran well on Thursday at Chelmsford). I put all the horses form that race into my tracker and today two of those run today. First up is Mariee who was sent off favourite on the 23rd of May but could only managed 5th. Based on her pervious efforts on the AW she is a better horse than that and looks worthy of a bet today (2 points win @ 7/2).

    16.20 Windsor – Archimento 14/1 EW

The second horse from that Chelmsford race is Archimento who also looks worthy of a bet at a big price. The 4yo gelding has posted some solid efforts in his career and looks sure to be suited for the switch back to turn (1 points each way @ 14/1).

    16.55 Windsor – Croquembouche 4/1

Old timer Croquembouche loves it around Windsor and goes well fresh. He ran in some very competitive races last season and recorded some very solid efforts. In a small field this evening he has a decent record in small fields and hopefully he can run will today (1 point win @ 4/1).

Two shorter priced horses that I am happy to double up are Dali in the 14.45 Naas & Oscar Rose in the 14.05 Warwick. The double pays 2.3/1 and I’m happy to play 1.5 points on that as both look to hold outstanding chances.

Many thanks and GL to all

Antepost selection Sovereign Debt winging the AW mile final at 8/1.

Snoano winning at Pontefract at 14/1 (10p rule 4).

And Somehow winning yesterday at 6/4 rewarding a 15 point increased bet.

    Warwick 3:50

    Beyeh 8/1 1pt win

Looks incredibly well weighted , even after a long lay off . Has run at Cheltenham rated 125.

In a class 4 today off 112 he has had 2 years off . But looks good value at 8/1 in a race with no real progressive horses.

Hi guys, a new month but I will not be resetting my stats, they will still be tracked from day 1 from our original 100pt bank, which sits at 20.32pts down.

Had a lot of close 2nds which would put us in the black but it wasn’t to be, we go again this month. From today, I will be using bog, as everyone should be, therefore if I advise a 3/1 and it wins at 5/1, I will be claiming the extra points.

Let’s hope for a good month for all.

Good to see Lulu Stanford getting recognition from the press now

Lulu Stanford had the kind of day that made her want to shout on Sunday when reaching her most successful time in the saddle yet. The promising 19-year-old apprentice rode a notable double at Salisbury that took her career winners’ total to 30.
Not only the owners and trainers of the pair of winners were delighted, so were punters. Her victories from 200 career rides lifted the profit to a £1 level stake on all her mounts to £22 . She has now won on three of her last five rides. Of her 30 victories, 21 of those had been at all-weather tracks but this season her skills have been more recognised on turf.

Her first winner on Sunday was on Daddies Girl, who drifted in the betting to 7-1, but Stanford went into the lead on the filly two furlongs from home and they held the challenge of the hot favourite, Take Shelter. Daddies Girl’s trainer, Rod Millman, said: “Lulu’s great, isn’t she? She has ridden four winners for me this season and is an old head on young shoulders. When she arrives in the paddock she knows all about the other horses in the race, she does her homework.”
Millman, who trains at Cullompton, Devon, added: “Lulu clearly has the skill to ride horses and win on them. She’s great value for her 5lb claim.”
Later on the card Stanford was back in the winner’s enclosure aboard Cheval Blanche, this time for the Newmarket trainer Michael Bell, to whom she is apprenticed. Some serious punters showed their faith in Stanford, her mount being backed from 100-30 into 9-4 favouritism. The grey filly made most of the running and asserted in the closing stages to win comfortably from the Ryan Moore-ridden second favourite Aristocratic.
Bell spoke on Sunday night about how he has known Stanford since she was a curly-headed five-year-old. “She was brought up on ponies. These days she’s totally dedicated. I’d even say she has tunnel vision, entirely focused on her career – and she is doing extremely well.”
Stanford added: “I’ve had great support from Mr Bell, who has put me on some really nice horses. Mr Millman and several other trainers have been great to me too. It might be fantasising, but my ambition is to eventually be riding Group-class horses.”

What bugs me billy boy is that the level stake punter you rely on for your criticisms is a myth. I doubt very much jb himself is down minus 150. I doubt very much anyone following tips on this site is down by those margins. In fact i doubt anyone in the world of gambling bets to a level stake on a consistent basis. Its not the nature of the beast. At least not when your following tips on a web site.
Jb seems to function with his hands tied and maybe it does bring him long term proffits but i say this to you @johnb . You are impossible to follow every day. It simply doesnt happen and so the points system is not only flawed. Its kind of irrelevant. Im delighted to see the consistency in the naps. I didnt notice i admit but that is extremely solid form worth following.
Why are you not Ew on a 16/1 shout. A point Ew on that nap and you can bin the other fancies. In my opinion its the other two picks followed by the multiples that are killing you. Fair enough you nail one now and again but thats not what folk following this page want or need from you. You need to be the bread and butter of this page. Not the one in a spell big winner. We have mr theif and others for those bets. If its the points game your determined to play. I think you need to play it better sir. 👍 short list the other 2 if you want to flag them as likely and post your nap and nb. With respect.

    • Profile photo of Johnb
      Johnb 1 year ago

ray_ez It’s impossible to please everyone, for example some say my Naps are too short, some are happy with them, some say I pick too many horses when others pick more, some say the multiples are a bad choice whereas some like them, three times last month it was nearly on the bob of the head that decided the outcome, three full houses in a month would be good going, some people like to know how confident I am because it affects what they bet whereas some people just call it cocky, arrogant and don’t like it, some people think trying to judge a horses progress is not the way to study and that just form is better whereas some like the way I do it, some people want short prices some want big prices but I deal in value, some people like me posting my shortlisted horses and some say they don’t and that I shouldn’t,
I know of one punter that won 60k with my shortlisted horses not too long ago, the accumulator paid over 400,000/1 but people don’t realise how things like that can change one persons life

Onto eachway, I have always said on here that my profits are more backing win only than they are backing eachway so I just leave it to the individual as they can make up their own mind

        • Profile photo of juicin

As mrfixit stated, if you dont rate johnb, dont follow him, then there is no need for this discussion, however I think my comments are just towards this discussion.

Ray_ez why do you doubt johnb is 150pts down this year? That is only losing a little over 1pt a day, which is well within reason. Johnb is the one who has told us that level stakes over the long term is the way to make a profit, so what makes you think his followers disregard this vital piece of information? You say a level stake is not the nature of the beast, well johnb advises it, and perhaps it should be, then maybe you won’t have 5 bookies on every high street all turning over millions, just because it seems you have no restraint to bet sensibly, doesn’t mean it isn’t how things are done, or how they should be.

As mentioned, Johnb says he brings profit over the long term, “judge him on long term stats”, well I would love to, but they are not published anywhere that we can all access easily, which is very contradictory. One guy seems to have correlated his results this year and states he is 150pts down, and you dismiss it out of hand, with no evidence, just blindly defending him for no reason and without substance.

I don’t think you made any valid points at all, how is it impossible to follow johnb everyday? That is what he advises, and on a level stake as mentioned, if not you will likely miss out when he does hit a ‘full house’. This is why you have a healthy 100+ point bank to enable you to bet over the long term, perhaps you need to lower your point value..

          • Profile photo of ray_ez
            ray_ez 1 year ago

@juicin I have read and re-read your reply a few times to understand what your getting at and i have a couple of things i would like you to understand.
First of and most importantly i was not clear enough when i said john is not down 150 points. The correlation may well be true but i know john was on labraik @50/1. That was not tipped on the day. I doubt that would be the only winner he backed but did not post. Thats what i meant by not being 150 points down and also a casing point for my comment in general.
I cannot follow johns tips every day because i cannot afford to miss the big one. That im sure you agree would be a catastrophy. I also notice that you dont follow him every day either or you would be betting with your proffits and would have the answer to the long term proffit stat.
As for my gambling habits. Well lets just say it keeps me in ps4 games. Thats good enough for me. Im still waiting for the real big one but im happy enough to plod along and use the whole site to enjoy my hobby. And believe me. I get great pleasure from being here. 👍

Headline naps \tips are what paid tipsters are rated on.
Not tips that have been placed personally or mentioned in text.

Every tip here is put here in good faith and is much appreciated by myself, win or lose, you guys put the time and well done.

So John is 150 down on headline tips, they are his tips that he shares with us, not ours, and has been said a thousand times, its our decision where our money goes, and not Johns responsibility.

Not going to continue anymore for the good of the thread, I atm at ml about positivity, and want one cohesive unit all pulling together.

John has great knowledge that transcends beyond his daily tips, but your point about labaik is moot. It wasn’t a tracked tip, therefore we cant assume it ate into the losses of anyone following him.
It was however an excellent bit of insight and that is the real benefit we get from John, he does know his stuff and as I say, horses he tips usually go onto do well later, just look at athassel for example, JB highlighted this horse in the thread and it had a good season and won at 12/1 recently, and Churchill, tipped at 33s now almost evens a yes in, it i remarkable and the list is endless.

My only point in this whole debate is the lack of accessibility we hsve to his stats, he is about long term stats, yet the onus is on us to spend hours finding them.. makes no sense.

I’ll say it for the last time the stats are there if you look.
Also he always posts his end of year stats and will do so again.
For me his next tip is more important than what’s gone before.

Thanks john. I get frustrated when folk come on and start throwing points and losses around. Ive had my say now and am ready to move on. I dont envy your position and i continue to hold you in the highest regard.

You don’t need to defend yourself.
I know what you bring to the site and the silent majority also appreciate it.

One last one. I notice mr f keeps his singles and accas separate. Just saying 😊

It’s up to John how he does it.
I’ve been doing a “Super Single” for many years before the site started so I like to keep it separate.

I’ve always liked John b.i know how difficult it is to bet/pick horses out every day and make a profit.I also agree with Mr F for once on his defence of John

The point is, how are we supposed to know if he is any good? His stats are wiped clean each month and there isn’t a page showing his long term stats…

Every tip and every Johnb tips remains on the site.
If you are that interested dig them out.
You’ve made your point – if you want to criticise Johnb any more do it somewhere else.
Even better put up a tip.

Not trying to get banned or have a dig at John, just being objective, as I will tell anyone, John is invaluable in terms of knowledge, even the horses he tips that don’t win, you often see winning shortly after, I vote we add another year to his contract.

You don’t have a vote – he’s here to stay unless he chooses to go.
I don’t like banning anyone but if your crusade against Johnb carries on I have no option.
I’ve allowed you to have your say – also re the Racing Post naps table that’s just naps.
Johnb’s stats are for all tips, long shots, doubles and trebles so they can’t be compared the way you have.

Great job all winners today. Not so handy from myself !

This whole criticism of johnb going on a bit much. As others have said not like your forced to bet on his tips , I had little ew punt on his nap today , didn’t come in. Oh well , just support each other and make ur own decision on his pick
