MAR 23: CRICKET AND OTHER SPORTS TIPS

cricketworldcuptrophy

THE stage is set for a cracking clash between New Zealand and South Africa as both countries look to reach their first Cricket World Cup Final.

The Black Caps are on home turf in Auckland for the semi-final that gets under way at 1am Tuesday morning and the tight ground’s short, straight boundaries should suit the hosts.

The Kiwis also boast some ace bowlers but the South Africans have plenty of weapons of their own, most notably superstar batsman AB De Villiers.

The bookies make South Africa slight favourites – 4-5 at the likes of Coral and Skybet – while the Black Caps are 6-5 at Sportingbet.

Earlier on Monday it’s the start of cycling showpiece the Volta a Catalunya where Alberto Contador and Chris Froome head a stellar line-up.

It’s billed as part two of the pair’s 2015 duel with Froome having earned a narrow overall victory over the Spaniard at the Vuelta a Andalucia in Febrauary.

Neither of the duo are favourite to bag glory this week – that honour belongs to Alejandro Valverde, 5-2. Then it’s Froome at 5-1 and Contador at 6-1, all with bet365.

For victory in Monday’s opening stage – which starts and ends in the coastal town of Calella and features a trek inland through rolling terrain – Gianni Meersman tops the betting at 4-1 with BetVictor followed by Bryan Coquard (9-2, Paddy Power) and Luka Mezgec (6-1, BetVictor).

Rounding off the Monday action is six NBA matches, including Western south-west leaders Memphis Grizzlies at New York Knicks and a crunch Eastern clash as Boston Celtics visit Brooklyn Nets.

dazzler will you be posting tips for MLB regular season? I quite like betting on the over/unders

  7. JamesB81 2 years ago

Reasonable odds on the Kiwis with bet365 offering 11/10.

It’s a game that could go anyway but I do think that is a decent price for the Home team.

    On any Tennis today Ad?

  9. Ad 2 years ago

I’ve not had a chance to look at any tennis over the last few days. From a quick glance at today’s card im probably just going to stick a couple of quid on Zhu d Schiavone @ 2/1, Melzer d PAire @ 4/1 and Dodin d Dulgheru @ 3/1. Wont be tipping anything till tomorrow or the day after though when I’ve had a chance to watch a bit

  10. Dazzler 2 years ago

I certainly will be Andy. I’ll be mainly betting on overs/unders as well. I do like the hits market and had a lot of success with it last season.

Posted last night. Interested to hear anyone else’s thoughts on the game, especially anyone fancying south Africa. May or may not post mine later.

I’ve spent a bit of time tonight looking through the first cricket world cup semi final between south Africa and new Zealand. I’m still really struggling to see why south Africa are odds on favourites considering it’s in New Zealand and they’ve already lost twice this tournament. In fact they’ve looked rattled any time they’ve come up against a decent bowling attack and they’re notorious chokers at this stage of tournaments. I’m gonna look more in depth tomorrow at the overs/unders for total 4′s, 6′s, and boundaries and thoroughly look through all stats but the 2 bets that stick out at the moment are

New Zealand Win v South Africa

    6/5 Sportingbet

    5pts

Top NZ bowler – Trent Boult

    11/4 Stan James

    2pts

I will re post these tomorrow, possibly with write ups (depending on how much time I’ve got and if I can be bothered), but if not then hopefully you trust me anyway!

  15. Ellis 2 years ago

Harry the game is tonight mate

I’m the same how can SA be favourites?!

  16. Harry 2 years ago

I know I just reposted that from last Night! If I get some time later after work I’d like to post a write up with my thoughts, as the only reason I can see is the bookies pricing up south Africa based on their name. It’s definitely not been priced up due to form. South Africa were comfortably beaten by India and Pakistan whilst new Zealand have thrashed England, Sri Lanka, West indies, and made the aussie batsmen look very average. Also think India look way over priced because of their form coming into this tournament. But they’re looking a completely different side now and they’ve bowled out every side they’ve faced which is very impressive.

  17. Alex 2 years ago

Harry-Not had a chance to look at in depth but will put an hour to the side this evening. I came across a great stat that SA have almost had a wicket fall in every one of their innings prior to making it to 30 runs. I think the odds were 5/6 for a wicket to fall before then but I would not go too crazy if I backed that… Incidentally if you do not mind mind me asking are your points equivalent to Mr F’s or are they larger? I don’t need to know the amounts but it always helps to know when gauging your confidence in how much I choose to back the bet with. Some will say back with what you can afford to lose etc but I like knowing as it is an indication of confidence such as your 2 10 point hits on the recent treble :) Incidentally I was leaning on taking New Zealand although as I say I want another hour to put something together which might help. Too busy at work to be done now, sigh.

  18. Harry 2 years ago

Alex I’m in the same boat, really busy day at work today so may not have time to post anything thorough until 9pm or so. That stat doesn’t surprise me at all, as De kock has been opening with amla and he’s been well out of form, off the top of my head I think he averaged 4 in the first 5 or 6 matches! Amla has also struggled in this tournament against a decent bowling attack and I did quite a big write up for one of their previous games on how they’re brilliant at bullying/destroying the weaker bowling teams but other than AB, they absolutely collapse against better bowling. I was going to include all of this in my write up later as well as stats, and I also think the pitch is going to be very important and I’ll explain my thinking on trent Boult Backed up with stats too.

Yes my points system is the same as Mr f’s in terms of confidence, the only difference is I don’t have quite as many followers so I don’t need to post something more or less every day. My quarter finals cricket treble I tipped 10 points to show my confidence but had 22 points on it myself in the end, but it was over 3 days. on average I don’t go over 10 points a day but some days it might be 15 and then 5 the next day

  19. Harry 2 years ago

Alex I can’t check it properly at the moment but if you looked through the stats on South Africa losing their first wicket, new Zealand taking their first wicket, and how early teams lose their first wicket on this ground, I’d imagine 5/6 looks pretty generous!

  20. Alex 2 years ago

It might just be the bet for us then 😉 Re the pitch I know it is tight so it should favour the boundaries although slightly dangerous if SA go on to choke and do not hold up their end of the bargain. Will check in later before I am linched by my clients. Incidentally am I correct in think you live near/around North London? I’m pretty sure I remember you posting that you were on your way to the circket at Alley Pally of have I got it totally wrong?

  21. Harry 2 years ago

New Zealand win v South Africa
    India win v Australia

    Double 5.3/1 bet365

    1pt

  22. Harry 2 years ago

Live in South London but have a season ticket at arsenal and lots of family up there so I’m often around there. No I was at the darts at the ally pally, my favourite yearly tradition! I’m actually finding the boundaries bets too hard to call as this could potentially be a very low scoring game. The nz v aus game here only had 300 runs and the Pakistan v SA game only had 420 ish. Combine that with both teams fierce swinging bowling and it could be another ball dominated game. If anything I was looking at the unders markets but I think I’ll swerve It. Looks like you’ve unearthed a gem in that SA first wicket market though!

  23. Jordan 2 years ago

Huggy I believe you’ll find I was 6/6 if you count ‘crap shooters’ as under haha

‘Bucks are one of the best 3 point shooters in the league. Now at 196.

    Spurs/Hawks Over 203

Pelicans/Clippers could go over but Davis would have to play. 203

Magic/Denver possible over. Faried points could be a could bet there.

Wizards/Kings Under 206 if Cousins is out again.

Philly/Lakers crap shooters. Nerlens Noel points a possibility.’

well i`m gonna go with nets / celtic over 203 … both teams capable of 100 plus games and think they both focus offensively and nets have been scoring well of late.

Harry mate whats your thoughts on the cricket player runs market for example Mccmullum over 33.5 runs pays 5/6 looks a decent bet or market dont you think?

  35. David mc 2 years ago

Any thing tickle both ur fancies jordan/huggy ??

  36. Harry 2 years ago

Shotty it’s sounds a bit too obvious but if I were to go on that market I’d go with guptill. Reason being mccullum is so unpredictable, all his talk in the lead up to this game has been how he’s going to keep his attacking explosive style no matter who they play. it could be risky against a fierce south Africa attack to continue playing the way he plays And he could even get caught first over or something especially with the short square boundaries he’s very likely to go for it. I’d personally go for guptill as he’s a much calmer batsman and knows he needs to stay in for this kind of game. Only my opinion and go with your gut feeling as I won’t be on this market anyway, already on Boult.

  37. Alex 2 years ago

    New Zealand v S. Africa

Firstly let me commence this commentary by saying I am no cricket enthusiast and almost never watch cricket, well apart from this World Cup that is. If that is not a strong enough warning then may I add I am not sure that I know all the rules of cricket! I will leave the story telling about facts and so forth to the journalists. What I will say is that neither team has ever appeared in a World Cup final before. From what I have seen I believe NZ have the stronger bowling attack and thus far SA have been exposed against the better bowling teams. These are the bowling figures for NZ and when the first wicket fell starting from their most recent match: 4, 4, 5, 30, 18, 1 and 67. In contrast SA’s highest opening partnership in the group stages was just 18. A lot of this rides on SA wicket keeper De Kock, who had a stinker in the group stage amassing 53 runs in 6 innings only to hit an unbeaten 78 off just 57 balls against Sri Lanka. I think that needs to be put in context since Sri Lanka are no longer the bowling force of the last World Cup. Will he fire again, how the hell do I know?! What I can say is that he is up against the inform pair of Boult and Southee. The other NZ opener Amla can also be credited with scores of 11, 12 and 16 during the tournament although on the whole a much more prolific batsmen. It will be an interesting match up with some strong scorers in there such AB de Villiers (417) for SA and Martin Guptill’s (498) awesome 237 not out while Brendon McCullum has been handy with the bat. SA have suffered their two defeats in the group stages when chasing totals after bowling first. NZ are currently undefeated with 7 wins. There is previous between these two teams from the 2011 WC. The game takes place in a tight ground called Eden Park where there have been two tight scores involving tonight’s opponents. SA fell 29 runs short when chasing down Pakistan’s 231 while NZ chased 152 to beat Australia. Will that play on their minds, possibly? Would be interested on what Harry makes of this as I might increase my stakes. Stats and facts taken from numerous articles on the net but I will not quote them since they are facts and do not want to fall foul of Mr F.

I will be on the following:

New Zealand to win 6/5 Sporting bet 3 points

SA opening partnership under 29.5 runs 5/6 Ladbrokes 2 points

NZ & Australia double 3.17/1 Sporting bet 1 point

  38. paul 2 years ago

Think boult and southee top batsmen for nz will mean profot

STeyn 3/1 for sa looks good

THink sa will reach final as ive been impressed with them pre world cup n tipped them pre wc at 10/3 so my final is sa aus with aus scraping home by one run!!

  39. Sanj 2 years ago

Quinton de kock scored 78 not out against a poor Sri Lanka chasing a low target with less pressure but his previous 6 innings in the world cup yielded just 53 runs. I fancy Trent Boult to knock him over early backed by home crowd and conditions

    Quinton de kock under 25.5 runs 5/6 @ s k y b e t

    • Alex 2 years ago

Sanj- why not take the same price for under 29.5 runs, gives you a whole 4 runs breathing space 😛

  40. Sanj 2 years ago

My only worry Alex is that Amla is someone I’d consider one of SA’s best batsmen. With my bet they could still get to something like 50 before losing de kock for under 25.5 as an individual score. In all likelihood though I think both your and my bets will be in within the first few balls anyway :)

  41. OriaZ 2 years ago

Decided to go for a trebble and a fourfold (inspired by Jordan/Huggy’s picks) :

    Fourfold:
    – Golden State Warriors ML
    – Jazz -2.5
    – Bulls +2.5
    – Grizzlies -5.5

    Just over evens @ various.

    Trebble:
    – Jazz/Timberwolves under 195.5
    – Knicks/Grizzlies under 194.5
    – Nets/Celtics over 193.5

    Just over evens @ various.

    Good luck everyone!

  42. Alex 2 years ago

Hope you are right mate. I actually misread your bet initially ha ha hence my post.

  43. Sean 2 years ago

Know sod all about cricket but given there is hardly anything worth a flutter on this week ill go on the above guys confidence on a New Zealand win.
    Thanks and good luck.

  44. Harry 2 years ago

Looks like quite a few of us are split on tonight’s game! I’m unable to post a nice long write up with my thoughts on my 2 tips for the game (NZ win & Boult), due to lack of time and effort. But Alex has covered a fair bit of what I had to say about NZ anyway. You’ve saved me a lot of time with putting up the stats and numbers so thanks for that. I heard a stat earlier that SA have failed to chase 270+ in all but one of their last 9 attempts or something, which is pretty unimpressive, whereas we’ve seen NZ are very comfortable posting a big score AND chasing down totals.

I really like your find on the unders for opening partnership and I’ll be sticking 2-3 points myself on it. SA lost early wickets to Ireland, Zimbabwe, and UAE, who aren’t anywhere near as dangerous as Boult and southee. You’ve mentioned amla being more prolific but he’s been disappointing for me in this tournament. His averages don’t look as bad as De kock but when you look who he’s scored his runs against its not too impressive. I’d even fancy myself to bag a ton v Ireland haha.

Only thing I disagree with you on is your double (although it’s only 1pt), I think India are very good value considering their form and experience. Also they’ve got the ideal conditions at Sydney with a turning wicket and Australia don’t have a spinner to the standard of Indias. If the game was at the WACA or Wellington then I’d have to say Australia definitely but the conditions are perfect as can be for India and their slow bowling. Also they’re the reigning champs and have won their last 16 straight games in world Cups and the champions trophy. The other reason is they’ve got MS Dhoni, I’m a huge fan of his calmness and tactical genius, I know Clarke is a top captain too but Dhoni is getting his team to perform above their ability and they always seem to manoeuvre their way through the knockout stages of tournaments with the correct set up

  45. Harry 2 years ago

3rd and final re-post of my tips for tonight:

New Zealand Win v South Africa

    6/5 Sportingbet

    5pts

Top NZ bowler – Trent Boult

    11/4 Stan James

    2pts

New Zealand win v South Africa
    India win v Australia

    Double 5.3/1 Bet365

    1pt

    I’ve also got 2pts on Alex’s tip

SA opening partnership – under 29.5

Good luck all. Except anyone on South Africa, I hope you lose.

  46. Alex 2 years ago

Sean- I hope you don’t mean me I’m following Harry :) Off for some Zzzz’s good luck with your bets gents.

    • Sean 2 years ago

You and Harry can sort it out between you who’s to thank/blame tomorrow,no backing out now youve both promised a win,did i see the word ‘banker’ in the write up,could’ve sworn i seen it :)

  47. The Raider 2 years ago

I think the toss is crucial. If NZ bat first I am almost certain they will win. Boult and Southee will take early wickets, Vettori will put the squeeze on and Adam Milne provides the “X-Factor”…. he’s got the ability to do to the SA batting line up what Wahab Riaz did to Australia.

If they do lose the toss and SA put them in I do think NZ batting can be fragile if they lose a few early wickets. The lower-middle order haven’t had to do much this tournament and could be exposed by Steyn and co. if SA get through a few quick ones.

All that being said two bets for this evening:

Kane Williamson top NZ Batsman 7/2
    New Zealand to win 11/10

As I said the toss is crucial.

  48. Alex 2 years ago

Good luck with your bets Harry. I’ve had a dabble with your bowler albeit at 5-2. I think the ground may favour the bowlers.

I don’t disagree with you about the ground favouring the spin bowlers either. I found some stats v India that made for a good read e.g. they tend to suffer a defeat before kicking on in these tournaments, have a pretty poor record with Australia at World Cups, have been out there for 3 months and been slaughtered by Australia and played the weaker teams all ranked 7-14 thus far. I wouldn’t be surprised if India win so hence why it’s only a point mate.

  49. Harry 2 years ago

The raider I don’t wholly disagree with your stuff, just want to inform you Adam milne is out injured for the rest of the tournament.

    • The Raider 2 years ago

Harry – I wasn’t aware of that but that still won’t put me off of backing NZ. Depending on NZ pick as the replacement could influence anyone looking at boundary markets / spreads on total runs and spreads on runs in the last 15 overs for NZ.

  50. The Raider 2 years ago

Also Dan Vettori to be the most economical bowler at 23/10 @ Paddy Power (Vettori against Steyn, Morkel, Tahir, Southee, Bolt). A wearing Sydney pitch will be conducive to spin and in the middle overs the South African’s haven’t been the best at keeping up with the scoring rate (the last 15 is another proposition though!!)

  51. Alex 2 years ago

The Raider- Milne is out of the tournament with an injury, leg swelling or something like that.

  52. Harry 2 years ago

I agree it’s worth a point, I’ve only gone for India as I think they’re over priced at 2/1. Really don’t think they should be more than 6/4. I watched quite a bit of them pre tournament as well as England and they actually look a completely different side, something has clicked within their squad and they’ve really grown into the tournament. To use a football world cup analogy I’d compare them with Germany over the years. Always very efficient and seem to get their tactics right when it gets important regardless of form. I was also shocked/impressed with how they eased past Pakistan and south Africa. Australia should win though and it would be unusual for the bookies to get both games wrong so I’m not hugely confident on my double, hence it only being a point too!

VP I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on India if you read this?

  53. Shotty 2 years ago

Going to stick an NBA single up and hope i get back to winning ways going with one of my favourite markets team half time points and going with Brooklyn over 51.5 playing a celtics team who played last night and lost whereas the Nets are rested and smashing the points recently pays 10/11 @SkyBet

  54. Harry 2 years ago

The raider don’t let it put you off, I’m on NZ too, just letting you know in case you’ve backed him. Also, probably sounds like I’m being pedantic now, but the game is at Auckland not Sydney, so more suited to the seamers than vettori. The India Australia game tomorrow is at Sydney, hence I’m siding with India as better value due to the wearing Sydney pitch and the Indian spinners. The only other thing I’d say is I’m not sure we’ll see the final 15 overs tonight, I can another low scoring game in a ball dominated duel!

  55. The Raider 2 years ago

Harry – I really am half asleep…. no idea why I thought it was in Sydney! Must be past my bedtime. I think India are a huge price in a one off game vs Australia but I just feel like Australia have too much firepower – in both the batting and bowling departments. Worth a punt but still think the Aussies will get it right.

I too have a feeling it will be a lower scoring contest however with both sides array of batting talents if someone steps up and scores a century this could easily be 300+ per side.

  56. peter 2 years ago

At 4/1 de Villiers looks a good bet for top SA batsman. South Africa look a good pick too with NZ’s middle order being untested against a big total, especially with steyn and morkel up front to take a few early wickets.

  57. Harry 2 years ago

    South Africa batting first

  58. The Raider 2 years ago

I’m happy it’s at Sydney Harry because Dhoni knows how to use Jadeja, Ashwin and Raina so well when the spinners are in control. They get through the middle overs so quickly and at good economies and I think this is important. Our fast bowlers have been so good as well which is a bit surprising and I love the stat that we have bowled out every team we have faced. I’m also very happy that Sharma got a big hundred because I think he’s our most important batsman with Kohli. Raina and Dhoni are in good finishing form and Dhawans playing well too. So everything is looking pretty good and obviously I’m hoping we win. Australia battered us in the tour but so did England in the tri series so I don’t think this is too important. We look like we want it now and I think we look much stronger than Australia do now

  67. Jordan 2 years ago

Neither am I mate but you saw my Harden bet the other night, obviously just had an off day as there were no sings of slacking tonight.

  68. Harry 2 years ago

The raider I was only on alex’s opening partnership under 29.5 which flew in thanks to amla! Nice to see Boult get a couple early too.

VP I’m glad you mirror my thoughts, I think India are excellent value for the same reasons you’ve given. Sharma needed that big score as I feel it was the only thing missing from your tournament so far really And it’s come at the perfect time. Based purely on form and experience, I think India are a very generous price at 2/1

Klay Thompson back in the Warriors line up tonight.

Little inside info. LA Lakers coach will not be at the game in OKC tomorrow and Minnesota on Wednesday as he’s attending his mothers funeral.

OKC spread @ 10.5. Might be possible without the play caller on the sidelines for LA.

    Approach with caution

    Bulls ML
    Grizzlies ML
    Jazz -3.5

    4/5 @ 365 **LOSE**

Covered @ 2/1 but that doesn’t help anyone. Hopefully if followed you took with caution as stated. If I’d have known Gordon Hayward wasn’t playing I’d have left that well alone. Apologies gents.
