IT was a disappointing day for the top tips and there’s no getting way from it. The likes of Brentford, Watford and Leeds were well tipped in general and will have let down millions of punters.
Is it a coincidence these sides are in the English Championship? I’m not sure but there’s no doubt results in that division can be a bit crazy at times.
When I made up my shortlists teams such as Spurs, Arsenal, Southampton, MK Dons, Celtic, Hearts and QoS were in there – and while they all win I mixed them up with some bigger-priced teams in search of value.
So once again my singles are showing a deficit but I hope to address that on Sunday. Like many people I’ve been tipping Hibs to beat Rangers for the best part of a week and not surprisingly they are now odds on after first being flagged up at 23-20.
Regulars on this site have profited many times this season from backing against Rangers when they’ve been priced up wrongly. On this occasion they’ve got it right but I’m still tempted by Hibs simply because the Ibrox men have drawn their last five games against sides mainly in the bottom half.
There has been no improvement in results since Stuart McCall took over and little improvement in performances. Crucially Hibs know how to beat Rangers having done so three times in the league this season including 4-0 at Easter Road.
Alan Stubbs’s men are in fine form with eight wins in nine games and have a Scottish Cup semi-final sport to look forward to. I’m happy to tip them up at just under evens and I’m splitting the Super Single stake with half on Hibs -1 AH – and on that one it’s money back if Hibs win by one.
I’ve posted separate previews on Sunday’s biggest games – Barcelona v Real Madrid and Liverpool v Man United – and both feature on my both teams to score treble along with Bayern Munich v Borussia Moenchengladbach which pushes up the odds.
The stats for the first two picks are on the other threads. Borussia could give Bayern a decent game and have netted on five of their last six visits to the Olympic Stadium and netted exactly two in their previous five outings.
For the goals single I’m going with Villarreal v Sevilla as the sides meet for a third time in 10 days. Both legs of their Europa League tie went over 2.5 goals with both scoring and holders Sevilla winning both.
Nine of the last 10 meetings between the sides have gone over 2.5 goals and Sevilla have netted at least two goals in eight of their last 10 matches against Villarreal.
I’m starting the Top Treble with Real Sociedad at home to Cordoba. Davie Moyes’s side have won three of their last four as they climb the table and all season have been strong on their own soil.
Cordoba are heading for the drop having lost all eight league games in the second half of the season. They have lost all three previous visits to the Basques and it would be a huge surprise if they picked up anything here.
Add a Napoli side who have been in decent form and have reached the last eight of the Europa League. The only recent defeat for Rafael Benitez’s side cam when they rested players, including star striker Gonzalo Higuain against Verona, and should take care of an Atalanta outfit who haven’t lost in their last six matches.
I’m completing the treble with Bristol City to beat League One rivals Walsall in the JP Trophy final at Wembley. City are by the far better team with the bigger squad and their form has been maintained despite rotating squads.
Games between the two have been tight with City winning 1-0 this season but I reckon the trophy favourites will beat a side with just win in six.
If City represent too much of a risk with it being a cup final other teams to consider are Chelsea at Hull, Wolfsburg at Mainz and Marseille at Lens.
