MY only bet on Monday was maximum stakes on Shamrock Rovers to beat Derry in the League of Ireland.
At 1-2 the price was shorter than I’d like for a Super Single but needs must as I try to wipe out early June losses. My 10pts bet made me a 5pt profit and I’ve deducted 0.7pts for covering Derry double chances at 14-1 when Rovers led 1-0.
I didn’t have any doubts about Shamrock, who were by then facing 10 men, but with a 10pts stake it’s better to be safe than sorry and for me the cover cost just £7.
Later I put up women’s World Cup favourites USA -1 against Australia and while it came in with a 3-1 win it was lucky. I stayed up to watch the game and USA were poor – in fact compared to second favourites Germany they looked pedestrian. When it went 3-1 I part covered by putting 0.2pts on Australia at 14-1 to score next so my profit on the bet was 2.9pts and losses on the SS are now below 6pts.
I’ll start to study Copa America over the next few days but you could do worse than check out the excellent previews on all three groups and team-by-team guide on We Love Betting, with guest input from Tim Vickery.
We Love Betting’s Mark O’Haire has done a fine job and I don’t have the time to match his efforts so I might be nicking some of his background stuff.
On Tuesday there are three matches in Ireland and I’ve put up another Super Single of both to score at St Pat’s v Bohemians with reasoning on a separate Irish preview thread.
There is a huge game in Italy with Bologna facing Pescara for the right to play in Serie A next season. Bologna did well to shut out their rivals in Friday’s first leg considering Pescara had previously sailed through the play-offs and were Serie B top scorers in the regular season.
As they finished above Pescara during the campaign any draw will win Bologna promotion and it’s worth noting. It also means attack-minded Pescara will need to go for it so there should be goals with both scoring paying 1-1 at bet365 and I’m taking that as another Super Single.
During the season it was 0-0 at Bologna who won 3-2 at Pescara which is why they have the h2h advantage. In fact Bologna are unbeaten in the nine meetings they’ve with Pescara, winning five and drawing four, so should pick up the result they need.
In the women’s World Cup it’s Spain v Costa Rica, Colombia v Mexico and England kick off their campaign with a tough clash against France. Spain should easily see off an young Costa Rican side and I’m doing a double with over 2.5 goals in the match and both to score in England’s game.
England have never beaten France and been knocked out by their European rivals in the last two tournaments but they should be good enough to score.
As you know my maximumn stakes on one day are 10pts although it would be more accurate to say I don’t risk losing more than 10 points – so while today’s bets total 12pts the 5pt punt on USA has already won.

Meanwhile, Raaljaca’s goals thread started recently and he’s asking for donations to two cancer charities. In June we’re supporting another cause in the shape of Projects Abroad who send volunteers to work in poor countries all over the world.
My student daughter is raising money for a trip to a Romanian orphanage and this month all Buy a Beer donations (£3 minimum) will be passed on to Projects Abroad so click the button if you want to help.
