June 29: Europa League Preview

RANGERS need to show signs of progress and what better way to start than putting Progres to the sword.

Pedro Caixinha’s new-look side run out at Ibrox no bigger than 1-16 at bet365 to see off the minnows from Luxembourg.

It’s really a no-win situation for the manager who will be expected to treat the sell-out crowd to a Europa League rout.

Teams can find it hard in their season opener – remember Celtic last season in Gibraltar – but being at home in Europe for the first time in six years should help.

Caizinha’s preparations have been spot on with players checking back into Ibrox early and signings made early.

Bruno Alves is still at the Confeds Cup and Daniel Candeias hasn’t been cleared to play but Rangers should be strong enough to put four or five past their visitors.

Last season their home record was good with just three league defeats so consider Gers -2 at 1-2 with boylesport or -3 at 11-10 with McBookie.

Progres have netted just once in eight European ties so consider Gers to win to nil at 8-13.

If first-scorer prices are posted try old stager Kenny Miller to show his team-mates the way to goal.

St Johnstone face a tougher task in their Europa League qualifier against Trakai of Lithuania.

Tommy Wright’s men have plenty of Euro experience now and have recorded decent wins against the likes of Rosenborg.

The Perth men look a little short at 4-9 with Betway and best bet could be under 2.5 goals at 43-40 with bet365 as they work their way into the season.

Elsewhere back Odd and Haugesund against Irish sides Coleraine and Ballymena respectively and take Rabotnicki away to San Marino side Tre Penne which sounds like a good pasta dish.

Last season I tipped many moneyback fivefolds and to those three add AEL Limassol – Rangers’ likely opponents in the next round – away to Gibraltar outfit St Josephs and HJK Helsinki at Welsh outfit Connahs Quay.

Progres must quite fancy their chances in the return leg.
“They probably expected to win tonight by five or six goals and it’s not the case, so anything could happen next week,” says Progres coach Amodio.
