June 17: Jordan’s Sports Tips & Chat

THE British and Irish Lions are back in action this morning in the final dress rehearsal ahead of the opening Test against the All Blacks.

Tuesday’s friendly against the Chiefs won’t feature first-choice players so this is the last chance for Warren Gatland’s top stars to sharpen their game ahead of the opener.

The Lions suffered a narrow loss to Highlanders last time out and today face New Zealand Maori, who wear the All Blacks kit and have a lot of similar players.

A Lions win in Rotorua pays 4-7 at Unibet while the Maori are 2-1 at StanJames and both teams to score 20+ points is 5-6 at Betfair.

At the Nottingham Open tennis, British No.1 Johanna Konta is in semi-final action and chalked up at 1-2 by Paddy Power to make it past Magdalena Rybarikova (24-13, 10bet).

There’s loads more Saturday sport worth a flutter including cricket, boxing and of course US Open golf so let’s hear all your tips and thoughts.

    WBA, WBO & IBF Light-Heavyweight Unification (18th June 03:30)

    Andre Ward vs Sergey Kovalev

Andre Ward to be knocked down 2/1 William Hill **NAP**

Sergey Kovalev to win 23/17 Marathon Bet

The two best fighters at 175lbs meet again for part 2 tonight following on from last year’s controversial encounter. Many boxing fans and writers believe it should’ve been Kovalev having his hand raised after twelve pulsating rounds at the T-Mobile Arena but the decision went to Ward, the American home country fighter who was awarded a unanimous decision by the THREE American judges at ringside. All of this despite being dropped to the canvas in round 2 and getting pretty much out punched until at least the seventh where it began to level out. There were accusations of politics entering the sport with American and Russian relations not being at their best at the time of the fight so a rematch was called for and here we are seven months later.

Its a classic clash of styles, the sheer brute power of Kovalev versus the technique of Ward. Kovalev hits very hard and in the first bout was visibly wobbling Ward off jabs alone. His major weapon is his right hand and it was a counter right that hit Ward flush on the chin in the second and sent him to the canvas. Kovalev’s right hand will always present a danger in this fight if he connects properly with it. Ward will use his ring smart of holding, going to the body, avoiding shots and looking for openings BUT he will get hit with that right hand at some point. You’d have to think in a twelve round fight (if it even goes the distance) he will get hit with it. In the first fight Ward looked in trouble every time Kovalev properly connected so I’ll be backing Ward to get knocked down at 2/1 with William Hill.

There is a genuine dislike between the fighters which was evident at the press conference a few days ago where they could barely even look at each other before Kovalev walked out of it. He went on record to say he felt he let Ward off the hook in the first fight after being in the early ascendancy and is looking to “kick his ass” tonight. I feel he will be much more clinical after watching the first fight back and I don’t think he’ll want to risk it going to the scorecards again. I see Kovalev going for the KO however if it doesn’t come he may have accumulated one or more 10-8 rounds so if it does go to the judges its likely he’ll win. For that reason I’ll be backing Kovalev to win at 23/17 with Marathon Bet

    Good luck all

A bit unlucky last week with the UFC picks, still ended up in profit but a couple of stunning knockouts made a balls of our doubles. Some very interesting boxing bouts on tonight with Paddy Barnes facing his toughest opponent to date and Ward – Kovalev square off in their rematch in the early hours. Let’s hope this week sees us smashing the bookies!

    DOUBLE @ 1.78/1
    Barnes via decision (4/6)
    Rigondeaux via decision (4/6)

    DOUBLE @ 2.54/1
    Kovalev to win
Evans vs Ormond to go the distance

Small play on Kovalev to win between rounds 1-6 @ 15/2 also.

Good write up Bullseye, pretty much exactly what i’m thinking myself. Kovalev cannot let it go to the scorecards again, i don’t think Ward even has the mental edge coming into this one either as he thought he had lost after the bell last time! Kovalev to take him out in the first half of the fight for me, barring that he needs to keep a better pace than last time to guarantee himself at least 7-8 rounds in the bag.

Split day in the Rugby as both doubles fell but the singles were both winners. Maori’s were far too disjointed & I thought the French would be better after a few stars returned but SA were solid & are looking really impressive. UFC brought in some nice profit though as only the longshot fell but the treble flew in as well as the Holly Holm single. Cricket & u20 Rugby still to run but not holding out much hope in the Rugga as the Kiwi kids have looked dominant but you never know.
