Jun 18: Johnb’s Racing Tips & Chat

MRF_RacingTips_Racebets

IT was a cracking day on the racing thread with loads of winners and Ascot hats off to busstop for a fantastic treble.

Johnb wasn’t happy with some of the stewards’ decision and for June he is now 11.92 points down.

Here are his Saturday selections and check out his antepost tips. He’s famous for them.

Must admit that was impressive considering the stable is out of form, the trainer wasn’t too confident because The Tin Man had a bad preparation for this race and finally the horse wasn’t running at 100%
He must have an outstanding chance at Royal Ascot now

In the 2:30 race although there is 15 runners, the only only horse I can see that might be capable of challenging Churchill is the French horse AIMING FOR RIO who is unbelievably available at a massive 16/1
must have a really good eachway shout

    • Profile photo of peter daryll
      peter daryll 6 months ago

      Why so though?
Churchill wasn’t great on debut , not doubting he will be good, but you can’t say Cunco wont be a very good horse he never looked like losing from off the pace and not the clearest of runs

      • Profile photo of Johnb
        Johnb 6 months ago

I can’t say Cunco won’t be a good horse because he will be a good horse, but what I can say is he won’t be a great horse, he won’t be a classic winning horse,
I do the majority of my studying through race recordings, watching reruns over and over again because you learn more from watching horses than you do reading about them,
I look at the build of a horse, I look at how they run, their action and the horse that stood out was Churchill,
There are some nicely bred horses in this race but none are bred as well as Churchill,
Cunco won on debut but his race wasn’t as strong as Churchill’s race which was a strong maiden,
although only coming third on debut there was a lot to like about Churchill who raced keen and to be honest he looked like he was going to be nearer last than first, but at the furlong pole he realised what he was meant to do and that last furlong was impressive,
Connections of Churchill have been saying a lot of good things about him after his Curragh run, including this horse being their second best chance of a winner at Ascot and with Order of St George being their best chance of a winner.

I can’t always be right but whatever happens on Saturday win or lose, Churchill will be Coolmores number one horse for classic glory next year, in my opinion

Top 5 in gold cup 2013/14/15
Back down in class to this race
Negatives is his age, he is 9, jockey bookings suggest he isn’t Mullins 1st choice, and not run for 200+ days.

Top of the morning all, off to a wedding today so I am getting my selections in early.

2.30 ASC CUNCO NB 4/1 SKY BET Money back if second.
This horse won at Newbury last time out ground verging soft. Jockey was struggling to pull him up afterwards, the step up to 7F is spot on he will come on a tonne. HE was very keen early on very buzzy in preliminaries. Unbelievable turn of foot put the race to bed despite greenness.

4.20 ASC Magical Man NAP 7/2 SKY BET.
100% strike rate when riding for owner Kennet Valley Throughbeds I. I quote the Frankie’s words: My best chance over the 5 days could be Magical. Charlie Hills loves this horse so do I. Charlie has great ability with sprinters, and I don’t see a rival in the race that l’d rather be on.

    Happy punting.

    From the Sportinglife

    Irish eyes: vote for Churchill

If you’ve read this column every day this week, prepare for a recurring theme. Royal Ascot has been utterly dominated by Aidan O’Brien. Five winners, three seconds (two of which arguably should have won), and a further four third and fourth-placed finishes means that 16 of his 22 runners have hit the frame this week.
That is a simply phenomenal return from the greatest Flat trainer in the world.

He runs four horses on the final day. Sir Issac Newton runs in the Wolverton and although the form of his Listed third at The Curragh over this trip was boosted when the winner Portage landed the Royal Hunt Cup, he doesn’t look a horse completely in love with the game at present.

Highland Reel runs in the Hardwicke and if he was at the top of his game, he would take all the beating, but you have think that he would have run in better company if he was very well in himself, so that fact the he drops down in grade here itself is a worry.
Again, given the form of the stable, you’d never know what could happen – especially with Seamie Heffernan on board – but ultimately he’s a better horse on better ground (his five wins have been on good, good to firm or firm) so we’ll move on.

The Happy Prince runs in the Wokingham and won a 6f handicap off 93 in similar ground last year so he must have a chance. However he runs of a mark 2lb higher than his Irish mark of 99 here and that 2lb could make all the difference in a competitive race like this.

That brings us back to the first race in which Ballydo is represented by Churchill. While he is admittedly an uninspiring choice, given that all the of fancy prices evaporated early on Friday, he looks the only real chance of an Irish winner on the final day – outside of the concluding Queen Alexandra. More on that later.

Churchill was very green on his first start under Ryan Moore at the Curragh on Irish Guineas weekend and, unfortunately appeared to lack acceleration when the pace quickened up, but the pleasing thing was that he stayed on really well at the death over six furlongs. He was immediately earmarked as the perfect Chesham horse and Aidan is the master when it comes to training horses for certain targets as the victory of Even Song in the Ribblesdale proved.

Some of the form of that race has holes in it but the two horses to take out of it were the winner, Var Der Decken, and Churchill. The winner ran Caravaggio to five lengths when fifth in Tuesday’s Coventry Stakes and that form is plenty good enough to see Churchill make an impact here. Given the restricted conditions of this race – it is confined to the progeny of sires that have won at 10 furlongs or further – it isn’t always the toughest juvenile event at Royal Ascot and therefore, granted normal improvement, Churchill should

      Ryan Moores opinion

      14:30 Ascot – Churchill

It took a while for the penny to drop on his debut over 6f at the Curragh last month but he was certainly getting the hang of things late on, and he shaped really well for me when staying on into third behind Van der Decken. The runner-up has doesn’t much for the form since but the winner finished a good fifth in the Coventry and the fifth, Pedestal, finished third for me in the Windsor Castle on Tuesday, so that opening effort has substance as well as promise.

You would hope and expect that run to have brought him on a lot and that today’s extra furlong should suit; he obviously takes more after his sire than his dam, who finished second in a Queen Mary here. It was soft at the Curragh, so hopefully the ground won’t be a problem, and I think you have to be positive about his chances.

But, of course, by its very nature this race is full of unexposed horses likely to take a big step forward and I’m sure the connections of Frankel colts Cunco and Frankuus will be fancying their chances, and the French filly Aiming For Rio, as well.

58 yo US flat jockey Russell Baze, retired recently on 12842 winners. Vancouver born Baze who first rode in 1974 (when johnb was young) is the winningmost rider in the world. Given that AP Mc Coy and Pat Eddery fell short of 5000, it is an incredible return.

With Churchill’s win that’s 17 O’Brien horses in the first 3 places out of 23 runners

If Seamie Heffernan hadn’t dropped his stick it would have been another winner for O’Brien

I think Dartmouth should lose the race but won’t
come on can you really see the stewards taking a winner away from the Queen at Royal Ascot

    • Profile photo of the notorious
      the notorious 6 months ago

At least there is consistency with stewards in England as opposed to Ireland. I could name countless cockups by irish stewards down through the years, the latest been the Barry Geraghty ban been overturned before Galway races, but this is the result of people been selected for the job, who in reality couldnt spot the difference between a cow and a horse.
Until such time that people are selected for the role of steward on merit as opposed to who they know, Irish racing will continue to screw many a jockey and trainer over and over again.

  46. Profile photo of Johnb
    Johnb 6 months ago

Got to laugh at Olivier Peslier in the stewards room
He got asked if he knew his horse was going right,
He said yes that’s why I changed my whip hand lol

Olivier Peslier read the rules of racing
For anyone that doesn’t know, the whip is only to be used to encourage the horse, it is not to be used to try and straighten a horse,
If you need to straighten a horse you have to put the whip down and use your hands

Anyone that rides horses knows you steer with your hands
