THE PDC World Matchplay Darts gets under way in Blackpool today with Phil Taylor looking to win the event for the 16th time.

The Power hasn’t lost the crown since 2007 – an incredible 35-match winning streak – but he has to play second fiddle in the betting stakes to dazzling Dutchman Michael van Gerwen, the 15-8 favourite at the likes of Paddy Power and Skybet.

Taylor is 10-3 at BetVictor and Ladbrokes while my money will be on Gary Anderson. The Flying Scotsman rises to the big occasion – he beat van Gerwen on his way to lifting both the World Championships and Premier League titles this year – and is decent value at 11-2 with the likes of Betfair, Betfred and Totesport.

Pick of today’s first-round action is Peter Wright versus fellow Premier League player Kim Huybrechts while Jelle Klaasen will fancy his chances against Simon Whitlock.

Van Gerwen begins his title bid against Benito van de Pas and Adrian Lewis hopes to avoid a shock against Joe Murnan.

It’s a crucial day of Davis Cup tennis with Britain and France locked at 1-1 in their quarter-final heading into the doubles rubber and both countries are 10-11 at Skybet to reach the semis.

In the Ashes cricket, England have it all to do as they try to avoid defeat. The Aussies declared on 556-8 and the hosts, who resume on 85-4, are now a massive 40-1 at Paddy Power for victory. It’s likely the best they can hope for is a draw – 5-2 at Titanbet – while the Aussies are 2-5 at StanJames.

Other highlights on a packed Saturday of sport include stage 14 of the Tour de France and international rugby so let’s hear your tips and thoughts and good luck with your bets.

    Scott Quigg v Kiko Martinez

    * Scott Quigg to win by Decision/Technical Decision @ 11/10

Kiko will be the toughest opponent quigg has faced, both fighters are engines and are as good in the later stages as they are in the opening rounds and they should give there all over 12 rounds. Kiko won’t go down easy unlike quiggs other oppents and has only ever been stopped by frampton. Neither are great fighters in my opinion but this will be some fight I expect both fighters to try and stay on the front foot and take control. Quigg is the bigger man and I expect that advantage to get him over the Line with that reach possibly getting him out of any trouble that kiko might bring. This will be a good fight and I think it will be closer than what the bookies have either fighter priced with quigg being best 1/5 most places

    Carl Frampton v Alejandro Gonzales

    * Total Rounds under 7.5 @ 4/5

I have no idea who Alejandro Gonzales is and I’m sure there’s not many who do with makes this bet slightly more risky, was not able to find any footage of him fighting and I have also never heard of any of his oppents who appear to be domestic fighters with nowhere near the ability that carl has. I highly rate Frampton and with this fight being overseas and him wanting to make an impression he should breeze this one. The total rounds is set at 7.5 and for an unheard of fighter to not be knocked out before going into the 9th against Frampton is highly unlikely

Main bet for me today is very similar to yesterday’s as again the price looks way too high. England currently 85-4 with their four steadiest batsmen already gone and I expect hazlewood and lyon to have a good day today

Catalans v Huddersfield super league rugby

Playing in France is never easy teams really stuggle in the wind and high altitude and if you need proof look at how good catalans record is at home compared to away. This season only leeds have beaten catalans in France and teams like my wigan boys and st Helens have taken a hammering there. Last season only the big boys Wigan, Leeds and Warrington were able to win here so fancy catalans to get another home victory

Catalans to win 10/11 at skybet
    Try scorer elliot whitehead 6/4
    Try scorer Louis Anderson 3/1

    Good luck

    Kukushin d Kyrgios @ 4/1

Crunch time in the Davis cup for Australia. Kyrgios fell to Nedovyesov in his first rubber, which was a pretty big shock. During the loss he broke a couple of rackets and was heard saying ‘I don’t want to be here’, hardly an encouraging sign. This comes on the heels of a row with Aussie legend rafter, which itself was just the latest in a string of controversial incidents involving the youngster, who immaturity seems to be slightly hindering his immense talent.

Kukushin is a Davis Cup veteran with a great history in the competition, and has claimed bigger scalps than Kyrgios’ in tougher atmospheres over the years.

Afternoon Guys Catalan Dragons v Huddersfield Giants

A bonus game today comes from the south of France as the Dragons are looking to finally seal a place in the super 8’s. Like all the tv games this weekend the bookies have it a pick em game with the home side a marginal 10/11 Favourites.

Huddersfield could and should have been 18-0 up last week against Saints and blew there chances and ended up going down by a point in a high scoring thriller. They get Brett Ferres back and new signing Daniel Smith is in the squad and could make his debut. Huddersfield have drawn already in France this season 22-22 and they hammered the Dragons at home 38-14.

Catalan are dealing with a lengthy injury list Fouad Yaha, Stan Robin, Willie Tonga, Vincent Duport, Zeb Taia, Thomas Bosc, and Michael Oldfield are just some of the big names missing. A ray of sunshine for Catalan is Todd Carney is named in the squad and is set to return after almost two months out.

The bookies maybe struggling to split these two, but I have a strong fancy for Catalan for two reasons. Firstly the heat and humidity makes it so difficult for opponents, Catalan have won 8 out of 10 at home with one draw. Secondly Todd Carney such a brilliant player and his partnership in the middle with Scott Dureau could prove crucial here. I am taking Catalan on the handicap -2 at 11/10 Stan James.

I think this will be a high scoring game, the Giants have put up 30pts in each of their last four games, whilst at home Catalan have failed to score a minimum 20pts once. Seven times they have scored at least 30pts and I take them to cover their try line set at 4.5. It is 5/6 Skybet.

In the try scorer market I don’t mind who scores for Catalan as I am on team tries, but I cant ignore the price on Eloi Pelissier. The hooker as scored 9 tries this season and 3 in his last 4. I can see him going over close to the line when the big giants pack start to tire in the heat. He looks big at 11/4 Ladbrokes.

Pelissier anytime wincast is 9/2 Skybet if you want to put all your eggs in one basket.

Good luck if your having a bet
